Renal chromophobe cell carcinomas (ChCC) and oncocytomas express KIT. This character seems to reflect their common histogenesis from distal nephrons. In the normal kidney, however, the expression and localization of KIT are unclear. KIT expression in angiomyolipoma and congenital mesoblastic nephroma (CMN), is still controversial. c-kit mutations are reportedly rare in ChCC, but there is little information in other renal neoplasms, and no reported data on mutations of platelet-derived growth factor receptor (PDGFR). In order to address these issues the authors examined five ChCC, five oncocyto

Xanthogranulomatous (XG) inflammatory disease is a rare benign disease involving various organs, including the gallbladder, bile duct, pancreas, spleen, stomach, small bowel, colon, appendix, kidney, adrenal gland, urachus, urinary bladder, retroperitoneum, and female genital organs. The imaging features of XG inflammatory disease are nonspecific, usually presenting as a heterogeneous solid or cystic mass. The disease may also extend to adjacent structures. Due to its aggressive nature, it is occasionally misdiagnosed as a malignant neoplasm. Herein, we review the radiological features and cli

Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumours (IMTs) have been described in lung, bladder, spleen, breast, pancreas, liver, colon, spermatic cord, prostate, peripheral nerves, orbit and kidney. Traditionally believed as having a reactive pathogenesis, IMTs are now viewed more as a neoplasm. This report describes a case of a renal IMT in a 14-year-old girl with spina bifida associated neurogenic bladder and a history of recurrent urinary tract infections. This represents a unique case as pediatric renal IMTs are very rare in the literature. We discuss how this patient was managed and how she presented c

Mixed epithelial and stromal tumor (MEST) of the kidney is an unusual benign neoplasm that predominantly occurs in middle-aged females. It typically appears as a well-circumscribed multiseptate mass with solid components on computed tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance image (MRI), reflecting its characteristics of an admixture of stromal proliferation and epithelial cells consisting of multiple cysts. We present a rare case of 61-year-old woman with MEST, which manifested as a multilocular cystic mass with a polypoid component protruding into the renal pelvis and ureter. To our best knowledg

The authors present a case of duodenal angiomyolipoma. Angiomyolipoma is a benign neoplasm, the most common site being the kidney. Extrarenal angiomyolipomas are rare. Only one case of duodenal angiomyolipoma has been reported. A 66 year old man presented with GI bleeding for two years. Endoscopy revealed a duodenal polyp which on histopathology revealed features of angiomyolipoma. On immunohistochemistry, smooth muscle component was positive for Smooth Muscle Actin. HMB-45 showed mild focal positivity. Patient had no history of tuberous sclerosis. Surgical excision of angiomyolipoma is usuall

A case of 42 years-old man with bilateral big sized (12 x 5 cm and 10 x 4,5 cm) oncocytoma in submandibular glands was presented. Oncocytoma is a rare benign neoplasm observed in numerous of organs. In the case described besides submandibular glands tumours, accessory oncocytic tumours in both kidneys were diagnosed. It was the reason of earlier unilateral nephrectomy. Surgical treatment was applied. The comparison of the both tumours histology allowed to establish proper diagnosis. The case is presented because of the explicitly of the oncocytoma location especially in the both submandibular

Urothelial carcinoma with choriocarcinomatous features is a rare malignancy arising in the urinary bladder or renal pelvis. We report the case of a 60-year-old man with a biphasic neoplasm of the right kidney composed of papillary urothelial carcinoma and choriocarcinoma. Widespread hepatic and pulmonary metastases with choriocarcinomatous features were found on autopsy 6 weeks after initial diagnosis. Chromosomal analysis revealed a close genetic relationship between the papillary urothelial and choriocarcinomatous tumor components, documenting for the first time that choriocarcinoma of the r

Somatostatin receptor imaging using 68 Ga-DOTATATE PET is widely popular for evaluation of neuroendocrine tumors. 68 Ga-DOTATATE PET/CT shows highest physiologic uptake in spleen followed by other organs such as kidneys, adrenal glands, and liver. Hemangiomas, although rare, are the most common primary benign neoplasm of the spleen, composed of endothelial-lined vascular channels. We present a case of 77-year-old man who underwent 68 Ga-DOTATATE PET/CT scan for evaluation of pancreatic neuroendocrine tumor and incidentally demonstrated intense radiotracer uptake in splenic hemangiomata.

Small bowel bleeding should be considered in patients with overt or occult gastrointestinal hemorrhage after normal upper and lower endoscopic examination. Angiodysplasia appearing as multiple flat vascular tufts is the most common cause of small bowel bleeding in patients over 40 years old. Polypoid angiodysplasia, however, is extremely rare. This report illustrates a unique case of solitary polypoid angiodysplasia in the jejunum of an adult with chronic kidney disease, who presented with an occult gastrointestinal bleed. The angiodysplasia mimicked tumorous growth, potentially indicative of

A 77-year-old female, who suffered from rheumatoid arthritis and hypothyroidism, developed severe muscle weakness. Clinical features, blood results and muscle biopsy suggested a possible diagnosis of dermatomyositis. A computed tomography of the chest, abdomen and pelvis showed a solid mass in the left kidney. She underwent a left laparoscopic nephrectomy and histology confirmed conventional (clear cell) renal cell carcinoma. She recovered slowly and almost back to normal life after 6 months. Early appreciation of the typical skin rash may provide a clue to the diagnosis and screening for neop

Cervical cancer of the uterus rarely develops systemic secondary amyloidosis. We present the case of a 66-year-old female patient who manifested systemic amyloid A (AA) amyloidosis in the kidney, digestive tract, and cervix of the uterus, secondary to cervical cancer. She exhibited nephrotic syndrome, intractable diarrhea, and mild fever 3 months after she underwent an extended hysterectomy with postoperative cisplatin-based chemotherapy and whole pelvic irradiation. Further examinations revealed AA amyloidosis of the kidney and colon and cytomegalovirus infection in the colon. AA amyloid depo

Sarcomas of the retroperitoneum represent 0.2% of tumors and 15% of soft tissue sarcomas. Retro-peritoneal differentiated liposarcoma must be distinguished from the connective neoplasm of kidney. The main features of these tumors are: the rapid growth, infiltration of surrounding tissue, the tendency to local relapse and very fast metastasis (60-80%). Authors report a clinical case of a patient 61 old years with occasional reflected ultrasound is performed for lumbar pain a retro peritoneal mass. Composite hemangioendothelioma (CHE) is an extremely rare vascular neoplasm that is characterized by an admixture of benign, low-grade malignant, and malignant vascular components. It is usually located superficially in the dermis and subcutis of the extremities, and other sites involved include the head and neck region, oral mucosa, and viscera of the kidney and spleen. CHE has a low-grade malignant potential because it is locally aggressive. Here, we report a case of CHE in the heart in a 46-year-old man, who presented with a palpable mass arising from his right ventricle. Echocardiogram ima

Post-transplant lymphoproliferative disorder (PTLD) is a term used to describe a range of lymphoproliferative disorders that occur after solid organ transplant. Although the clinical presentation is variable, primary cutaneous PTLD typically presents as isolated nodules that appear as dermal-based proliferations. We present a case of a 70-year-old woman with a history of a kidney transplant who presented with a 2-month history of an asymptomatic, erythematous plaque on the right shin, clinically suspected to be squamous cell carcinoma in situ. Histomorphology demonstrated a dermal proliferatio

CD31 immunoreactivity has been reported in human nonendothelial tumors of both epithelial and mesenchymal origin. This study examined CD31 immunoreactivity of 347 formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded normal, nonneoplastic, and neoplastic canine tissues. CD31 expression was considered positive if at least 10% of the cell population had membranous reactivity. Labeling with the CD31 antibody (clone JC/70A) was observed in 16 samples of normal organs (liver, kidney, lymph node), 6 of 6 specimens of hepatic nodular hyperplasia, 3 of 3 hepatic regenerative nodules, 1 of 4 anal sac carcinomas, 6 of 6 he

INTRODUCTION: Iron is essential for normal, neoplasmic and microbial cells. Transferrin (Tf) is responsible for iron transport and its interactions with chelators are of physiological and toxicological importance and could lead to new therapeutic applications.
AREAS COVERED: Differential interactions of Tf with chelators such as deferiprone (L1) could be used to modify toxicity and disease pathways in relation to iron and other metal metabolism. Iron mobilization by L1 could achieve normal body iron stores in thalassemia patients. Iron mobilization from the reticuloendothelial system by L1 an

Renal medullary carcinoma (RMC) is a rare and aggressive malignant epithelial neoplasm of the kidney. It almost exclusively affects children and young adults with a sickle cell trait or sickle cell disease. The majority of RMC patients present with widely disseminated disease at the time of diagnosis. Herein, we report two cases of young African-American patients with history of sickle cell trait, hematuria and renal mass, who present with malignant right pleural effusions. The cytology of pleural effusion reveals predominantly clusters and individual tumor cells. The tumor cells show high nuc

BACKGROUND: The DICER1 syndrome is a tumor-predisposition disorder caused by germline pathogenic variation in DICER1 and is associated with cystic nephroma and other renal neoplasms. Dicer1 mouse and rare human DICER1 syndrome case reports describe structural kidney and collecting system anomalies. We investigated renal function and the frequency of structural abnormalities of the kidney and collecting system in individuals with germline loss-of-function variants in DICER1.
METHODS: In this family-based cohort study, prospectively ascertained germline DICER1-mutation carriers (DICER1-carriers
