Role of obesity on cerebral hemodynamics and cardiorespiratory responses in healthy men during repetitive incremental lifting.

PURPOSE: The goal of this study was to quantify obesity-related differences in systemic physiologic responses and cerebral hemodynamics during physical work to exhaustion. METHODS: Twenty men, ten who are obese and ten of healthy weight, completed an incremental exercise lifting a box from 25 cm below to 25 cm above knuckle height at 10 lifts/min. The lifting started with a load of 5 kg and was increased by 2 kg every 2 min until participants reached either voluntary fatigue or two of the American College of Sports Medicine endpoints for maximum aerobic capacity. Cardiorespiratory and prefron…

Lifting the 'violence veil': examining working conditions in long-term care facilities using iterative mixed methods.

We conducted a mixed-methods study-- the focus of this article--to understand how workers in long-term care facilities experienced working conditions. We surveyed unionized care workers in Ontario (n = 917); we also surveyed workers in three Canadian provinces (n = 948) and four Scandinavian countries (n = 1,625). In post-survey focus groups, we presented respondents with survey questions and descriptive statistical findings, and asked them: "Does this reflect your experience?" Workers reported time pressures and the frequency of experiences of physical violence and unwanted sexual attention,

A study of intragastric and intravesicular pressure changes during rest, coughing, weight lifting, retching, and vomiting.

BACKGROUND: In patients undergoing a variety of procedures, surgical success is in part dependent on maintaining normal intra-abdominal pres … d the catheters were then transduced continuously. Pressures were recorded with activity: coughing, lifting weights, retching (dry heaving), and vomiting. RESULTS: All pressure changes were significant from baseline except for weight lifting. The highest intragastric pressure was 290 mmHg, seen during vomiting. Comparison of intragastric and intravesicul …

Work-related movement and lumbar spine direction: a systematic review of lifting, posture, and pain risk.

Low back pain (LBP) is a prevalent musculoskeletal condition of occupational and socioeconomic importance. The main biomechanical exposures related to LBP among workers include repetitive lifting, non-neutral trunk postures, and long-duration static trunk positions. This systematic review aimed to evaluate the role of lumbar spine movement direction during work-related lifting and posture in relation to spinal loading and the risk of LBP. PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science were searched for articles published in January 2015 - June 2025. Eligible studies included adult workers performing occup…

Trauma-informed weight lifting as an adjunctive intervention for posttraumatic stress among youth in residential treatment.

OBJECTIVE: Youth in residential treatment are likely to have a history of complex trauma, which is linked to disruptions in interoception. Conventional talk psychotherapy may not address disruptions in interoception as keenly as movement-based interventions. Therefore, the present pilot study explored the feasibility, acceptability, and preliminary efficacy of an adjunctive movement-based intervention, trauma-informed weight lifting (TIWL). METHOD: Following a nonrandomized, quasiexperimental design, adolescents and young adults (N = 12) from two residential facilities received 8 weeks of TIW…

Extended Endarterectomy Across the Inguinal Ligament Using Inguinal-Lifting in the Surgery for Critical Limb Ischemia.

This case report presents a case of lower extremity peripheral arterial disease (PAD) with severe calcified lesions extending from the external iliac artery to the bifurcation of the superficial femoral artery, involving the groin region. Owing to the complexity and risk of complications, such as infections and delayed wound healing, revascularization was performed with extensive endarterectomy. The inguinal-lifting technique (ILT) was used to provide safe surgical access and minimize complications. The procedure resulted in successful revascularization with no major wound-related issues. The …

NX-1607: lifting the Cbl-b brake to promote T cell activation through MAPK/ERK pathways.

Casitas B lymphoma-b (Cbl-b) is an E3 ubiquitin ligase that serves as a critical brake on immune cell activations. It negatively fine-tunes immune responses through ubiquitination of signaling proteins. Cbl-b deficiency in mice leads to spontaneous tumor rejection and induces only mild, non-lethal autoimmunity, highlighting its potential as a promising immunotherapy target. NX-1607 is the first oral small molecule inhibitor of Cbl-b and it is currently in phase I clinical trial. A recent publication employed high-throughput drug combination screening to systematically elucidate the molecular p
