The effect of intranasal oxytocin on the perception of affective touch and multisensory integration in anorexia nervosa: protocol for a double-blind placebo-controlled crossover study.

INTRODUCTION: Anorexia nervosa (AN) is an eating disorder characterised by restriction of energy intake, fears of gaining weight and related body image disturbances. The oxytocinergic system has been proposed as a pathophysiological candidate for AN. Oxytocin is a neuropeptide involved in bodily processes (eg, breast feeding) and in the onset of social behaviours (eg, bonding). Studies investigating the effect of intranasal oxytocin (IN-OT) in AN showed that it can improve attentional bias for high-calorie food and fat bodies stimuli, and related stress. However, less is known about the effect

Vertical object motion during horizontal ocular pursuit: compensation for eye movements increases with presentation duration.

Smooth pursuit eye movements change the retinal image motion of objects in the visual field. To enable an observer to perceive the motion of these objects veridically, the visual system has to compensate for the effects of the eye movements. The occurrence of the Filehne-illusion (illusory motion of a stationary object during smooth pursuit) shows that this compensation is not always perfect. The amplitude of the illusion appears to decrease with increasing presentation durations of the stationary object. In this study we investigated whether presentation duration has the same effect when an o

Illusory light drives pupil responses in primates.

In humans, the eye pupils respond to both physical light sensed by the retina and mental representations of light produced by the brain. Notably, our pupils constrict when a visual stimulus is illusorily perceived brighter, even if retinal illumination is constant. However, it remains unclear whether such perceptual penetrability of pupil responses is an epiphenomenon unique to humans or whether it represents an adaptive mechanism shared with other animals to anticipate variations in retinal illumination between successive eye fixations. To address this issue, we measured the pupil responses o

Pulfrich revisited.

The Pulfrich phenomenon is a stereo-illusion resulting from latency disparities in the visual pathways. It is common after optic neuritis, but is also to be found with other conditions. The symptoms are often difficult for the patient to explain and for the physician to understand. Symptoms may be sufficiently disturbing to significantly interfere with a patient's life (e.g., prevention of driving). Treatment with the use of monocular tints is simple and effective.

Research progress of postoperative delirium in neurosurgery.

Delirium is a transient and acute syndrome of encephalopathy, characterized by disturbances in consciousness, orientation, cognition, perception, and emotional regulation, often accompanied by hallucinations, illusions, psychomotor agitation, and restlessness. Postoperative delirium (POD), a common complication particularly in elderly patients, significantly impacts recovery by prolonging mechanical ventilation, neurosurgical intensive care unit stays, and overall hospitalization durations, while severely diminishing patients' quality of life after discharge. Despite its prevalence, POD remain…

[Altered states of consciousness induced by N,N-dimethyltryptamine (DMT)].

In a controlled study on 38 volunteers the effects of 250 mcg/kg N,N-Dimethyltryptamine (DMT) i.m. were assessed. 26 subjects received DMT and 12 placebo. The altered states of consciousness and the somatic changes were measured by several questionnaires administered after the experiment. In spite of the low dose as compared to previous studies significant differences to placebo were found in the following syndromes of altered states of consciousness: visual hallucinations rep. illusions, impairment of memory and attention, changes of body image, depersonalization syndrome, derealization syndr…

The monologue of the double: Allocentric reduplication of the own voice alters bodily self-perception.

During autoscopic phenomena, people perceive a double of themselves in extrapersonal space. Such clinical allocentric self-experiences sometimes co-occur with auditory hallucinations, yet experimental setups to induce similar illusions in healthy participants have generally neglected acoustic cues. We investigated whether feeling the presence of an auditory double could be provoked experimentally by recording healthy participants' own versus another person's voice and movements using binaural headphones from an egocentric (the participants' own) and an allocentric (a dummy head located elsewhe…

Pain modulation by illusory body rotation: A new way to disclose the interaction between the vestibular system and pain processing.

BACKGROUND: Clinical and experimental evidence advocates a structural and functional link between the vestibular and other sensory systems. For instance, visuo-vestibular and vestibular-somatosensory interactions have been widely reported. However, whether visual inputs carrying vestibular information can modulate pain is not yet clear. Recent evidence using natural vestibular stimulation or moving visual stimuli, points at an unspecific effect of distraction. METHODS: By using immersive virtual reality (VR), we created a new way to prompt the vestibular system through the vision of static vi

Fear-relevant illusory correlations: what types of associations promote judgmental bias?

A. J. Tomarken, S. Mineka, and M. Cook (1989) found that high-fear individuals markedly overestimated the covariation between fear-relevant stimuli and aversive outcomes. The authors assessed what features of stimulus-outcome associations promote illusory correlations. In Experiment 1, participants with high snake fear exhibited significant covariation bias for slides of snakes and shocks, but not for slides of damaged electric outlets (DEOs) and shocks. In Experiment 2, individuals with high and low snake fear rated DEOs and shocks as belonging together better than snakes and shocks. However,

The effects of periodic and noisy tendon vibration on a kinesthetic targeting task.

Tendon vibration is used extensively to assess the role of peripheral mechanoreceptors in motor control, specifically, the muscle spindles. Periodic tendon vibration is known to activate muscle spindles and induce a kinesthetic illusion that the vibrated muscle is longer than it actually is. Noisy tendon vibration has been used to assess the frequency characteristics of proprioceptive reflex pathways during standing; however, it is unknown if it induces the same kinesthetic illusions as periodic vibration. The purpose of the current study was to assess the effects of both periodic and noisy te…

Contact lenses, the reverse Pulfrich effect, and anti-Pulfrich monovision corrections.

Interocular differences in image blur can cause processing speed differences that lead to dramatic misperceptions of the distance and three-dimensional direction of moving objects. This recently discovered illusion-the reverse Pulfrich effect-is caused by optical conditions induced by monovision, a common correction for presbyopia. Fortunately, anti-Pulfrich monovision corrections, which darken the blurring lens, can eliminate the illusion for many viewing conditions. However, the reverse Pulfrich effect and the efficacy of anti-Pulfrich corrections have been demonstrated only with trial lense

Football gambling three arm-controlled study: gamblers, amateurs and laypersons.

BACKGROUND: Football (soccer) betting, as a strategic form of betting, became one of the favorite wagers for pathological gamblers. Previous studies demonstrated the psychological and biological significance of the 'illusion of control' (personal control) and 'near miss' results in gambling. In our study, we explored whether knowledge and expertise of pathological sports gamblers can ensure a successful bet. SAMPLE AND METHODS: Participants were divided into three groups of individuals - pathological gamblers, amateurs and laypersons - and were asked to predict in advance the general result a

Measurement of oscillopsia induced by vestibular Coriolis stimulation.

We demonstrate a new method for measuring the time constant of head-movement-contingent oscillopsia (HMCO) produced by vestibular Coriolis stimulation. Subjects briskly rotated their heads around pitch or roll axes whilst seated on a platform rotating at constant velocity. This induced a cross-coupled vestibular Coriolis illusion. Simultaneous with the head movement, a visual display consisting of either a moving field of white dots on a black background or superimposed on a subject-stationary horizon, or a complete virtual room with conventional furnishings appeared. The scene's motion was dr

The self, its body and its brain.

The body is intrinsic to our sense of self and as such, any theoretical account of the self should also include contributions of the body. This Collection incorporates a series of papers that demonstrate the inextricable relationship between body and self. The papers include studies of body illusions and studies of observed differences in bodily experience in participants with psychiatric and physical conditions. Papers in the Collection also address methodological issues, because measuring and manipulating the bodily self does not come without challenges; subjective experiences are difficult …

Alice in Wonderland syndrome as an initial manifestation of Epstein-Barr virus infection.

We present a patient with serologically confirmed Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection who had illusions of size, shape, and colour of objects but none of the typical symptoms and signs peculiar to infectious mononucleosis (IM) except sore throat which developed 2 weeks after the initial visual disturbances. The bizarre feelings about the images of body and objects are called the 'Alice in Wonderland syndrome' due to the similarity with Alice's dreams. The same symptomatology including visual metamorphosia is defined in patients with migraine, epilepsy, intoxication due to hallucinogenic drugs, …

Symptoms of schizotypal personality disorder.

The authors examined the symptoms of 35 patients with schizotypal personality disorder. In contrast to the suggestion, based on studies of nonclinical, familial samples, that patients with schizotypal disorder are best characterized by the negative symptoms of social isolation and impaired functioning, they found that the positive symptoms of odd communication, ideas of reference, magical thinking, and illusions were equally valid discriminators of their clinically based group of patients. The findings argue against the idea that schizotypal personality disorder be redefined in the revision of…

Dynamics of unconscious contextual effects in orientation processing.

Contextual effects abound in the real world; how we perceive an object depends on what surrounds it. A classic example of this is the tilt illusion (TI) whereby the presence of a surround shifts the perceived orientation of a target. Surprisingly, the magnitude and direction of this shift depend on the orientation difference between the target and surround: when their orientations are similar, the perceived difference is amplified and the target appears repelled in orientation from the surround (i.e., the TI). However, when their orientations are close to perpendicular, the difference is decre
