Tools for evaluation and prediction of industrial noise sources. Application to a wastewater treatment plant.

In recent years, acoustic pollution caused by noise has considerably increased in many countries. Particularly in Spain, the noisiest country in Europe. It is sometimes difficult to predict the noise levels that a new installation or an expansion of industrial equipment will cause in the surroundings. This work introduces a new methodology for the prediction, evaluation, and analysis of industrial noise sources, as well as a novel tool for predicting and categorizing outdoor noise from its measurement at their sources. A Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) has been used to demonstrate the applic

Vaccination information, motivations, and barriers in the context of meningococcal serogroup A conjugate vaccine introduction: A qualitative assessment among caregivers in Burkina Faso, 2018.

BACKGROUND: In March 2017, Burkina Faso introduced meningococcal serogroup A conjugate vaccine (MACV) into the Expanded Programme on Immunization. MACV is administered to children aged 15-18 months, concomitantly with the second dose of measles-containing vaccine (MCV2). One year after MACV introduction, we assessed the sources and content of immunization information available to caregivers and explored motivations and barriers that influence their decision to seek MACV for their children. METHODS: Twenty-four focus group discussions (FGDs) were conducted with caregivers of children eligible

Record linkage in Scotland and its applications to health research.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: This paper will focus on the key concepts behind record linkage and describe how probability matching of Scottish health records can be used for national health research. BACKGROUND: Record linkage can bring together two or more records relating to the same individual. This allows information from multiple sources to be joined together to produce richer data sets for research purposes and has wide applicability in public health and epidemiological research. The probability matching techniques underpinning record linkage bring together records on a patient basis using key

How College Students Used Information From Institutions of Higher Education in the United States During COVID-19: Web-Based Cross-Sectional Survey Study.

BACKGROUND: The start of the COVID-19 pandemic resulted in the implementation of nonpharmaceutical interventions by US institutions of higher education at an unprecedented level. During the backdrop of an emerging pandemic, younger adults (eg, college students) had an overall lower risk for severe outcomes for SARS-CoV-2, making this population a potential source of transmission for age groups with high susceptibility and negative health outcomes. We examine how college students' level of concern for COVID-19 was influenced by different sources of information, their living status, income level

Alcohol Production, Prevention Strategies, and Inmate Knowledge About the Risk for Botulism From Pruno Consumption in a Correctional Facility--Arizona, 2013.

During July to November 2012, two botulism outbreaks (12 cases total) occurred in one all-male prison; both were associated with illicitly brewed alcohol (pruno) consumption. Inmate surveys were conducted to evaluate and develop prevention and education strategies. Qualitative surveys with open-ended questions were performed among inmates from rooms where outbreaks occurred to learn about pruno consumption. Quantitative surveys assessed knowledge gained after the outbreaks and preferred information sources. For the quantitative surveys, 250 inmates were randomly selected by bed from across the…

Nurses' perspectives on problems of hospitalized PCP patients: implications for the development of a nursing taxonomy.

The phenomena of interest in nursing informatics research are the data, information and knowledge related to nursing. This study presents nurses' perspectives on the problems of patients hospitalized for Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia from four data sources: nurse interview, intershift report, care plan, and nurses' notes. Even within this narrowly specified sample, patient problems showed variation across sources of data. The results of this study demonstrate the difficulties inherent in developing a nursing taxonomy when there is not consensus about the relevant data for nursing within a spe

A new framing approach in guideline development to manage different sources of knowledge.

RATIONALE: Contemporary guideline methodology struggles to consider context and information from different sources of knowledge besides quantitative research. Return to work programmes involve multiple components and stakeholders. If the guideline is to be relevant and practical for a complex intervention such as return to work, it is essential to use broad sources of knowledge. AIMS AND OBJECTIVE: This paper reports on a new method in guideline development to manage different sources of knowledge. METHODS: The method used framing for the return-to-work guidance within the Clinical Practice

Organochlorine pesticides in ambient air in Durban, South Africa.

Despite the existence of numerous sources and continuing use, information regarding emissions and airborne concentrations of organochlorine pesticides in Africa is extremely limited. This paper presents results of a monitoring program conducted in Durban, South Africa that was designed to characterize levels, trends and possible sources of pesticides in both industrial and residential areas. Three monitoring sites were established, two in an industrialized area in the southern part of the city, and the third in a northern residential area. Particulate and vapor samples were sampled over the 20

Risk stratification of non-contrast CT beyond the coronary calcium scan.

Coronary artery calcification (CAC) is a well-known marker for coronary artery disease and has important prognostic implications. CAC is able to provide clinicians with a reliable source of information related to cardiovascular atherosclerosis, which carries incremental information beyond Framingham risk. However, non-contrast scans of the heart provide additional information beyond the Agatston score. These studies are also able to measure various sources of fat, including intrathoracic (eg, pericardial or epicardial) and hepatic, both of which are thought to be metabolically active and linke

Exploring fertility treatment add-on use, information transparency and costs in the UK: Insights from a patient survey.

This study presents the findings from a UK-based survey exploring fertility treatment add-ons, treatment costs, and information transparency. The online survey, distributed via social media, targeted current and prospective IVF patients, yielding 304 eligible responses. Results indicate an increase in the use of fertility treatment add-ons compared to previous data. Respondents primarily relied on multiple sources for information about these add-ons, with search engines being the most frequently used, followed by fertility clinic websites, the HFEA website, and medical or scientific articles.

Using Immunization Data Systems to Track Zero-Dose Children in Bangladesh: Mixed Methods Exploratory Study.

BACKGROUND: Zero-dose (ZD) children-those who receive no routine vaccines-remain highly vulnerable, with global evidence showing that they are concentrated in marginalized and hard-to-reach settings. In Bangladesh, stagnant full-immunization coverage, population mobility, and inconsistencies in administrative data complicate accurate estimation of ZD and underimmunized children. Gaps in the completeness, timeliness, and accuracy of routine Expanded Programme on Immunization (EPI) information systems further limit the ability to identify and target these populations. OBJECTIVE: This study aime
