Several risk factors have been identified that appear to be consistently and strongly associated with the development of atopic dermatitis (AD): a family history of atopy, an inherited genetic predisposition, and active and passive exposure to tobacco smoke. Recent studies also have demonstrated that a simple intervention from birth-the daily application of an emollient moisturizer-seems to protect susceptible infants from the development of AD.

The skin constitutes the interface between the organism and the environment, and it protects the body from harmful substances in the environment via physical, chemical and immunological barriers. The immunological barrier of the skin comprises both cells from the innate and the adaptive immune system. During the last years, it has become clear that innate lymphoid cells play a role in homeostasis and inflammation of the skin in humans and mice. In this review, we will discuss the role of innate lymphoid cells in healthy and inflamed skin with special focus on their role in atopic dermatitis.

Our objective here was to perform a quantitative phosphoproteomic study on a reconstituted human skin tissue to identify low- and high-dose ionizing radiation-dependent signalling in a complex three-dimensional setting. BACKGROUND AND IMPORTANCE: Encephalocraniocutaneous lipomatosis (ECCL) is a rare neurocutaneous syndrome presumably derived from a mesenchymal defect. No cases of ECCL associated with a neuroepithelial brain tumor have been described. Papillary glioneuronal tumor (PGNT) is also a rare brain tumor of mixed neuronal and glial cells. We believe this is the first case of ECCL combined with a PGNT to be described. The presence of the PGNT may reflect the maldevelopment of neuroepithelium in this ECCL patient and suggests a novel explanation of the pathogenesis of ECCL.

Fourteen juvenile patients with small cell gliomas were studied at two institutes. These tumors are believed to form a distinct entity. They arise mostly in the diencephalon or the brain stem and are composed of a poorly differentiated small cell component having a pronounced tendency to differentiate into a glioma. Ten cases of choroid plexus tumors (3 papillomas and 7 carcinomas) were tested for the presence of glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) and cytokeratin. None of the papillomas and one of the carcinomas were positive with GFAP antisera. Cytokeratin-positive cells were present in 2 of 7 carcinomas and in all papillomas. There seems to be a positive correlation between the degree of the tumor differentiation and the expression of intermediate filaments.
