The effects of central and peripheral duct occlusion on the pancreas of the pig were investigated. The occlusion was obtained by injecting into the distal part of the pancreatic duct an ether diluted delicron or a fluid silicone solution. The pancreatic duct was then interrupted. At different intervals, gross morphology of the residual pancreas was studied and specimens were obtained for histology, immunocytochemistry and electronmicroscopy. Cyclosporin (U.S.A.N. cyclosporine) was used prophylactically to suppress the development of insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus in BB Wistar rats. In this rat strain diabetes spontaneously develops between 60 and 120 days of age and this condition resembles human type 1 diabetes. The pituitary gland was examined from 623 immature baboons (Papio cynocephalus and Papio anubis). Findings included microscopic cysts in the pars distalis (132), pars intermedia (two) and pars nervosa (one). In 641 necropsies five cases of unilateral thyroid glands were noted.
