Food safety management in rural communities remains challenging because of fragmented governance, informal food systems, and limited stakeholder integration. This study aimed to develop and conduct the early implementation of a Community-Oriented Approach to Food Safety Management (COAFM) in a rural community in northern Thailand. A mixed-method implementation research design was conducted in Wiang Kaen District, Chiang Rai Province, Thailand, integrating community context analysis, food hazard assessment, participatory co-design, and early implementation within an Input-Process-Output framewo

BACKGROUND: Health workers have traditionally delivered health promotion and education to rural communities in the Global South in paper leaflet formats or orally. With the rise of digital technologies, health promotion and education can be provided in innovative and more effective formats, which are believed to have a higher impact on disease prevention and treatment.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this tutorial is to illustrate how a multi- and interdisciplinary approach can be applied in the design process of digital health messages for use in the Global South.
METHODS: The multi- and interdiscipl

Visionary philanthropy and governments worked with scientists to develop theoretical and computational neuroscience, through establishing centers with "local critical mass," training "outsiders," and fostering theory-experiment collaborations. This NeuroView traces how those bets shaped the field, helping launch AI and computational psychiatry.

Sickle cell disease (SCD) is a worldwide genetic blood disorder. Roughly 400,000 babies are born with SCD each year worldwide. More than 75% of these births occur in sub-Saharan Africa. The establishment of sustainable newborn screening NBS programs is an excellent approach to improving the health of persons living with SCD. The need to set up such programs in Africa cannot be overemphasized. However, initial implementation does not guarantee sustainability. More than 500 children with sickle cell anaemia (SCA) die every day due to lack of access to early diagnosis and related treatment. We sy

BACKGROUND: Sickle cell anemia (SCA) is the most common inherited genetic red blood cell disorder, highly prevalent in the tribal population residing in the Central India. The affected populace are disadvantaged due to a lack of accessibility and unavailability of transportation, flawed communication systems, insufficiency of health professionals, and basic health infrastructure.
OBJECTIVE: The objective was to set up a yoga-based lifestyle intervention (YBLI) center that is sustainable, accessible, affordable, and acceptable as the part of the Integrated Sickle Cell Anemia Research Program (

BACKGROUND: CAR is one of the poorest countries in the world. While UN statistics suggest that there is no health emergency in the country, two recently published mortality surveys contradict this. Moreover, recent accusations of massive scale human rights abuses by mercenaries suggested the need for a nationwide mortality survey.
METHODS: Two stage cluster surveys were conducted in two different strata: one in the roughly half of the country within the Government's control, and one in the areas mostly outside of the Government's control. We randomly selected 40 clusters of 10 households in e

People-centred mental healthcare is an influential concept for health system strengthening and sustainable development that has been developed and promoted primarily in Western contexts. It characterizes service users, families and communities as active participants in health system development. However, we have limited understanding of how well people-centred mental healthcare aligns with the multiplicity of peoples, cultures, languages and contexts in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Timor-Leste, a lower-middle income country in South-East Asia, is in the process of strengthening it

INTRODUCTION In 19th century colonial Cuba, Boards of Health (Juntas de Sanidad) were created to administer public health, in tandem with and later replacing the older Royal Protomedicato Court (Real Tribunal de Protomedicato). Development of the Board of Health in the northeastern city of Holguín reflected local historical processes, as well as class relations and social issues characteristic of this period. Among the highlights of the Board's activities were epidemic control during cholera and smallpox outbreaks, monitoring the city's sanitary conditions, and support for charitable work. Stu

An increasing number of dog bite victims were being presented to public hospitals in Himachal Pradesh in 2014 amidst virtual non availability of any rabies immunoglobulin (RIG). Only a small quantity of equine rabies immunoglobulin (eRIG) was available from the government owned Central Research Institute (CRI) Kasauli. This available eRIG was used in 269 patients as an emergency response and only for local infiltration of severe bite wounds by suspected rabid dogs. This was followed by rabies vaccination, using the WHO approved intra-dermal Thai Red Cross Society vaccination schedule. A subgro

An epidemiological study of 1,136 inhabitants from two rural communities in Owan East local government area of Edo State, Nigeria was investigated to ascertain the prevalence, intensities and urinary symptoms in Schistosoma haematobium infections. In both communities, 371 (32.6%) of the villagers screened, excreted S. haematobium with a mean of 40.1 ova per 10 ml of their urine. The pattern of infection was highest among the school children, moderate among the farmers and least among the civil servants. In the mid-19th century, most American addicts were genteel women hooked on opiates through medical treatment. Within a few decades, a new group of addicts emerged--pleasure users who patronized opium dens. As local laws closed dens, the pleasure users--most often poor young men in northern cities--began experimenting with cocaine and heroin, causing an alarmed government to launch an escalating campaign to root out the new deviant subculture. Various treatment efforts were instituted, from short-lived clinics to federal narcotics farms. This drug use epidemic peaked in the 1920s and was essen

This paper describes the characteristics of the 450 residents of all statutory residential homes for the elderly within five local government districts in Northern Ireland. The residents are described in terms of demographic detail, prevalence of dementia and prevalence of problem behaviour. Results are comparable with those of other studies. There are more females, fewer are married and more are over the age of 75 years than would be predicted from the general population. Roughly half scored within the dementia range, with 56% of those over 85 years being demented. More than 33% had some degr…

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This article describes the debates in Japan regarding the 100 mSv threshold assumption and ethical issues related to it, and explores the background to distorted risk information and absence of risk communication in Japan. Then we seek proper risk communication based on scientific evidence.
RECENT FINDINGS: On March 11, 2011 an accident occurred at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant due to the Great East Japan Earthquake. Since then a number of misunderstandings have become common in Japan as a result of public statements by the Japanese and local governments that ha…

Every locale in the United States is covered by a public health entity, generally known as the local health department, which is an arm of local, state, and federal governments, and is designed to protect, promote, and preserve the health of the population. To meet these responsibilities, health departments often become providers of personal health-care services, including prenatal care. The common assumption that these publicly funded prenatal services are in some way inferior to privately secured care is unfounded. Not only do local health department clinics provide quality care, they also e

BACKGROUND: Climate change poses growing risks to urban health systems, particularly in rapidly growing cities in low- and middle-income countries. Although strengthening climate resilience has become a global priority, evidence remains limited on how governance processes support adaptation within urban health systems. This study explored stakeholder perspectives on adaptive governance for climate change within Dar es Salaam's urban health system in Tanzania.
METHODS: An exploratory qualitative study was conducted in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, between October and November 2025. Data were collec
