Effects of photobiomodulation therapy on orthodontically induced inflammatory root resorption: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Orthodontically induced inflammatory root resorption (OIIRR) is a common complication of orthodontic treatment that may compromise tooth health and treatment outcomes. Photobiomodulation (PBM) therapy has emerged as a potential modality to mitigate against OIIRR. However, clinical studies have shown inconsistent efficacy and there is a lack of consensus on functional parameters, underscoring the need for evidence-based reviews. METHODS: Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) investigating PBM for OIIRR mitigation with quantitative root resorption assessment were included in the rev

[Low-level laser therapy for the treatment of male infertility and erectile dysfunction].

Low-level laser therapy (LLLT), a noninvasive photobiomodulation technique, employs red or near-infrared (NIR) light (600-1 000 nm) with power outputs ranging from 5 to 500 mW. It exerts therapeutic effects through molecular mechanisms, specifically the activation of cytochrome C oxidase (CCO) and the modulation of intracellular signaling pathways. By enhancing mitochondrial adenosine triphosphate (ATP) synthesis, LLLT mitigates oxidative stress, regulates the reactive oxygen species (ROS)/glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px)/superoxide dismutase (SOD) axis, and activates key pathways, including ph

The role of microtrauma in hair regrowth and regeneration in non-scarring alopecia.

Hair loss in both men and women significantly impact quality of life and often has modest treatment outcomes. Recently, microtrauma, which involves small, intentional skin injuries, has emerged as a promising method to stimulate hair growth through immunomodulation in non-scarring alopecias. This review explores the pathogenesis of hair loss, the mechanisms behind microtrauma, various methods of inducing it, and their efficacy in treating non-scarring alopecia. Hair follicles undergo cyclic phases of growth, regression, and rest, influenced by microenvironmental factors, including immune cells

Photobiomodulation Therapy: A Novel Therapeutic Approach to Alzheimer's Disease Made Possible by the Evidence of a Brain-Gut Interconnection.

The evidence of brain-gut interconnections in Alzheimer's disease (AD) opens novel avenues for the treatment of a pathology for which no definitive treatment exists. Gut microbiota and bacterial translocation may produce peripheral inflammation and immune modulation, contributing to brain amyloidosis, neurodegeneration, and cognitive deficits in AD. The gut microbiota can be used as a potential therapeutic target in AD. In particular, photobiomodulation (PBM) can affect the interaction between the microbiota and the immune system, providing a potential explanation for its restorative propertie

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a disabling neuropsychiatric disorder that affects about 2%-3% of the global population. Despite the availability of several treatments, many patients with OCD do not respond adequately, highlighting the need for new therapeutic approaches. Recent studies have associated various inflammatory processes with the pathogenesis of OCD, including alterations in peripheral immune cells, alterations in cytokine levels, and neuroinflammation. These findings suggest that inflammation could be a promising target for intervention. Transcranial photobiomodulation (t-P

Application of a physiotherapeutic protocol associated with photobiomodulation for the treatment of leprosy patients.

Leprosy is a chronic infectious disease characterized by acute inflammatory episodes that affect the skin and peripheral nerves and can develop progressive and irreversible disabilities and deformities. In addition, drug therapy and physiotherapy offer resources and techniques capable of mitigating the consequences of neural lesions, but neural lesions can occur before, during, and even after drug treatment. Thus, new treatments are needed. Photobiomodulation (PBM) might be a promissor therapy since it aims to reduce the inflammatory process and restore motor and sensory functions in the affec
