A systematic workflow for utilizing and evaluating large language models in public health policy framing analysis.

BACKGROUND: For public health policy research, it is crucial to monitor policy debates to inform evidence-based policymaking. One popular method is to analyze the news for salient frames used to argue for or against a controversial topic. However, this method is time and resource-intensive since domain experts need to manually analyze relevant articles to identify frames. This study presents an approach for using large language models (LLMs) to extract frames and to systematically evaluate results. METHODS: Building on the results of a framing analysis of the German media debate about a tax o…

Defending against deepfake speech attacks via feature dropout and dropin regularization in large audio language models.

Deepfakes have raised widespread concern owing to their threats to privacy, security, and societal trust, driving growing research interest in effective detection methods. Audio deepfake detection has moved from handcrafted-feature classifiers to end-to-end deep learning architectures and, more recently, to self-supervised speech foundation models and general-purpose speech recognizers such as Whisper. The use of instruction-following speech large language models (LLMs), of which Speech Audio Language Music Open Neural Network (SALMONN) is a representative example, remains comparatively less e…

Simulated responses from large language models are weak proxies for human economic preferences across 74 countries.

Large-scale surveys are central to investigating economic preferences but are costly and slow. Can large language model (LLM)-simulated responses substitute for human survey data? We conducted a virtual Global Preference Survey, simulating six experimentally validated economic preferences for 67,201 matched human respondents across 74 countries. Across 20 LLM configurations with diverse prompts and robustness checks, we found systematic but modest individual-level alignment (87.5% of Spearman correlations have 95% confidence intervals (CIs) above zero), with LLMs recovering the direction of as

Near-optimal P300 speller performance using large language models: A multi-model analysis with performance bounds.

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a progressive neurodegenerative disease, severely impairs communication, requiring assistive technologies that restore interaction. The P300 speller brain-computer interface (BCI) enables communication by translating EEG responses into text; however, its practical adoption is limited by slow typing speed and the need for subject-specific calibration. Recent work has demonstrated that large language models (LLMs), such as GPT-2, can significantly improve the performance of the P300 speller by predicting words. However, it remains unclear whether these gains …

Prompt-to-policy: Leveraging large language models to guide deep reinforcement learning in public health emergencies.

Rapid and effective decision-making is critical in public health emergencies, where resource allocation must balance multiple objectives under uncertain conditions. Traditional optimization methods often struggle with computational complexity and real-time, heterogeneous data. To address these challenges, we propose a hybrid intelligent agent combining an enhanced Double Deep Q-Network (D2QN-JDA) with large language models (LLMs). The D2QN-JDA improves learning stability and adaptability through joint state-action inputs, dynamic exploration rate, and adaptive reward normalization. The LLM com…
