PURPOSE: To evaluate the clinical indications and postoperative results of iris-sutured posterior chamber intraocular lens implants performed during penetrating keratoplasty.
METHODS: Medical records were retrospectively reviewed for preoperative indications and postoperative results of 342 consecutive patients (366 eyes) who underwent iris suturing of a posterior chamber intraocular lens implant during penetrating keratoplasty over a 9-year period.

A 9-year-old girl with refractory glaucoma with an anterior chamber intraocular lens underwent transscleral contact diode laser cyclophotocoagulation. Slit-lamp examination and ultrasound biomicroscopy revealed iris retraction and retroflexion at 2 weeks of follow-up. The probable cause of this complication is discussed.

We show that iris tissue in the adult rat eye, which is embryonically related to the neural retina, can generate cells expressing differentiated neuronal antigens. In addition, the Crx gene transfer induced the specific antigens for rod photoreceptors in the iris-derived cells, which was not seen in the adult hippocampus-derived neural stem cells. Our findings demonstrate a remarkable plasticity of adult iris tissue with potential clinical applications, as autologous iris tissue can be feasibly obtained with peripheral iridectomy.

METHOD: Case report. A 37-year-old man presented with Cogan-Reese syndrome.
RESULTS: Visual acuity was 0.5 in the right eye and 1.0 in the left eye. A case is reported in which large colobomas of the retina and choroid are found bilaterally in a young female who also has a pituitary tumor and mental retardation. Visual field data are presented and correlated with the retinal appearances. Relevant embryology is reviewed, and a table of systemic abnormalities associated with retinal/choroidal colobomas is presented.

A fixed and dilated pupil is an uncommon postoperative complication after penetrating keratoplasty (PK) for keratoconus. Although the clinical features have been well described, the precise aetiology is uncertain. We performed anterior segment fluorescein angiography in the early postoperative period on three patients who developed fixed, dilated pupils after apparently uncomplicated surgery. All of the eyes had severe iris ischaemia. A possible role for a postoperative rise in intraocular pressure in the aetiology of this syndrome is discussed.

Typical isolated ocular coloboma is a congenital abnormality caused by a defective closure of the embryonic fissure of the optic cup. Although an irregular autosomal dominant mechanism of inheritance has been proposed, there is some evidence of other modes of transmission and etiologies. This report shows an unexpected recurrence of iris coloboma, occurring in three sibships of the same family, that could be explained by a "delayed mutation" or "premutation" mechanism.

Prominent radial iris blood vessels created small but definite pupillary notches in five children with persistent hyperplastic primary vitreous and persistence of the tunica vasculosa lentis. Six children in three families showed variations of the rare genetic syndrome, ectopia lentis et pupillae. The siblings in two affected families demonstrated intermingling of simple lens ectopia with ectopia lentis et pupillae, suggesting that some types of simple ectopia lentis represent an incompletely expressed form of the full ectopia lentis et pupillae syndrome. Those patients with simple lens ectopia as well as those with ectopic lenses and pupils had striking transillumination of the iris periphery. Microphakia, cataract, and other anterior segment abnormalities were also observed.

Fourteen patients (ten women, four men) with iris nevus (Cogan-Reese) syndrome, all having unilateral glaucoma, were studied clinically.
