OBJECTIVE: To investigate the characteristics of decision-making impairment in Parkinson's disease (PD) patients.
METHODS: A total of 20 individuals with idiopathic PD were compared with matched health controls on the Iowa Gambling Task, A series of battery including the assessment working memory, visual spatial ability and verbal fluency was also administered. Limited data exist regarding whether a history of urinary tract infection (UTI) increases risk of developing renal cell carcinoma (RCC). To determine factors that influence the occurrence of congenital cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection, the authors surveyed prospectively 8,254 infants born in eastern Iowa between October 1989 and June 1994. We here assess limbic and orbitofrontal control in 20 patients with essential tremor (ET) and 18 age-matched healthy controls using the Ekman Facial Emotion Recognition Task and the IOWA Gambling Task. Our results show an inverse relation between facial emotion recognition and tremor severity. ET patients also showed worse performance in joy and fear recognition, as well as subtle abnormalities in risk detection, but these differences did not reach significance after correction for multiple testing.
