Dermoscopy for the Diagnosis of Creeping Hair Caused by Ingrowing Hair: A Case Report.

Creeping hair is a rare condition characterized by creeping eruption with a black line at the advancing end, mimicking cutaneous larva migrans. The condition is also referred to as cutaneous pili migrans, migrating hair, and embedded hair. A total of 52 cases have been reported since 1957 and most cases were published in English. Herein, we report a case in which creeping hair occurred in the iliac region and review the literature from 1957 to February 2021. A 35-year-old Chinese female presented with a black moving linear eruption that had migrated from the lower abdomen to the iliac region w…

Development of the serological response in rabbits infected with Toxocara canis and Toxascaris leonina.

The indirect fluorescent antibody test using frozen sections of infective Toxocara canis and Toxascaris leonina eggs, and the enzyme linked … om rabbits infected with Toxascaris leonina occurred, indicating that the serodiagnosis of visceral larva migrans using Toxocara canis excretory-secretory antigen may still prove unsatisfactory when considering the role of Toxascaris as a possible causative agent.

The neurology of parasitic diseases and malaria.

Neurologists should be aware of parasitic diseases occurring in travelers and recent migrants because the world has become a global village as a result of tourism and immigration. Global warming is changing the distribution of diseases formerly confined to the tropics. The two most common parasitic diseases of the nervous system are Plasmodium falciparum malaria presenting as a febrile encephalopathy with normal CSF and neurocysticercosis causing seizures with focal MRI lesions or with intracranial hypertension. Numerous parasites may cause larva migrans with eosinophilic meningitis. Spinal co…

Cerebral toxocariasis: a possible cause of epileptic seizure in children.

INTRODUCTION: Toxocariasis is a worldwide human helminthiasis, which is mostly asymptomatic and caused by toxocara canis, a roundworm in dogs. These can cause visceral larva migrans syndrome in humans who ingest contaminated soil. CNS manifestation with a focal mass lesion is very rare, seizures often being the first symptom. CASE REPORT: We describe an 11-year-old girl presenting with a generalized epileptic seizure and eosinophilia in blood. Under antibiotic therapy under the assumption of toxoplasmosis the lesion did not decrease and surgical resection was considered. We used computer-assi…

Ivermectin in human medicine.

Ivermectin is a potent macro-cyclic lactone causing paralysis in many nematodes and arthropods through an influx of chloride ions across cell membranes. It is currently the drug of choice for human onchocerciasis and shows potent microfilaricidal activity against the other major filarial parasites of human (Wuchereria bancrofti, Brugia malayi, Loa loa and Mansonella ozzardi) but not against M. perstans. Whether or not it also kills the adult-stage of these parasites is currently under study. Ivermectin also has excellent efficacy in both human strongyloidiasis and cutaneous larva migrans for w…

Toxocara canis infection: clinical and epidemiological associations with seropositivity in kindergarten children.

No child had evidence of ocular toxocariasis on retinal examination. For the whole sample, poor reading achievement, marked distractibility, and lower intelligence were associated with seropositivity, but by using multiple regre …

Production of monoclonal antibody against Toxocara cati second-stage larvae and its application for the detection of circulating antigens.

Toxocariasis is an important zoonotic disease caused by the second-stage larvae of Toxocara species. Human toxocariasis is usually diagnosed … the new antigen detection system provides a useful method for the diagnosis of visceral and ocular larva migrans caused by T. cati and fulfils the requirements of a serological method for diagnosis of toxocariasis.

Migration Pattern and Tissue Tropism of Toxascaris leonina (Linstow, 1902) Larvae: An in vivo Evaluation.

BACKGROUND: : The role of Toxascaris leonina in visceral larva migrans is controversial. This study aimed to investigate the migratory behavior of T. leonina larvae across different organs in mice. METHODS: Six-week-old Swiss albino mice (n = 26) were randomly allocated into six experimental groups and one control group. Each mouse in the experimental groups was orally inoculated with 1,000 embryonated T. leonina eggs. The animals were euthanized at 2, 5, 10, 15, 20 and 30 dpi (days post-infection). Tissue samples were examined for larval presence and associated pathological changes using dig…

Parasitic infections. Treatment and developmental therapeutics. 1. Necatoriasis.

Another clinical manifestation often associated with hookworm infections is cutaneous larva migrans (CLM). It is a well recognized, usually self-limiting condition caused by the infectious larvae of nematodes. CLM is characterized by skin eruption and represents a clinical description rather than a definitive diagnosis. Of the hookworm parasites, …

[Dermatologic problems arising during foreign travel].

The skin is a highly exposed organ during vacation times, especially during travel to countries with subtropical and tropical climates. Prolonged stay in these countries significantly increases the risk of contracting rarely seen dermatoses such as leishmaniasis, larva migrans and myiasis. The bites of various flies may provoke itching and excoriations that may be infected with Staphylococcus aureus and/or hemolytic streptococci, resulting in impetigo, furunculosis or erysipelas. Elderly persons spending weeks in the tropical sun may develop drug-induced phototoxic or photoallergic rash due to…

Covert toxocariasis--a cause of recurrent abdominal pain in childhood.

Toxocariasis, usually caused by Toxocara canis, is a zoonosis acquired by ingestion of worms which inhabit the gut of young canines. Domestic pets, such as dogs, become infected from soil in public parks and playgrounds which are often heavily contaminated. Although toxocariasis is often regarded as having two principal, though uncommon, manifestations--visceral larva migrans (VLM) and ocular toxocariasis (OT)--recent studies have suggested otherwise. A third, more common, condition, termed 'covert toxocariasis', describes patients in whom positive toxocara serology is associated with a number…

Intestinal helminths of hospital patients in Kavango territory, Namibia.

In-patient and out-patient faeces examination reports from the State Hospital in Rundu, Kavango territory, Namibia, gave some idea of the pr … trongyloides, while fishing and other activities enhance the transmission of S. mansoni infections. Larva migrans, probably due to Ancyclostoma braziliense or A. caninum, is common in the area. Studies involving schoolchildren would provide more accurate assessment of the prevalences of the various helminths.

Clinical features of covert toxocariasis.

The clinical features found in 14 children with toxocara ELISA titres of greater than or equal to 0.7 were compared with those found in 34 t … atures. It is suggested that in addition to the two well recognised clinical conditions of visceral larva migrans and ocular toxocariasis the clinical entity of covert toxocariasis should receive recognition. Eosinophilia may or may not be present in this condition.

Immunodiagnostic tests for protozoan and helminthic infections.

Immunodiagnostic tests for human protozoan and helminthic infections are reviewed. The need for immunodiagnostic tests varies with each infection but is of paramount importance in those infections that cannot be parasitologically diagnosed readily such as toxoplasmosis, pneumocystosis, Chagas' disease, trichinosis, hydatidosis, cysticercosis, and visceral larva migrans. Immunoassays are also needed for those worldwide highly prevalent infections with severe morbidity to be used in seroepidemiology and in the follow-up evaluation of control programs. The most important are malaria, schistosomia…
