We propose that generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) during ischemia is associated with an increase in intracellular calcium ([Ca2+]i) in pulmonary capillary endothelial cells. We used an isolated rat lung model and epifluorescence microscopy to evaluate [Ca2+]i in subpleural microvascular endothelial cells in situ by ratio imaging of the fluorophores, Calcium Green and Fura Red (CG/FR). Effects of spontaneous seizures on extracellular glutamate and glutamine were studied in the kainate-induced rat model of epilepsy in the chronic phase. Extracellular fluid from the CA1-CA3 regions of the hippocampus was collected with a 2-mm microdialysis probe every 2 min for 5h. EEG seizures with no or mild behavioral components caused 2- to 6-fold elevation of extracellular glutamate. The signs of bovine listeriosis include depression and variable cranial nerve deficits indicative of brain stem inflammation. Because a wide range of cranial nerve deficits exists in bovine listeriosis patients, a thorough neurologic examination and cerebrospinal fluid analysis are essential to accurate diagnosis. Measurements were made of 36C1 influx into squid giant axons whose internal solutes were controlled by means of internal dialysis. When the intracellular chloride concentration was 50mM and the internal concentration of adenosine 5'-triphosphate (ATP) was 4mM, the average chloride influx was 11.6 pmoles/cm2 x sec.
