Phenomenology of Subjective Anomalous Experiences in People with Schizophrenia.

Current diagnostic criteria for schizophrenia overlook the patient's subjective experience, offering a simplified view. To describe the subjective anomalies in the personal experience of the "lived world" in patients diagnosed with schizophrenia via the EAWE interview (Examination of Anomalous World Experience). A qualitative study was conducted between January and May 2024. Semistructured interviews were conducted with patients diagnosed with schizophrenia, using the thematic axes of the EAWE as a framework. Also, the interviews were recorded and transcribed for analysis using ATLAS.ti.v24 so

Understanding Healing From Psychological Birth Trauma: A Lived Experience Perspective.

INTRODUCTION: Psychological birth trauma affects a significant proportion of birthing individuals globally, with estimates ranging from 18% to 45% perceiving their birth as traumatic and 4% being diagnosed with posttraumatic stress disorder. Despite growing recognition of birth trauma, the lived experience of healing from it remains understudied. METHODS: This qualitative study employed interpretive phenomenological analysis (IPA) to explore how 11 participants, purposively sampled for diverse birth trauma experiences, understood healing from birth trauma. Semistructured interviews were condu

Agreement Among Clinician, Patient, and Independent Interviewer Ratings of Adaptive Functioning.

We examined the interrater reliability and diagnostic efficiency of clinician report (both the treating clinician and independent expert clinical interviewer) and patient self-report of clinically meaningful information pertaining to adaptive functioning. A convenience sample of clinicians (N = 80) and patients (N = 170) from eight community mental health clinics in Israel participated in the study. Our findings suggest that clinicians overall reliably report on adaptive functioning of patients (overall correct classification rates range, 0.74-0.98). Yet, in some areas, they may fail to collec

The diagnostic utility of separation anxiety disorder symptoms: an item response theory analysis.

At present, it is not clear whether the current definition of separation anxiety disorder (SAD) is the optimal classification of developmentally inappropriate, severe, and interfering separation anxiety in youth. Much remains to be learned about the relative contributions of individual SAD symptoms for informing diagnosis. Two-parameter logistic Item Response Theory analyses were conducted on the eight core SAD symptoms in an outpatient anxiety sample of treatment-seeking children (N = 359, 59.3 % female, M Age = 11.2) and their parents to determine the diagnostic utility of each of these symp

Patient-identified disease burden in facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy.

INTRODUCTION: The multitude of symptoms associated with facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy (FSHD) disease burden are of varying importance. The extent of these symptoms and their cumulative effect on the FSHD population is unknown. METHODS: We conducted interviews with adult FSHD patients to identify which symptoms have the greatest effect on their lives. Each interview was recorded, transcribed, coded, and analyzed using a qualitative framework technique, triangulation, and a three-investigator consensus approach. RESULTS: One thousand three hundred seventy-five quotes were obtained thr

Mental health and quality of life of migrants in transit through the Darién gap: A cross-sectional assessment in Panama.

BACKGROUND: Migration through the Darién Gap en route to the US peaked in 2023, with hundreds of thousands of people in transit exposed to physical and psychological health hazards. However, systematic data on mental health conditions for this population remain limited. This study explored the prevalence of psychological symptoms, mental disorders, exposure to psychological trauma, and health-related quality of life among migrants in transit through Darién and described age- and sex-based differences. METHODS: In January 2022, we conducted a cross-sectional mental health assessment at a gover

Estimating trends in serious psychological distress and depression among 18- to 64-year-olds in the United States from 2004 to 2019 using K6 and PHQ scales.

BACKGROUND: Information from large national surveys is potentially useful for examining trends in mental health, but prior research has obtained inconsistent findings. This study attempts to determine whether Kessler 6 and Patient Health Questionnaire measures from different surveys consistently indicate trends in serious psychological distress or depression. METHODS: Annual rates of serious psychological distress or depression were computed for 18- to 64-year-olds from 2004 to 2019 or sub-periods from four major household surveys based on values of Kessler 6, Patient Health Questionnaire 2,

Typology of patients with behavioral addictions or eating disorders during a one-year period of care: Exploring similarities of trajectory using growth mixture modeling coupled with latent class analysis.

OBJECTIVES: Addictions are not restricted to substance-use disorders, and it is now widely recognized that they also include behavioral addictions. Certain individuals with eating disorders also experiment their disorder as an addiction. The objective was to identify typologies of patients presenting with various behavioral addictions or eating disorders according to their evolution within the framework of care, and to specify the factors associated with the differential clinical trajectories. METHODS: We included 302 patients presenting with problem gambling, sexual addiction, compulsive buy

Examining the link between psychological distress, mental health disorders and sharing behaviors among cocaine users.

BACKGROUND: Psychiatric problems and cocaine use are associated with heightened vulnerability for HIV and Hepatitis C infections. Little is known regarding the relationship between psychiatric symptoms, psychiatric diagnoses and injection risk behaviors among cocaine users. We examined the association between psychological distress and injection material sharing among cocaine users, while accounting for comorbid anxious and mood disorders. METHODS: Participants included cocaine users who inject drugs recruited in a prospective cohort study in Montreal, Canada. Diagnosis of mood and anxiety di

Prevalence of functional gastrointestinal disorders in women who report domestic violence to the police.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Retrospective studies found an association between past sexual, physical, or psychological abuse and functional gastrointestinal disorders (FGIDs). However, there are no studies evaluating such an association concurrently with the ongoing abuse. Our aim was to investigate the prevalence of the main FGIDs, functional dyspepsia and irritable bowel syndrome, in 70 women reporting a situation of domestic violence to the police and to evaluate the level of psychological distress and its relationship with the presence of FGID. METHODS: Through an interview between a social worker

A cross-national study of the course of persistent pain in primary care.

Data from the World Health Organization's study of psychological problems in general health care were used to examine the course of persistent pain syndromes among primary care patients. Across 15 sites in 14 countries, 3197 randomly selected primary care patients completed baseline and 12-month follow-up assessments of pain, other somatic symptoms, and anxiety and depressive disorders (the Composite International Diagnostic Interview), and an assessment of occupational role disability (the Social Disability Schedule). Of patients with a persistent pain condition at baseline, 49% had not recov

Patients' views on their decision making during inpatient rehabilitation after newly acquired spinal cord injury-A qualitative interview-based study.

INTRODUCTION: Involving patients in decision making is a legal requirement in many countries, associated with better rehabilitation outcomes, but not easily accomplished during initial inpatient rehabilitation after severe trauma. Providing medical treatment according to the principles of shared decision making is challenging as a point in case for persons with spinal cord injury (SCI). OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to retrospectively explore the patients' views on their participation in decision making during their first inpatient rehabilitation after onset of SCI, in order to optimi

More than just a place to talk: young people's experiences of group psychological therapy as an early intervention for auditory hallucinations.

OBJECTIVES: Auditory hallucinations are extremely distressing, particularly when occurring during adolescence. They may be most responsive to psychological intervention during a three-year critical period following symptom-onset, but as yet no studies have investigated voices groups for young participants with adolescent-onset psychosis. The aim of the current study is to explore the experience of group-CBT amongst a group of young people experiencing distressing auditory hallucinations. DESIGN: This project was planned and conducted in the tradition of idiographic, qualitative psychology. A

Behind the Mask: A Psychodynamic Exploration of the Experiences of Individuals Diagnosed with Social Anxiety Disorder.

The diagnostic category of social anxiety disorder (SAD) is one that is widely drawn upon in mental health settings; SAD is primarily characterized by a marked fear of social performance situations and possible scrutiny by other people (American Psychiatric Association [APA], 1994, 2013). The current study aims to explore the experiences of people diagnosed with SAD. Psychoanalytically informed research interviews, drawing on psychoanalytic ideas around the parameters of engagement and levels of engagement and analysis, were carried out with 4 male and 2 female participants with diagnoses of S

Social anxiety and the ironic effects of positive interviewer feedback.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Positive interviewer feedback should encourage positive experiences and outcomes for interviewees. Yet, positive feedback is inconsistent with socially anxious interviewees' negative self-views. Socially anxious interviewees might experience increased self-focus while attempting to reconcile the inconsistency between their self-perceptions and that feedback. This could interfere with successful interview performance. DESIGN: This study used a 3 (feedback: positive, negative, no) × 2 (social anxiety: high, low) between-subjects design. METHOD: Undergraduate students
