Primary cervical lymphoma is rare, with less than 60 cases reported in the English literature, including a few cases of synchronous cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) with cervical lymphoma. We describe a 42-year-old woman with CIN 3 and malignant lymphoma of the cervix. The Papanicolaou cytology only revealed dysplastic cells of CIN 3, but not the malignant lymphoid cells. The histology of the cervix revealed diffuse infiltration of monotonous medium-sized lymphoid cells with dispersing tingible bodies, and a Burkitt's lymphoma in combination with a small CIN 3 lesion was diagnosed. We present a pediatric case of neurofibromatosis-1 (NF-1) complicated by acute lymphoblastic leukemia and hypereosinophilia, which caused multiple end-organ damage. Although clinical symptoms such as fever and coughing were noted only 1 week before admission, the condition deteriorated rapidly with a fatal outcome prior to antileukemic therapy. A postmortem examination demonstrated extensive endomyocardial fibrosis with thrombotic occlusion and recanalization of the coronary arteries. Leukemic cell infiltration was not seen in the cardiac tissue. When eosinophilia is diagnosed in patients with

Central diabetes insipidus (DI) can be the outcome of a number of diseases that affect the hypothalamic-neurohypophyseal axis. The causes of the condition can be classified as traumatic, inflammatory, or neoplastic. Traumatic causes include postoperative sella or transection of the pituitary stalk, while infectious or inflammatory causes include meningitis, lymphocytic hypophysitis, and granulomatous inflammations such as sarcoidosis and Wegener's granulomatosis. Various neoplastic conditions such as germinoma, Langerhans cell histiocytosis, metastasis, leukemic infiltration, lymphoma, teratom…

We describe a 14-year-old girl with T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) who developed peripheral type facial palsy alternately on each side during remission. The cerebrospinal fluid examination and imaging studies of the brain including the temporal area failed to identify the etiology. Fully 10 weeks after the onset of the facial nerve palsy, she showed cytological findings of meningeal and bone marrow relapse. Review of the literature revealed that an isolated facial nerve palsy due to leukemic cell infiltration is a rare occurrence. Nonetheless one needs to keep in mind that it may re

BACKGROUND Acute tubulointerstitial nephritis is most often induced by drug therapy and is characterized by the presence of edema, inflammatory infiltrates, and sometimes granulomas within the interstitium. We report this case to describe florid interstitial hemorrhages as a novel feature of Amoxicillin-Clavulanate-induced acute tubulointerstitial nephritis. CASE REPORT A young man presented with intermittent visible hematuria and acute kidney injury after a course of Amoxicillin-Clavulanate for upper respiratory tract illness. Renal biopsy demonstrated acute tubulointerstitial nephritis with

A 57-year-old woman was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia (AML, M5a) with MLL rearrangement in August 2006. Cord blood transplantation (CBT) conditioned with a reduced-intensity regimen was carried out during second complete remission in March 2007. Marrow study on day 28 confirmed complete chimera and disappearance of minimal residual disease by RT-PCR. She complained of left chest pain around day 120. CT scan on day 127 showed left pleural effusion, tumors of the upper mediastinum and spleen, and pericardial effusion. She suddenly died of cardiogenic shock on day 129. Postmortem examinat

Pancreatic infiltration with leukemic cells is a rare manifestation of acute lymphoblastic leukemia. There are only a few reported cases. We report the clinical and radiologic findings of a 4-year-old boy with mature B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia and pancreatic involvement. A computed tomography scan of his abdomen demonstrated diffuse hypodense lesions in the pancreas. Plasma amylase and lipase levels at that time were high, but no signs of hypoglycemia or hyperglycemia were observed. After 2 cycles of chemotherapy, the lesions in his pancreas, liver, and kidney disappeared, and his pan

A 62-year-old man with aleukemic Bence Jones type multiple myeloma who developed neurologic abnormalities is reported. After admission, consciousness disturbance appeared and a lumbar puncture obtained M-protein. Though brain CT showed no abnormal findings except a punched out lesion of the temporal bone, MRI disclosed remarkable enhancement of the dura mater. Meningeal involvement by myeloma cells without leukemic blood picture is very rare though it is common in other lymphoproliferative disorders such as acute lymphocyte leukemia and malignant lymphoma. We report a case of BJ type multiple

The results of an autopsy of an 80-year-old Japanese male with acute myeloid leukemia who died of spontaneous rupture of the spleen are reported. The patient was admitted because of anorexia, fatigue, weight loss, and multiple skin eruptions. Hematological examinations indicated a rapid increase in myeloblasts. The patient collapsed on the 28th hospital day, immediately after complaining of severe epigastralgia and vomiting. He died ten hours later. The autopsy revealed extensive leukemic infiltration of the bone marrows, spleen, lymph nodes, skin, and other internal organs. The spleen was enl…

Nine cases of lymphoblastic leukemia were observed in 4,500 guinea pigs from three guinea pig production colonies during a period of 3 years. Seven of the cases occurred in strain 2/N, one in 13/N and one in Dunkin-Hartley/FD. These guinea pigs were 5.5-29 months old and included two males and seven females. Clinically, the animals showed a variety of signs, such as enlargement of peripheral lymph nodes, posterior paralysis and terminal ataxia. Gross lesions were characterized by numerous white spots and enlargement of the lymph nodes and many internal organs. Hematologic examination showed le

A case of T-cell lymphoma, as defined by immunologic studies of lymph node, peripheral blood, and cultured cells, is presented. Convoluted lymphocytes were noted in the original lymph node biopsy, in cerebral spinal fluid preparations and terminally, in the peripheral blood. The prominent neuologic abnormalities representing both central and peripheral nervous system involvement were atypical. Other features included skin and testicular infiltration, leukemic transformation, and refractoriness to therapy. A somewhat similar clinical picture has been reported in other patients with diffuse, poo

Splenosis refers to ectopic splenic implants that are often found incidentally years after splenic rupture/splenectomy, and the nodules of splenosis are usually small, less than 3 cm for the majority. We report a case of splenosis with a 5-centimeter large mass in the anterior abdomen in a 79 year-old male with a remote history of splenic rupture/splenectomy. Unexpectedly, needle core biopsy of the abdominal mass demonstrated splenic tissue with a mononucleated cell infiltrate blurring the splenic architecture that was highlighted only by CD8 stain. This finding prompted a bone marrow examinat

BACKGROUND: Acquired multifocal white retinal lesions in an immunosuppressed patient are diagnostically challenging.
METHODS: Case report of a 34-year-old woman who underwent bone marrow transplantation for chronic myelogenous leukemia. Four months after the transplant, while on relatively high doses of immunosuppressive drugs, she developed bilateral multifocal retinitis versus leukemic retinal infiltration. Fine-needle aspiration biopsy was performed on one eye in an attempt to establish a cytological diagnosis.
RESULTS: The aspirate was found to contain individual crescent-shaped intraret

Sézary syndrome has been described as the leukemic form of cutaneous T-cell lymphoma, defined by the presence of CD4(+) T-cells with cerebriform nuclei in the peripheral blood, erythroderma and lymphadenopathy with occasional involvement to lymph nodes, and visceral organs according to course. We report a 48-year-old woman with Sézary syndrome. Most of peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) showed CD4(+), CD7(+) surface marker while infiltrating cells to the skin consisted of the same percentage of CD4/CD8 cells. CD4(+) cells predominantly expressed IL-8 both in PBMC and the skin, and gener

In mycosis fungoides the malignant T cells express lymphocyte function-associated antigen-1, which allows them to bind to epidermal keratinocytes expressing the gamma interferon-inducible intercellular adhesion molecule-1. In this report, a patient with leukemic-stage mycosis fungoides (Sézary syndrome) had widespread erythematous dermal infiltrates containing malignant T cells, but without any epidermotropism. We discovered that the T cells expressed normal amounts of functional lymphocyte function-associated antigen-1, but the keratinocytes did not express significant levels of intercellular

Selective BCL2 inhibitor ABT-199 has been approved to treat hematological malignancies including acute myeloid leukemia (AML). However, acquired drug resistance and severe side effects occur after extended treatment limiting the clinical usage of ABT-199. Here, we successfully encapsulated pure ABT-199 in amphiphilic mPEG-b-PTMC169 block copolymer, forming mPEG-b-PTMC169@ABT-199 nanoparticles (abbreviated as PEG-ABT-199), which presented better aqueous dispersion and higher efficiency of loading and encapsulation than pure ABT-199. We then compared the anti-leukemic ability of pure ABT-199 and

BACKGROUND Most patients with chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) are asymptomatic at diagnosis, but 10% present with B symptoms. Most patients have palpable lymphadenopathy, while 20-50% of the patients have hepatosplenomegaly. Cutaneous infiltrations in patients with CLL can be localized or generalized in the form of erythematous papules, plaques, nodules and, ulceration, which is uncommon. CASE REPORT We present the case of a 71-year-old man diagnosed with chronic lymphocytic leukemia/small lymphocytic lymphoma (CLL/SLL) with atypical immunophenotype and increased prolymphocytes (CLL/PLL), w

The authors report an unusual presentation of a leptomeningeal lymphoblastic lymphoma in a 6-year-old boy with headache and papilledema as the only initial manifestations. The diagnosis was confirmed by the presence of precursor B-cell lymphoblasts in the cerebrospinal fluid, with no cerebral mass and with only 9% phenotypically identical blasts in the bone marrow. This patient was treated on a high-risk ALL protocol with intensive systemic/intrathecal chemotherapy plus cranial irradiation, and he remained in complete remission 6 months after his initial diagnosis.

Lymphomas and leukemias account for a large portion of orbital tumors. Orbital lymphoma accounts for 55% of malignant orbital tumors in adults. Idiopathic orbital inflammatory pseudotumors are pathologic entities that often challenge ophthalmologists and radiologists. This article describes the MR and CT features of orbital lymphoma, leukemia, and some other lymphoproliferative disorders.
