Systematic dissemination of study findings from local to national stakeholders: a case of a social network-based study on HIV self-testing and linkage among fishermen in Kenya.

Disseminating research findings to potential beneficiaries such as study participants, community members, and stakeholders is a critical component of participatory research. While there is general agreement that dissemination is critical, documented examples of comprehensive dissemination activities are few in the literature. We present a concrete example of a multi-level stakeholder dissemination process from a successful HIV self-testing and linkage to treatment and prevention intervention, describe the dissemination framework used to guide activities, document the process required to carry

Social media crisis communication and public engagement during COVID-19 analyzing public health and news media organizations' tweeting strategies.

This study investigates early COVID-19 communication strategies and content of four public health and four news media organizations across Australia, China, the UK, and the US on X (formerly Twitter) and their public engagement. 15,711 COVID-19-related tweets from the selected accounts posted from January 1 to May 19, 2020, were collected using a web crawler. Public engagement was measured through replies, retweets, and likes. The tweets were grouped into 37 clusters using unsupervised learning and analyzed thematically based on the top 30 tweets per cluster. Descriptive statistics quantified

A protocol for developing, disseminating, and implementing a core outcome set for caesarean scar ectopic pregnancy research: COSCAR.

BACKGROUND: Caesarean scar ectopic pregnancy (CSEP) is the most common of type of uterine ectopic pregnancy and is associated with significant morbidity. Prompt diagnosis and treatment is therefore of paramount importance. Currently there is no universally agreed treatment option for CSEP supported by any national or international society. Studies evaluating CSEP management report many different outcomes and often define and measure success or complications of various treatments in different ways. This variation in reporting of outcomes leads to heterogeneity and an inability to directly, or r

YouTube as a source of patient information for stroke: A content-quality and an audience engagement analysis.

BACKGROUND: Stroke is the second leading cause of death worldwide following ischemic heart disease, and the fifth in the United States. The video-sharing database, YouTube, is the second most popular visited website with more than 2 billion users, thus it's increasingly being used as a medium for delivering health information. AIM: We aimed to evaluate the quality, reliability and audience engagement of stroke-related YouTube videos. METHODS: In October 2019 we conducted a search on YouTube using 5 keywords: stroke, brain attack, hemorrhagic stroke, ischemic stroke and transient ischemic att

Migration and its influence on the knowledge and usage of birth control methods among Afghan women who stay behind.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this article is to investigate the link between migration and knowledge and use of birth control methods among female household members (of migrants) who stay behind in Afghanistan. Migrants can remit birth control information received in the destination country to non-migrants staying in the origin country, who may as a consequence adjust their health behaviour accordingly. The consequences of this interaction for knowledge and use are what we aim to test. STUDY DESIGN: Population-based secondary analysis of cross-sectional data. METHODS: This study used cross-se

'By failing to prepare you are preparing to fail': lessons from the 2009 H1N1 'swine flu' pandemic.

BACKGROUND: Pandemic influenza has the potential to cause widespread death and destruction. Communications with the public have a vital role in the prevention of pandemic influenza by promoting the effective uptake of behaviours that can delay the spread of infection. This study explored the development and implementation of communications in the pandemic influenza outbreak of H1N1 ('swine flu') in 2009 in three European countries. METHODS: In-depth interviews were conducted with senior policy and communication officials involved in the planning and delivery of communications programmes in En

Mitochondrial Disease Sequence Data Resource (MSeqDR): a global grass-roots consortium to facilitate deposition, curation, annotation, and integrated analysis of genomic data for the mitochondrial disease clinical and research communities.

Success rates for genomic analyses of highly heterogeneous disorders can be greatly improved if a large cohort of patient data is assembled to enhance collective capabilities for accurate sequence variant annotation, analysis, and interpretation. Indeed, molecular diagnostics requires the establishment of robust data resources to enable data sharing that informs accurate understanding of genes, variants, and phenotypes. The "Mitochondrial Disease Sequence Data Resource (MSeqDR) Consortium" is a grass-roots effort facilitated by the United Mitochondrial Disease Foundation to identify and priori

Creating a process for incorporating epidemiological modelling into outbreak management decisions.

Modern computational models of infectious diseases greatly enhance our ability to understand new infectious threats and assess the effects of different interventions. The recently-released CDC Framework for Preventing Infectious Diseases calls for increased use of predictive modelling of epidemic emergence for public health preparedness. Currently, the utility of these technologies in preparedness and response to outbreaks is limited by gaps between modelling output and information requirements for incident management. The authors propose an operational structure that will facilitate integrati

The people's role in U.S. national health security: past, present, and future.

Over the past decade, assumptions have been made and unmade about what officials can expect of average people confronting a bioterrorist attack or other major health incident. The reframing of the public in national discourse and doctrine from a panic-stricken mob to a band of hearty survivors is a positive development and more realistic in terms of the empirical record. So, too, is the realization that citizen contributions to national health security encompass not only individual preparedness and volunteerism but also mutual aid and collective deliberation of the tough choices posed by healt

The interplay of public intervention and private choices in determining the outcome of vaccination programmes.

After a long period of stagnation, traditionally explained by the voluntary nature of the programme, a considerable increase in routine measles vaccine uptake has been recently observed in Italy after a set of public interventions aiming to promote MMR immunization, whilst retaining its voluntary aspect. To account for this take-off in coverage we propose a simple SIR transmission model with vaccination choice, where, unlike similar works, vaccinating behaviour spreads not only through the diffusion of "private" information spontaneously circulating among parents of children to be vaccinated,

Integrating technology into palliative care research.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: As palliative care research evolves and grows within resource-strained environments, further integration of novel methods to assist in completing protocols is needed. Technology-assisted techniques, including the use of software and hardware, to aid in data collection, analysis and reporting are increasingly being incorporated into research investigations in palliative care. Reviewing reported successes of technology use in palliative care research is important to communicate lessons learned and principles to guide further implementation. RECENT FINDINGS: There is a growing

Beyond dose assessment: using risk with full disclosure of uncertainty in public and scientific communication.

Evaluations of radiation exposures of workers and the public traditionally focus on assessments of radiation dose, especially annual dose, without explicitly evaluating the health risk associated with those exposures, principally the risk of radiation-induced cancer. When dose is the endpoint of an assessment, opportunities to communicate the significance of exposures are limited to comparisons with dose criteria in regulations, doses due to natural background or medical x-rays, and doses above which a statistically significant increase of disease has been observed in epidemiologic studies. Clinical skin banking: II. Stimulating sources for organ donation.

Donor source stimulation for a regional skin bank is discussed, emphasizing the importance of coordination with other organ donor programs, centralization of a public information and donor identifying communication system, exploitation of regional legislative precedents which facilitate organ donation, and finally, identification of health professional and related groups with a common interest in matters associated with rational planning for the time of death. The specific problem associated with skin donation, namely, a sensitive description of the technical details of skin harvest, is also c

Dissemination of trial results to study participants in Cambodia, Ethiopia and Pakistan: a qualitative study.

OBJECTIVES: Dissemination of study results to research participants is an ethical imperative, yet it is rarely implemented in resource-limited settings partly due to a lack of clear guidance. The purpose of this study was to evaluate and explore dissemination activities that were conducted as part of a multi-site clinical trial of Plasmodium vivax treatment options, informing future dissemination strategies in similar resource-limited settings. DESIGN: Qualitative study using focus group discussions (FGDs) and an inductive-deductive thematic analysis approach. SETTING: Clinical trial study s
