The sensitivities of IgM detection, virus isolation, and RT-PCR for the diagnosis of measles infection were assessed using samples collected from confirmed measles cases from 2006 to 2009. The optimal timing of specimen collection and the preferred specimen type(s) for these tests were also determined. IgM detection showed highest sensitivity when serum samples were collected >or=5 days after rash onset. Virus isolation gave the highest sensitivity when samples were collected <or=3 days after rash onset, with nasopharyngeal aspirate being the best specimen type, followed by urine and throat/co

Staphylococcus xylosus typically is described as a nonpathogenic common inhabitant of rodent skin. Reports of S. xylosus as a primary pathogen in human and veterinary medicine are scarce. Here we report 37 cases, affecting 12 strains of laboratory mice, of spontaneous infections in which S. xylosus was isolated and considered to be the primary pathogen contributing to the death or need for euthanasia of the animal. Infection with S. xylosus was the major cause of death or euthanasia in 3 strains of mice deficient in the production of phagocyte superoxide due to defects in NADPH oxidase. NADPH-

Strains of Salmonella typhi implicated in two separate cases of laboratory acquired infection from patients and the medical laboratory technologists who processed the patients' samples were analysed by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis. Although all four isolates were of bacteriophage type E1, PFGE was able to demonstrate that the strains responsible for the two laboratory acquired cases were not genetically related. The PFGE patterns of the isolates from the MLTs were found to be identical to those of the corresponding patients after digestion with restriction enzyme AvrII. This provided genet

Subcutaneous fungal infections, which typically result from traumatic introduction (implantation) of fungal elements into the skin or underlying tissues, can present as a range of different clinical entities including phaeohyphomycosis, chromoblastomycosis, subcutaneous nodules or masses, and genuine eumycetoma. Here, we mined our laboratory information management system for such infections in humans and domestic animals for the period 2016-2022, including (i) fungal isolates referred for identification and/or susceptibility testing; (ii) infections diagnosed at our laboratory using panfungal

Background Central India is hyperendemic for dengue and chikungunya virus infections, with yearly outbreaks being recorded. As these infections are clinically overlapping, co-infection of these viruses poses a diagnostic challenge. Therefore, it is imperative to identify them using serological or molecular tests. In this study, seroprevalence of dengue and chikungunya mono-infection as well as co-infections was estimated in suspected patients presented at our tertiary care center. Also, we compared the biochemical and other lab parameters of all the dengue and chikungunya mono-infected and co-

Chikungunya virus (CHIKV) poses a significant global health threat, re-emerging as a mosquito-transmitted pathogen that caused high fever, rash, and severe arthralgia. In Thailand, a notable CHIKV outbreak in 2019-2020 affected approximately 20,000 cases across 60 provinces, underscoring the need for effective mosquito control protocols. Previous studies have highlighted the role of midgut bacteria in the interaction between mosquito vectors and pathogen infections, demonstrating their ability to protect the insect from invading pathogens. However, research on the midgut bacteria of Aedes (Ae.

Pneumocystis pneumonia (PCP) and pulmonary tuberculosis infection (PTB) are important opportunistic infections in HIV-infected patients. The diagnosis remains challenging since Pneumocystis jirovecii cannot be cultured, and expectorated-sputum is frequently difficult to obtain. The monoclonal-antibody detection for P. jirovecii from induced sputum is promising in diagnosing PCP. This study determined the percentage of PCP in HIV-infected patients with pulmonary infiltrates at three government hospitals in Jakarta. The concurrent infection of PTB was carefully documented as well. This cross-sec

BACKGROUND: Healthcare workers (HCWs) face high occupational exposure to SARS-CoV-2 and are a priority group for vaccination. Both natural infection and vaccination-individually or combined as hybrid immunity-confer protection against SARS-CoV-2 infection. This study aimed to evaluate the protection conferred by hybrid, infection-induced, and booster vaccine-induced immunity against laboratory-confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infections in HCWs during the circulation of three pandemic and one post-pandemic Omicron sublineages.
METHODS: We conducted a prospective cohort study of HCWs from 18 hospitals acr

The laboratory diagnosis of tick-borne infections is a major interdisciplinary issue, closely linked not only to advances in molecular biological methods but also to changes in ecosystems and biodiversity caused by climatic and anthropogenic factors. These factors significantly influence the epidemiological situation both globally and in the Czech Republic, where a marked increase in the incidence of serious tick-borne infections has been observed in recent years. Current diagnostic approaches combine indirect serological methods (e.g., ELISA, Western blot, and immunofluorescence assays) with

BACKGROUND: Respiratory viral infections, including Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV), Influenza (Flu), and human Respiratory Syncytial Virus (hRSV), are major global health concerns. While their impact on vulnerable groups is known, their characteristics in healthy adults (18-65 years) are less clear. This study aimed to determine the incidence and clinical-laboratory features of RSV and HMPV in this population and compared them with those of Influenza A(H1N1) and influenza A(H3N2) for improved epidemiological and diagnostic understanding.
METHODOLOGY: A retrospective analysis was conducted on da

The Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex (MTBC) represents one of the most significant bacterial pathogen groups affecting both animals and humans worldwide. This review provides a comprehensive analysis of MTBC species distribution across different animal hosts and evaluates current laboratory diagnostic methodologies for pathogen detection and identification. The complex comprises seven primary species: Mycobacterium bovis, M. caprae, M. tuberculosis, M. microti, M. canettii, M. africanum, and M. pinnipedii, each exhibiting distinct host preferences, geographical distributions, and pathogenic

It is currently unknown whether all Plasmodium falciparum-infected mosquitoes are equally infectious. We assessed sporogonic development using cultured gametocytes in the Netherlands and naturally circulating strains in Burkina Faso. We quantified the number of sporozoites expelled into artificial skin in relation to intact oocysts, ruptured oocysts, and residual salivary gland sporozoites. In laboratory conditions, higher total sporozoite burden was associated with shorter duration of sporogony (p<0.001). Overall, 53% (116/216) of infected Anopheles stephensi mosquitoes expelled sporozoites i

BACKGROUND: Lower-extremity amputations are a common complication of poorly controlled diabetes and contribute to significant morbidity and mortality in diabetic patients. We sought to determine whether objective data points obtained on presentation or hospital admission, including white blood cell (WBC) count, hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c), C-reactive protein (CRP), and descriptive patient demographics allow for the ability to predict optimal amputation levels and outcomes of lower-extremity amputation in the diabetic population.
METHODS: A retrospective analysis of 162 patients was performed evalu

Diagnosing malaria using standard techniques is time-consuming. With limited staffing in many laboratories, this may lead to delays in reporting. Innovative technologies are changing the diagnostic landscape and may help alleviate staffing shortages. The miLab MAL, an automated artificial intelligence-driven instrument was compared with standard microscopy at LabCorp reference laboratories. Four hundred eight samples submitted for parasitic examination were prepared with thick and thin smears and Noul's malaria platform miLab MAL, and evaluated for positivity, negativity, percent positivity, a

Since May 2022, multiple human Monkeypox cases were identified in nonendemic countries, mainly among men who have sex with men. We aimed to report the features, clinical course, management, and outcome of the Monkeypox cases diagnosed in the Dermatology and Infectious Disease Units of the San Martino Hospital, Genoa, Italy. We performed an observational study of the Monkeypox cases diagnosed from July 1 until August 31, 2022, collecting clinical, laboratory, and histological data. We studied 16 Monkeypox-infected men (14 homosexual, 2 bisexual) with a median age of 37 years. Three were HIV-inf

BackgroundSeveral studies have investigated a possible association between respiratory infection and acute myocardial infarction (MI). As both influenza and pneumococcal infections are vaccine preventable, understanding the populations affected by virus-induced cardiovascular complications is important to guide public health and clinical practice.AimThis observational study aimed to quantify the association between laboratory-confirmed respiratory bacteria or virus infections and risk of first MI or stroke, by using self-controlled case series (SCCS) analysis of anonymised linked electronic Da

BACKGROUND: Babesia spp. are apicomplexan parasites which infect a wide range of mammalian hosts. Historically, most Babesia species were described based on the assumed host specificity and morphological features of the intraerythrocytic stages. New DNA-based approaches challenge the traditional species concept and host specificity in Babesia. Using such tools, the presence of Babesia DNA was reported in non-specific mammalian hosts, including B. canis in feces and tissues of insectivorous bats, opening questions on alternative transmission routes. The aim of the present study was to evaluate
