BACKGROUND: Fracture of the scaphoid is the most common fracture of a carpal bone. Nevertheless, the diagnosis of SF might be challenging. During the 11-year period from 1997 to 2007, 321 isolates of Listeria monocytogenes from sporadic cases of invasive listeriosis were reported to the national reference laboratory in Israel. Of these isolates, 113 (35%) were identified from perinatal cases, and 208 (65%) from non-perinatal cases. The prevalent serovars were 4b, 1/2b, 1/2a and 4c. BACKGROUND: The incidence of perinatal, early-onset Group B streptococcal sepsis is very low in Israel and there are no local guidelines for prevention of the disease.

We performed emm typing of M nontypeable invasive group A streptococcal (GAS) isolates collected in a prospective population-based study in Israel. One hundred twenty of 131 isolates (92%) had emm sequences compatible with GAS, consisting of 51 different emm types. Eleven isolates were found to be group G streptococcus. Skin lesions are rare in visceral leishmaniasis, especially in Mediterranean countries. We describe an unusual case of visceral leishmaniasis in a 41-year-old man that began with a skin lesion. The parasites isolated from both the skin lesion and the bone marrow were typed as Leishmania donovani sensu stricto. This pathogen is not endemic in Israel or neighboring countries; its contribution to adult visceral leishmaniasis in Israel is summarized.

A house gecko, Hemidactylus turcicus, from an Israeli locality was found infected by Cryptosporidium sp. Infection was recovered in the anterior gut, upon examination by a transmission electron microscope. It comprised from 2.9 x 3.3 microns undivided and 2.6-3.3 x 3.8-3.9 microns dividing meronts, 1.9-2.3 x 2.0-2.6 microns young macrogamonts, and a 3.3 x 3.9 microns sporulated oocyst containing in cross section 4 sporozoites and a residuum. Oocyst dimensions were smaller and apparently not conspecific with the Cryptosporidium sp. reported from the introduced H. turcicus in Texas.

We are treating 11 children in our AIDS clinic. All were infected by vertical transmission from carrier mothers. However, among 31 HIV-carrier AIDS patients who were under follow-up during pregnancy, supposedly taking zidovudine prophylaxis, only 1 (3.3%) gave birth to a baby infected with HIV. Bicycle-related head injuries are an important cause of injury and death among bicycle riders. The use of bicycle helmets could reduce the rate of serious head trauma among bicyclists involved in accidents. A nationwide survey was conducted in Israel to determine the usage of such helmets. This survey preceded a media campaign encouraging the use of bicycle helmets. A second survey compared the rates of helmet usage following the media campaign with those rates prior to the campaign.
