Extension of the rejection sensitivity construct to the interpersonal functioning of gay men.

On the basis of recent evidence suggesting that gay men are particularly likely to fear interpersonal rejection, the authors set out to extend the rejection sensitivity construct to the mental health concerns of gay men. After establishing a reliable and valid measure of the gay-related rejection sensitivity construct, the authors use this to test the mediating effect of internalized homophobia on the relationship between parental rejection of one's sexual orientation and sensitivity to future gay-related rejection. The present data support this mediational model and also establish rejection s

The impact of self-esteem and interpersonal relationships on the processing of verbal violence: Evidence from ERPs.

The perception of verbal violence is a critical component in the chain of its negative impacts. This study utilized event-related potentials (ERPs) to explore the impact of self-esteem and interpersonal relationships on the processing of verbal violence. Seventy-three participants completed the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale and a verbal violence ERP task. Stimuli depicting verbal violence were presented as violent words within a fixed sentence structure. The interpersonal relationships, represented by the positions of the subjects in the sentences, suggested different sources of verbal violence,…

Metacognitive Interpersonal Therapy for Misophonia: A Single-Case Study.

BACKGROUND: Misophonia is a chronic condition in which the exposure to specific sounds increases the arousal and recurrence of specific intense negative emotions. We hypothesized that misophonia may be strongly related to maladaptive interpersonal schemas that create difficulties in interpersonal relationships. Subjects with maladaptive interpersonal schemas think that other people try to subjugate, criticize, dominate, exploit, deceive, disregard, and humiliate them. Furthermore, these patients typically endorse a representation of self as mistreated, constricted, harmed, damaged, humiliated,…

How therapists' interpersonal behaviour is perceived by their patients and close others: A longitudinal and cross-situational study.

Due to their predictive abilities, therapist interpersonal behaviour is of great relevance for psychotherapy. However, there is a lack of knowledge about its stability inside but also outside of the therapy room within and between therapists. The current study investigates interpersonal behaviour of trainee therapists (N = 20) as perceived by four patients each suffering from generalized anxiety disorder and three closely related persons of every therapist (close others). Investigating repeated measures, four patients per therapist completed the Impact Message Inventory (IMI; Kiesler, 1987) th

Effects of interpersonal relationships and forgiveness on post-traumatic growth in hemodialysis patients: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Post-traumatic growth is regarded as a screening indicator for quality of life of hemodialysis patients. Interpersonal relationships and forgiveness of hemodialysis patients may play an important role in improving post-traumatic growth. Few studies reveal the relationship between interpersonal relationships, forgiveness, and post-traumatic growth. This study aimed to explore the relationships among interpersonal relationships, forgiveness, and post-traumatic growth in a sample of hemodialysis patients and analyzed the influencing factors associated with post-traumatic growth in hem…

A typology for the interpersonal affective focus in dynamic interpersonal therapy based on a contemporary interpersonal approach.

Dynamic Interpersonal Therapy (DIT) is a brief, time-limited psychodynamic individual therapy in which depressive and anxious symptoms are understood as responses to interpersonal difficulties. Problematic interpersonal representations of the self and others are conceptualized in DIT as the interpersonal affective focus (IPAF), a predominant and recurring interpersonal pattern that is connected to the symptoms and becomes the foundation of treatment. This article reports the development of a typology for classifying IPAFs, which characterizes the predominant style based on contemporary interpe

Interrelationships among measures of premature ejaculation: the central role of perceived control.

INTRODUCTION: Domains of premature ejaculation (PE) include short intravaginal ejaculatory latency time (IELT), poor perceived control over ejaculation, decreased satisfaction with sexual intercourse, and personal distress and interpersonal difficulty related to ejaculation. How these measures interrelate is unknown. AIM: Here, we evaluated the interrelationships between these PE-specific variables, applying cross-sectional data from a large U.S. observational study of men with PE. METHODS: We analyzed data from men with PE identified in a previously reported observational study. PE was diag

Social Memory Biases and Borderline Personality Disorder Features: Relevance of Perceived Social Support.

Poor relationship quality common among individuals with borderline personality disorder (BPD) may result, in part, from biased interpersonal decision-making. We examined memory biases for hypothetical interpersonal partner choices varying in the degree of familiarity. In Part 1 of our study, participants (n = 192) were asked to choose between novel or familiar partners based on lists of traits across six vignettes, and in Part 2, they completed a trait recognition task 36-60 hours later. Lower perceived social support was associated with a memory bias toward novel (over familiar) partners. BPD

Self-injury motives: A person-centered examination.

INTRODUCTION: People report multiple motives for nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI), but few studies have examined how these motives relate to one another. This study identified person-centered classes of NSSI motives, their NSSI and psychopathological correlates, and their utility in predicting future NSSI across two samples. METHODS: Participants were adolescents and young adults (aged 15-35) with recent NSSI recruited from online forums (n = 155, Sample 1) or the community (n = 127, Sample 2). Participants completed measures of NSSI, emotion regulation difficulties, borderline personality diso

Positive Affect as a Buffer between Chronic Stress and Symptom Severity of Emotional Disorders.

Research has demonstrated that stressors play a critical role in the development of generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), social anxiety disorder (SAD), and major depressive disorder (MDD). Separately, deficits in positive affect (PA) have been identified in GAD, SAD, and MDD. While previous research has linked the buffering effects of PA in chronic illness, such effects have yet to be investigated for chronic stressors and emotional disorder-related symptom severity. The purpose of the present study was to examine PA as a moderator of chronic interpersonal and non-interpersonal stress on GAD, S

Therapists' emotional reactions to patients as a mediator in cognitive behavioural treatment of panic disorder with agoraphobia.

The aims of this study were to examine whether therapists' emotional reactions to their patients mediate the effect of personality disorders and interpersonal problem behaviours on the outcome of treatment, focusing on an Axis I disorder; and whether therapists' reactions mediate the effect of personality disorders on the course of interpersonal problems. Therapists completed a checklist of emotional reactions to individual patients after the end of residential cognitive or guided mastery therapy for 46 inpatients with panic disorder with agoraphobia. The severity of DSM-III-R personality diso

Establishing an optimal working relationship with patients with an antisocial personality disorder. Aspects and processes in the therapeutic alliance.

OBJECTIVE: Developing good interpersonal relationships is one of the main impediments for people with an antisocial personality disorder (ASPD). However, in treatment of psychiatric disorders, establishing a strong therapeutic alliance (TA) is important for effective treatment. Nevertheless, there is little knowledge on how to establish this TA with this challenging patient group. This study investigates which factors are important in TA development. METHOD: For this study, a qualitative research methodology is applied. In-depth interviews with therapists experienced in treating ASPD were con…

Social relationships, homelessness, and substance use among emergency department patients.

Background: Emergency department (ED) patients commonly experience both substance use and homelessness, and social relationships impact each in varied ways not fully captured by existing quantitative research. This qualitative study examines how social relationships can precipitate or ameliorate homelessness and the connection (if any) between substance use and social relationships among ED patients experiencing homelessness. Methods: As part of a broader study to develop ED-based homelessness prevention interventions, we conducted in-depth interviews with 25 ED patients who used alcohol or dr

Improving family communication after a new genetic diagnosis: a randomised controlled trial of a genetic counselling intervention.

BACKGROUND: Genetic information given to an individual newly diagnosed with a genetic condition is likely to have important health implications for other family members. The task of communicating with these relatives commonly falls to the newly diagnosed person. Talking to relatives about genetic information can be challenging and is influenced by many factors including family dynamics. Research shows that many relatives remain unaware of relevant genetic information and the possible impact on their own health. This study aims to evaluate whether a specific genetic counselling intervention for

Are adolescents' mutually hostile interactions at home reproduced in other everyday life contexts?

Children involved in mutually hostile interactions at home are at risk of experiencing adjustment problems in other everyday life contexts. However, little is known about whether the pattern of mutual hostility at home is reproduced by high-conflict youths in other interpersonal contexts. In this study, we examined whether adolescents involved in mutually hostile interactions with their parents encounter similar mutually hostile interactions in other interpersonal contexts. We used a longitudinal design, following mid-adolescents over 1 year (N = 2,009, 51% boys, Mage = 14.06, SD = 0.73). The
