Psychological Distress and Revictimization Risk in Youth Victims of Sexual Abuse.

Psychological distress, including depression and anxiety, has been associated with increased risk for sexual revictimization in youth who have experienced child sexual abuse. The present study utilized assessment information from treatment seeking youth with histories of sexual abuse to explore specific risk indicators for revictimization-risk taking, social problems, maladaptive cognitions, and posttraumatic stress-that may be indicated by self-reported distress. The relationship between initial levels of distress and change in symptoms over a 12-week course of treatment was also explored. Pa

PATH-G: a proposed integrative motivational-cognitive-behavioral protocol for gambling disorder. A theoretically grounded 12-week workbook-based model with maintenance and relapse components.

Gambling Disorder (GD) is a multifactorial behavioral addiction characterized by persistent gambling despite significant harm, and typically involves cognitive distortions, urge dysregulation, shame, interpersonal strain, avoidant coping, and progressive erosion of self-trust. The present manuscript introduces PATH-G (Progressive Adaptive Treatment Hierarchy for Gambling Disorder), a proposed, theoretically grounded and not yet empirically evaluated, therapist-guided, workbook-assisted, 12-week psychotherapy protocol for adults with GD, followed by a structured maintenance phase and a dedicate

Unravelling inter-relations within and between psychodynamic constructs and psychopathology using network analysis.

Psychodynamic constructs and psychopathology are closely inter-related, but more detailed insight is needed. We investigated these complex inter-relations using network analysis. A Gaussian graphical model in a sample of N = 2232 psychotherapeutic inpatients was estimated. Self-administered questionnaires to assess interpersonal relations (Inventory of Interpersonal Problems-32), psychodynamic conflicts (Operationalized Psychodynamic Diagnosis-Conflict Questionnaire), personality functioning (Operationalized Psychodynamic Diagnosis-Structure Questionnaire-Short Form, Inventory of Personality O

Partner symptom accommodation in generalized anxiety disorder: a preliminary examination of correlates with symptoms and cognitive behavioural therapy outcome.

BACKGROUND: Symptom accommodation is suggested to maintain anxiety pathology and interfere with treatment effectiveness for anxiety and related disorders. However, little is known about symptom accommodation in generalized anxiety disorder (GAD). AIM: This study investigated the associations between romantic partner symptom accommodation, GAD symptoms, intolerance of uncertainty (IU), relationship satisfaction, and cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) outcomes from the perspective of the person with GAD. METHOD: One hundred and twelve people with GAD participated in group CBT and completed me

An innate brainstem self-other system involving orienting, affective responding, and polyvalent relational seeking: Some clinical implications for a "Deep Brain Reorienting" trauma psychotherapy approach.

Underlying any complex relational intersubjectivity there is an inherent urge to connect, to have proximity, to engage in an experience of interpersonal contact. The hypothesis set out here is that this most basic urge to connect is dependent on circuits based in three main components: the midbrain superior colliculi (SC), the midbrain periaqueductal gray (PAG), and the mesolimbic and mesocortical dopamine systems originating in the midbrain ventral tegmental area. Firstly, there is orienting towards or away from interpersonal contact, dependent on approach and/or defensive/withdrawal areas of

Changes in post-event processing during cognitive behavioural therapy for social anxiety disorder: A longitudinal analysis using post-session measurement and experience sampling methodology.

PURPOSE: Post-event processing (PEP) is posited to be an important factor in the maintenance of social anxiety symptoms. Previous research has demonstrated that general PEP tendencies are sensitive to treatment. However, it remains unclear how momentary PEP following social interactions changes over the course of treatment for social anxiety disorder. The purpose of the present study was to examine how both momentary and general PEP change over the course of treatment, and how such changes predict treatment outcome. METHOD: Participants (N = 60) with social anxiety disorder were enrolled in g

Narrative Approaches to North American Indigenous People Who Attempt Suicide.

INTRODUCTION: Suicide is a major problem within North America's indigenous communities. There is debate about the best way to approach indigenous people who have attempted suicide. Conventional methods of cognitive behavior therapy have been criticized for not being indigenous friendly. METHODS: Case files from an academically affiliated, rural psychiatric practice focused primarily on indigenous patients were reviewed for 54 indigenous patients who attempted suicide. Grounded theory methods were used to identify common strategies for approaching those patients who were able to stop attemptin

STARS experiential group intervention: a complex trauma treatment approach for survivors of human trafficking.

This is the abstract that was submitted online with the paper: Despite the fact that many survivors of human trafficking have experienced complex trauma, there are no established interventions designed to specifically address these impacts. Leaders in the field of complex trauma have advocated for the need for somatic approaches to intervention. This paper presents STARS Experiential Group treatment, the first structured bodybased group intervention that has been designed to address complex trauma in survivors of human trafficking. Three pilot groups were run in residential settings with adole

[Diagnosis and Therapeutic Interventions in Autism Spectrum Disorders in Adulthood].

Autism spectrum disorders (ASD) are characterized by disturbed social interaction and communication as well as stereotyped or repetitive behaviors and interests. Although adults with ASD often acquire complex compensatory strategies that help them master social situations in a rule-based fashion, they still show impairments in intuitive processing of social signals and especially nonverbal communication in complex everyday situations. This constitutes a particular challenge for the psychotherapy of ASD. Psychotherapists are required to explicitly inform and act as an agent of the non-autistic

Use and feasibility of telemedicine technology in the dissemination of Parent-Child Interaction Therapy.

This brief report discusses the use and feasibility of telemedicine technology in the dissemination of Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT). PCIT is an empirically supported behavioral parent training program for reducing disruptive behavior in young children and for reducing future rates of child physical abuse. The positive impact PCIT has demonstrated in reducing child maltreatment has galvanized interest in widespread dissemination of the PCIT model into child service systems. PCIT has traditionally been taught in university-based training programs in a mentored cotherapy model. By cont

Interaction regulations used by schizophrenic and psychosomatic patients: studies on facial behavior in dyadic interactions.

This paper is part of an extensive research project that is trying to examine transference and countertransference processes objectively. We have used a methodology that describes and analyzes interactive behavior patterns observed between different groups of patients with psychic disturbances and their interaction partners, who are uninformed about their problems. Thus far, we have completed several studies centered around the question of whether it is possible to identify specific interaction strategies in groups of patients of different nosological categories. Related to this question was t

Efficacy of treatment for geropsychiatric patients with severe mental illness.

This review provides a comprehensive overview of currently available treatments for psychogeriatric disorders, summarizing the efficacy of various treatment approaches based on research evidence. The severe mental illnesses in geriatric age-groups can be classified into the following groups: delirium, dementia, depression, mania, psychotic disorders, and anxiety disorders. There are specific disorders requiring specific treatments within each group. Effective treatments exist for most disorders. Effective treatment for delirium consists of identifying and treating an underlying cause, and the

Treatment of borderline patients: a pragmatic approach.

Outlined in the preceding sections are what one could call the ABCDs of treating borderline patients. A = analytically informed psychotherapy; B = behavior therapy; C = cognitive therapy; and D = drug therapy. Together they add up to "E": eclectic therapy. In this pragmatic approach, the therapist will assess at the outset (1) amenability to exploratory therapy, but also (2) the need for supportive measures, including education, rehabilitation, and expansion of outside interests, (3) indications for behavioral technics (socially alienating habits, handwashing compulsions, phobias), (4) indicat

Psychosocial interventions for adult survivors and responders exposed to mass casualty events: A systematic review and network meta-analysis.

This systematic review and network meta-analysis evaluated and ranked psychosocial interventions for reducing posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, and anxiety among adults exposed to mass casualty events (MCEs). English- and Spanish-language databases were searched for randomized and nonrandomized trials comparing interventions with inactive (e.g., waitlist) or active (e.g., treatment-as-usual) controls. Primary outcomes were posttreatment symptoms of PTSD, depression, and anxiety. Risk of bias was assessed (Cochrane Risk of Bias 2, ROBINS-I), and random-effects network meta-analy

An Action-Based Psychosocial Group Intervention in Psychiatric Inpatient Care: A Pragmatic Add-On Study to Talk-Based Psychotherapy.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Psychiatric inpatient care emphasizes pharmacological stabilization, yet psychosocial interventions remain essential for addressing complex emotional, interpersonal, and behavioral needs. While talk-based psychotherapy (TBP) is standard inpatient psychosocial care, some patients face barriers to exclusively verbal engagement during acute crises. This study examined the feasibility and implementation of psychodrama as a pragmatic add-on to routine inpatient TBP under real-world ward conditions. METHODS: A quasi-experimental pragmatic add-on design was used (N = 84). All

Reciprocal Dynamics of Therapeutic Alliance and Depressive Symptoms in Inpatient Cognitive Behavioural Analysis System of Psychotherapy: The Role of Attachment Insecurity.

BACKGROUND: Persistent depressive disorder (PDD) is marked by interpersonal dysfunction, presenting significant challenges for effective treatment. The Cognitive Behavioural Analysis System of Psychotherapy (CBASP) is specifically designed for PDD, offering a structured framework to foster a meaningful therapeutic relationship. However, its effectiveness in patients with attachment insecurities-commonly observed in PDD-remains unclear. This study examined the bidirectional relationship between the therapeutic working alliance and depressive symptoms, alongside the moderating role of attachment

Psychedelics and collective trauma: multisystemic resilience and recovery pathways among Nova festival survivors - a qualitative study.

Objective: On 7 October 2023, a mass-casualty attack at the Nova festival in Israel created an unprecedented convergence of collective trauma and altered states of consciousness. Many survivors were under the influence of psychedelics or other psychoactive substances at the time of the attack. This study explored how survivors made sense of and navigated recovery, with a focus on relational, community, and cultural processes.Method: We conducted semi-structured interviews with 45 Israeli survivors (25 male, 20 female), recruited through a nonprofit organization that provides trauma support. Associations between trauma exposure and irritability within the family unit: a network approach.

BACKGROUND: Pediatric irritability is a pervasive psychiatric symptom, yet its etiology remains elusive. While trauma exposure may contribute to the development of irritability, empirical research is limited. This study examined the prevalence of irritability among trauma-exposed children, identified factors that differentiate trauma-exposed children with and without irritability, and employed a network analysis to uncover associations between irritability and trauma exposure in the family unit. METHODS: Sample included 676 children (56.3% male, mean age = 9.67 ± 3.7 years) and their parents
