BACKGROUND: Suicide in older people is increasing. We know less about serious deliberate self-harm in this population or the impact of this on Major Trauma Centres (MTC).
OBJECTIVES: Investigate demographics, injury mechanism and outcomes in older people admitted with self-inflicted injury.

I wish to thank the Semon Committee for inviting me to deliver the 2020 Semon lecture. This is a very special honour, as is evidenced by the list of distinguished lecturers dating back to the inaugural lecture delivered at University College London in 1913. I am not the first South African to deliver the Semon lecture, having been preceded by my previous chairman Sean Sellars in 1993, and by Jack Gluckman in 2001, who was South African raised and educated and who subsequently became the chairman of otolaryngology in Cincinnati, USA.

PURPOSE: In previous studies of fungal keratitis (FK) from temperate countries, yeasts were the predominant isolates, with ocular surface disease (OSD) being the leading risk factor. Since the 2005-2006 outbreak of contact lens (CL)-associated Fusarium keratitis, there may have been a rise in CL-associated filamentary FK in the United Kingdom. This retrospective case series investigated the patterns of FK from 2007 to 2014. We compared these to 1994-2006 data from the same hospital.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most common cause of dementia in humans. A pathological hallmark in the brain of an AD patient is extracellular amyloid plaques formed by accumulated beta-amyloid protein (Abeta), a metabolic product of amyloid precursor protein (APP). Studies have revealed a strong genetic linkage in the early-onset familial form (<60 years old) of AD. In 1789, at a meeting of a small London society for the promotion of medical and surgical knowledge, Andrew Marshal (1742-1813) and John Hunter (1728-1793) engaged in heated debate regarding the association between mania and the structure of the brain. Marshal claimed to have observed abnormalities when dissecting brains of those who died insane and Hunter denied this connection. The outcome of the first 1000 medical examinations undertaken by London Transport Medical Service (LTMS) to comply with the regulations for non-passenger carrying public carriage vehicle licence holders was analysed to assess where the primary role of the examining doctor affected the final outcome. The relationship between daily deaths and daily concentrations of Smoke and SO2 in London, England for 14 winters during the years 1958-1959 through 1971-1972 has been explored. The outcome of 502 cadaver kidney transplants has been followed for up to six years; these grafts were arranged through the Tissue Immunology Unit of the London Hospital Medical College, the coordinating centre of the London Transplant Group.
