Using latent class analysis to empirically classify maltreatment according to the developmental timing, duration, and co-occurrence of abuse types.

BACKGROUND: Individuals can have vastly different maltreatment experiences depending on the types, developmental timing, and duration of abuse. Women and men may be differentially affected by distinct abuse patterns. OBJECTIVE: To examine whether maltreatment subgroups could be identified based on the types, developmental timing, and duration of abuse, and to determine their prevalence among a large, community-based sample. We also examined sex differences in associations of maltreatment subgroups with adverse health outcomes. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: Data came from 9310 women and men (95 %

Polyvictimization, Emotion Dysregulation, Symptoms of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder, and Behavioral Health Problems among Justice-Involved Youth: a Latent Class Analysis.

Among the 90% of adolescents involved in juvenile justice who have experienced traumatic victimization, a sub-group may be at highest risk due to histories of multiple types of interpersonal and non-interpersonal trauma, termed polyvictims. Latent class analyses (LCA) have identified polyvictimized subgroups in several studies of adolescents and adults, but only one study of traumatic victimization has been conducted with justice-involved youth (Ford et al. 2013). The current investigation replicates and extends that study's findings using LCA to assess a wider range of victimization- and nonv

Investigating injury severities of motorcycle riders: A two-step method integrating latent class cluster analysis and random parameters logit model.

Due to the wide existence of heterogeneous nature in traffic safety data, traditional methods used to investigate motorcyclist rider injury severity always lead to masking of some underlying relationships which may be critical for the formulation of efficient safety countermeasures. Instead of applying one single model to the whole dataset or focusing on pre-defined crash types as done in previous studies, the present study proposes a two-step method integrating latent class cluster analysis and random parameters logit model to explore contributing factors influencing the injury levels of moto

Discovering the impact of reading coursework and discipline-specific mentorship on first-year teachers' self-efficacy: a latent class analysis.

Teacher self-efficacy is critical because it predicts teachers' future behavior and impacts teacher turnover. Most teachers begin their career with moderate to high self-efficacy for teaching, but often experience a sharp decline during the first year of teaching. After the first year, their self-efficacy begins to increase but rarely rises to the level it was prior to beginning teaching. Therefore, examining first-year teachers' self-efficacy is extremely important. Previous research generally depicts teachers as a homogeneous group, relying on variable-centered approaches and including self-

A latent class analysis of substance use and culture among gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men.

Assessments of gay and bisexual men's substance use often obscures salient sociocultural and identity-related experiences related to how they use drugs. Latent class analysis was used to examine how patterns of substance use represent the social, economic and identity-related experiences of this population. Participants were sexually active gay and bisexual men (including other men who have sex with men), aged ≥ 16 years, living in Metro Vancouver (n = 774). LCA indicators included all substances used in the past six months self-reported by more than 30 men. Model selection was made with consi…

Screening high-risk clusters for developing birth defects in mothers in Shanxi Province, China: application of latent class cluster analysis.

BACKGROUND: Few studies on cluster-based synthetic effects of multiple risk factors for birth defects have been reported. The present study aimed to identify maternal exposure clusters, explore the association between clusters of risk factors and birth defects, and further screen women with high risk for birth defects among expectant mothers. METHODS: Data were drawn from a large-scale, retrospective epidemiological survey of birth defects from 2006 to 2008 in six counties of Shanxi Province, China, using a three-level stratified random cluster sampling technique. Overall risk factors were ex

Understanding the heterogeneity of BPD symptoms through latent class analysis: initial results and clinical correlates among inner-city substance users.

The current study investigated the heterogeneity of borderline personality disorder (BPD) symptoms in a sample of 382 inner-city, predominantly African American male substance users through the use of latent class analysis. A 4-class model was statistically preferred, with 1 class interpreted to be a baseline class, 1 class interpreted to be a high-BPD class, and 2 classes interpreted as intermediate classes. As a secondary goal, we examined the resulting BPD classes with respect to relevant clinical correlates, including temperamental vulnerabilities (affective instability, impulsivity, and i…

Patterns of multimorbidity and in-hospital kidney function decline in older adults: a latent class analysis of three acute-care cohorts.

Multimorbidity is associated with an increased risk of renal function decline in older individuals. In this study, we aimed to evaluate whet … chronic conditions with prevalence ≥ 5% per cohort; qualitative multimorbidity was derived through latent class analysis of disease combinations. The primary outcome was change in estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) from admission to discharge, calculated using the Berlin Initiative Study 1 (BIS1) equation. A relative decline was defined as ≥ 20% reduction fro …

Multimorbidity patterns and their associations with demographic characteristics, behavioral factors, and urban-rural residence: A latent class analysis in the Thai population.

Multimorbidity, defined as the presence of two or more chronic conditions, is a growing public health concern. Understanding disease clustering and risk profiles is crucial for prevention and planning purposes. This study analyzed data from the National Health Survey in Thailand, which included 142,753 participants. Latent class analysis investigated nine non-communicable diseases, while multinomial logistic regression explored the characteristics associated with class membership. Four distinct classes were identified: low burden, hypertension-metabolic, predominant hypertension, and high mult…

Evaluating the accuracy of a nutritional screening tool for patients with digestive system tumors: A hierarchical Bayesian latent class meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Cancer, particularly tumors of the digestive system, presents a major global health challenge. The incidence and mortality rates of these cancers are increasing, and many patients face significant nutritional risks, which are often overlooked in clinical practice. This oversight can lead to serious health consequences, underscoring the need for effective nutritional assessment tools to improve clinical outcomes. Although several nutritional risk screening tools exist, their specific utility for patients with gastrointestinal tumors remains unclear. This study aimed to address this
