Effects of personalized oral exercises on swallowing function among patients with oral cancer after free flap transplantation: a cluster randomized controlled trial.

Dysphagia is a common complication in patients with oral cancer who have undergone free flap transplantation. The aim of this cluster randomized controlled trial was to evaluate the effect of personalized oral exercises on swallowing function in this group of patients. Eligible patients were randomly assigned to the intervention (n = 34) or control (n = 34) group. Intervention group patients received personalized oral exercises starting on day 6 after surgery. Swallowing function was evaluated on days 6 and 15, and at 1 month postoperative using the Mann Assessment of Swallowing Ability-Oral C

Squamous cell carcinoma of the lip developing in discoid lupus erythematosus.

Since the substitution of steroids and antimalarials for irradiation in the treatment of discoid lupus erythematosus, squamous cell carcinoma arising in discoid lupus erythematosus is thought by some to be an uncommon occurrence. A review of the recent literature (subsequent to 1945) revealed fifteen cases, of which seven occurred in the lips. In one of twelve of the cases a history of irradiation was documented. In three other cases, there was no evidence of its use. We report an additional case of squamous cell carcinoma occurring in the lower lip of a 24-year-old black woman in the absence

Opioid Abuse and Dependence in Those Hospitalized Due to Head and Neck Cancer.

PURPOSE: In the United States, 2.1 million people develop substance abuse disorders that are associated with prescribed opioids. The objective of the present study was to identify the factors associated with opioid abuse and dependence (OAD) in those hospitalized for head and neck cancer (HNC). Although measures are being implementing to reduce opioid prescribing, the use of these drugs in individuals with HNC can be valuable. However, little is known about OAD among this cohort of individuals. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The present study was a retrospective analysis of the Nationwide Inpatient S

A Rare Presentation of Congenital Melanocytic Nevus on the Tongue and Lower Lip Mucosa.

Congenital melanocytic nevi (CMN) are rare lesions with significant diagnostic challenges, particularly when they occur in atypical locations such as oral mucosa. This study is the first in India to document a case of CMN involving both the tongue and lower lip mucosa, highlighting the need to understand these uncommon manifestations for accurate diagnosis and effective management, given their potential risk of malignant transformation. A 36-year-old male with asymptomatic pigmented lesions on the dorsal tongue and lower lip mucosa underwent detailed clinical and dermoscopic evaluation using a

Scalp Composite Tissue Transplantation for Repairing Upper Lip Defect: A Feasible Clinical Study.

BACKGROUND: The repair of upper lip defects is difficult and can result in asymmetry. The authors have developed a postauricular scalp composite tissue for the repair of upper lip defects. Herein, the authors, present the feasibility of scalp composite tissue grafts for repairing of upper lip defects. METHODS: The authors conducted a retrospective study of 10 patients who underwent scalp composite tissue transplantation for upper lip repair. The surgical procedure consisted of the excision of skin lesions or scar tissue from the upper lip to prepare the recipient area, and then the scalp comp

Functional and Aesthetic Lower Lip Reconstruction With Depressor Anguli Oris Muscle Flap and Reverse Superior Labial Artery Flap.

BACKGROUND: The lower lip is an important anatomical structure involved in daily activities such as eating, drinking, and speaking, as well as in facial expressions. Lower lip defects should be repaired to preserve lip function without disrupting the aesthetic harmony of the lips within the face. This goal is difficult for plastic surgeons because, for functional and aesthetic repair, it is necessary to replace the mucosa, muscle (especially contractile), and skin tissues present in the lip. METHODS: Subtotal lower lip repair was performed using an innervated depressor anguli oris muscle flap

Ingenol mebutate gel treatment for actinic cheilitis: report of four cases.

Actinic cheilitis (AC) are premalignant lesions that have an increased risk of malignant transformation. Their treatment, therefore, is essential to prevent carcinogenesis. However, optimal therapy is not well established and different modalities yield variable results. Ingenol mebutate gel has recently been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration for topical treatment of actinic keratosis, with high clearance rates. On the basis of these findings, we report our experience with this drug for the treatment of AC.

Mimicking lip features in free-flap reconstruction of lip defects.

This paper introduces a technique of lip reconstruction using free flaps in which recognisable landmarks are mimicked by strategic placement of flap junctions. The technique was applied in 15 patients undergoing reconstruction of combined cheek and lip defects using single (n= 9) or double (n= 6) free flaps. Attention to flap design and strategic placement of flap junctions successfully created the vermilion-cutaneous junction, oral commissure and labiomental groove. The presence of these distinguishing features improved the appearance of the reconstructed lip.

Solitary Neurofibroma in Lower Lip - A Case Report.

The WHO Classification of Head and Neck Tumors (2024) defines solitary neurofibromas as benign peripheral nerve sheath tumors comprising a mixture of Schwann cells, perineuronal cells, fibroblasts, and axons. In the orofacial region, such tumors usually occur on the tongue, and only rarely in the lip. This report describes a case of a solitary neurofibroma arising in the lower lip. The patient was a 59-year-old man who was referred to our hospital with a mass on the lower lip. Palpation revealed that it was elastic, hard, painless, and mobile. Magnetic resonance imaging confirmed the presence

Dermoscopic features of lip squamous cell carcinoma and actinic cheilitis: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Lip squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) accounts for approximately 30% of oral malignancies. Delayed diagnosis worsens the prognosis, leading to tumor growth, regional lymph node involvement, distant metastasis, and the need for invasive therapy. Dermoscopy is a practical, low-cost, and non-invasive diagnostic tool used to detect skin tumors. This review analyzed the common dermoscopic features of lip SCC and actinic cheilitis (AC). A search of MEDLINE, EMBASE, and Web of Science was made for original dermatoscopy studies. Pooled proportions were calculated using a random-effects model (95% CI). Ele

Custom-made radiotherapy prosthesis for external and internal radiotherapy in a patient with lip cancer.

Definitive radiotherapy is an effective treatment for early-stage lip cancer. The goal of radiotherapy is to irradiate the cancer site effectively while protecting healthy surrounding tissue from the adverse effects of radiation. To this end, radiotherapy prostheses have been widely and effectively used. A maxillofacial prosthodontist working in collaboration with a radiation oncologist can create a custom-made radiotherapy prosthesis that minimizes adverse effects. This report demonstrates the successful use of spacers in external beam radiotherapy and brachytherapy in consideration of the pa
