[The ski accident in the last 15 years. Correlations with equipment].

In the region of Davos/Klosters an extensive epidemiological study has been performed on winter sports-accidents, especially from alpine skiing during the last 15 years. The ski-accidents have been related to the skiers activity, measured by the kilometers of altitude (vertical drop) in downhill-skiing. The injuries are still mainly located on the extremities, fractures of the lower leg have significantly decreased but serious ligamentous injuries of the knee have replaced them in high numbers. The severity of the injuries has been evaluated considering multiple factors and a decrease could be

Factors predisposing Army conscripts to knee exertion injuries incurred in a physical training program.

Factors causing predisposition to knee exertion injuries were sought by means of a questionnaire and detailed quantitative physical measurements in 62 healthy Finnish Army conscripts. The subjects consisted of two groups of 18- to 26-year-old conscripts; Group A comprised 34 subjects without knee exertion injuries and Group B, 28 subjects who experienced knee exertion injuries during the first eight weeks of military service. In Group B the extensor mechanism was the most common source of symptoms. The factors found in Group B that differed significantly from those in Group A included increase

Persistent Human Quadriceps Muscle Volume Deficits Following ACL Reconstruction Are Associated With No Detectable Between-Leg Differences in Vastus Lateralis Muscle Signaling at Rest or Immediately Following Resistance Exercise.

Quadriceps muscle deficits following anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury can persist years beyond reconstruction (ACLR), but the underlying molecular mechanisms remain largely unexplored. This study investigated whether persistent muscle deficits following ACLR are associated with defects in hypertrophic signaling pathways in response to acute resistance exercise. Twelve participants (7 females, 5 males; age 26.7 ± 4.1 years; 2.6 ± 1.5 years post-ACL injury) underwent MRI scanning and one-repetition maximum (1RM) testing to determine muscle volume and unilateral leg-press strength in the A

Unveiling the influence of hip isokinetic strength on lower extremity running kinematics in male national middle-distance runners: a correlational analysis.

BACKGROUND: The relationship between hip strength deficiency in various planes and musculoskeletal injuries within the movement system has been well-established in numerous studies. The present study sought to explore the relationships between hip strength and specific aspects of lower extremity running kinematics. METHODOLOGY: To achieve this objective, the three-dimensional running kinematics of 21 male elite middle-distance runners (mean age: 19.7 ± 1.2 years; mean experience 6.5 ± 1.0 years) were assessed using nine high-speed cameras on a treadmill at a speed of 16 km·h⁻¹. Concurrently,

A retrospective audit of long-term lower limb complications following leg vein harvesting for coronary artery bypass grafting.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the prevalence of leg complications following leg-vein harvest for coronary artery bypass grafting. METHOD: A questionnaire was sent to patients who had coronary artery bypass surgery between January 1993 and December 1998. Questions addressed pain, numbness, infection, swelling and general healing. The relationship between the risk factors of diabetes, peripheral vascular disease, previous fractures/injuries to legs, previous deep vein clots and arthritis affecting the legs with post operative symptoms of pain, numbness, swelling and general healing was explored with m

Alternatives to Traditional Cast Immobilization in Pediatric Patients.

Casts are commonly used for fracture management and postoperative immobilization in pediatric patients. However, cast immobilization is not without complications (eg, thermal injuries, pressure sores, infection, and neurovascular injury) and may be associated with additional costs and increased loss of school/work days for cast removal or other complications. The disadvantages of traditional casting can be minimized by alternative management strategies: waterproof casts to facilitate bathing and swimming; a Pavlik harness in infants, a single-leg spica cast, or flexible intramedullary nails to

Nerve grafting for lower-extremity injuries.

Nine patients were evaluated following nerve grafting of segmental injuries to the peroneal or sciatic nerve. Using a device that quantitated ankle dorsiflexion strength, the average return in strength was 11% recovery of the contralateral leg (correlating to motor grade M2). Four patients had a functional degree of motor recovery (grade M3 or M4), which corresponded to an average ankle dorsiflexion strength of 21% of the contralateral leg. The return of protective sensation occurred in all patients. Even though nerve grafts were required, repair of the peroneal and sciatic nerves provided eno

[Pediatric injuries in the lower extremities caused by insertion of the foot into the spokes of a bicycle].

The authors describe the injury of the lower extremity caused by putting the child's leg between the spokes of bicycle wheel during ride. The result is contusion of soft tissues of the leg and ankle or the fracture of the shin in a typical place. The injury requires a through treatment of soft tissues and sometimes also reduction of the fracture under total anaesthesia with subsequent fixation by plaster of Paris. On the basis of the group of 52 patients it has been proved that the mentioned injuries but for exceptional cases heal without sequelea. The authors emphasize the importance of the p

[Ulcers in congenital arteriovenous fistula of the lower extremities].

Ulcers of the lower legs caused by arteriovenous fistulae show, on one hand, that diagnoses are often made carelessly and, on the other, that the treatment initiated is often inadequate. In both cases reported, there were several small arteriovenous fistulae in the lower legs, although no symptoms were observed for a long time. The ulcers, which then recurred chronically, resulted from very minor injuries. Their characteristics remained unnoticed for many years. Surgical intervention to remove these fistulae is not always simple because they cannot all be removed at once. Lower leg ulcers caus

Injury to popliteal vessels.

Between 1969 and 1981, 61 patients with 85 popliteal vascular injuries were seen. In the nine patients who required amputation, common risk factors included (1) extensive time delays (greater than 36 hours) between injury and repair, (2) associated bone and soft-tissue injuries leading to postoperative wound infection. amd (3) early occlusion of popliteal artery repair or delay in performance of fasciotomy. The low amputation rate in patients without operative delay or associated bone and soft-tissue injuries (2/54 = 3.7%) was attributed to the careful application of standard vascular surgery

The nature and response to therapy of 196 consecutive injuries seen at a runners' clinic.

We studied a series of 196 running injuries to determine the nature of the common injuries, the type of runners with the different injuries, specific factors causing the most common injuries, and the response of these injuries to correction of the biomechanical abnormalities believed to cause them. The four commonest injuries were 'runner's knee' (peripatellar pain syndrome) (22%), 'shin splints' (posterior tibial stress syndrome) (18%), the iliotibial band friction syndrome (12%), and chronic muscle injuries (11%). Within 8 weeks of following the biomechanically based treatment regimen, betwe

The influence of gait stance on pedestrian lower limb injury risk.

The effect of pedestrian gait on lower limb kinematics and injuries has not been analyzed. The purpose of this paper was therefore to investigate the effect of pedestrian gait on kinematics and injury risk to the lower limbs using the Total Human Model for Safety adult male pedestrian model together with FE models of vehicle front structures. The modeling results indicate that the tibia and femur cortical bone von-Mises stress and the lateral knee bending angle of an adult pedestrian are strongly dependent on the gait stance when struck by both a sedan car and an SUV at 40km/h. The gait analys

Fireworks injuries, active component, U.S. Armed Forces, 2008-2017.

Although fireworks shows are considered patriotic and festive, the use of consumer fireworks also can be dangerous. There were 302 records of fireworks injuries during the 10-year surveillance period (2.4 cases per 100,000 person- years [p-yrs]). During 2008-2017, the lowest crude annual incidence of fireworks injury was reported in 2010 (1.5 per 100,000 p-yrs) and the highest was reported in 2017 (3.4 per 100,000 p-yrs). Compared with their respective counterparts, overall incidence of fireworks injury was higher among males, non-Hispanic whites, Army members, those in an enlisted rank, and t

Prospectively identified deficits in sagittal plane hip-ankle coordination in female athletes who sustain a second anterior cruciate ligament injury after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction and return to sport.

BACKGROUND: Athletes who return to sport after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction are at increased risk of future ACL injury. Altered coordination of lower extremity motion may increase this risk. The purpose of this study was to prospectively determine if altered lower extremity coordination patterns exist in athletes who go on to sustain a 2nd anterior cruciate ligament injury. METHODS: Sixty-one female athletes who were cleared to return to sport after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction were included. Hip-ankle coordination was assessed prior to return to sport with a dynamic
