Detailed knowledge of the lymphatic drainage of the breast is limited. Lymphoscintigraphy is a technique used during breast cancer treatment to accurately map patterns of lymphatic drainage from the primary tumour to the draining lymph nodes. This study aimed to create a statistical model to analyse the spread of breast cancer and primary tumour location using a large lymphoscintigraphy database, and visualise the results with a novel computational model. This study was based on lymphoscintigraphy data from 2,304 breast cancer patients treated at the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital Medical Centre

BACKGROUND: The most common route of breast cancer metastasis is through the mammary lymphatic network. An accurate assessment of the axillary lymph node (ALN) burden before surgery can avoid unnecessary axillary surgery, consequently preventing surgical complications. In this study, we aimed to develop a non-invasive prediction model incorporating breast specific gamma image (BSGI) features and ultrasonographic parameters to assess axillary lymph node status.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Cohorts of breast cancer patients who underwent surgery between 2012 and 2021 were created (The training set in

Cancer remains the second leading cause of death worldwide. Tumor invasion and metastasis pose significant challenges for clinical management. In addition to the traditional pathways of metastasis such as hematologic or lymphatic transmission, perineural invasion (PNI) has become a unique mechanism of metastasis, which is closely associated with neuropathic pain, motor deficits, and poor prognosis. PNI is often observed in malignant tumors of the pancreas, head and neck, gastrointestinal tract, and lungs, and it reflects a unique neurotropic transfer behavior utilizing neural networks. Despite

BACKGROUND: Renal cell carcinomas (RCCs) have a propensity for widespread metastases and a wide range of survival rates. They can spread into adjacent organs by direct extension and can invade local or distant sites by lymphatic, hematogenous or lympho-hematogeneous pathways. Scar site metastasis is very rare.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report a rare case of scar site RCC metastasis in a patient who underwent left radical nephrectomy 10 months ago.
CONCLUSION: FNAC is a simple and easy technique that can help in the definitive diagnosis of subcutaneous lesions. A correct early stage diagnosis of

Pulmonary metastases are usually seen as parenchymal nodules, lymphatic-interstitial spread and pleural effusion, however cavitary and cystic metastatic lesions are rare. While breast cancer, gastrointestinal tumors, kidney tumors, malignant melanoma, sarcomas, lymphoma and leukemia mostly metastasize to the lung, endometrial adenocarcinoma rarely metastasizes. A 73-year-old woman with multiple cystic-cavitary lung lesions was referred to our clinic because of chronic cough. She had endometrial adenocarcinoma metastasis to the lung. We wanted to present our case because of the rare occurrence

Ovarian cancer is a common tumor among women. It is often asymptomatic in the early stages, with most cases already at stage III to IVE at the time of diagnosis. Direct spread and lymphatic metastasis are the primary modes of metastasis, whereas hematogenous spread is rare. An initial diagnosis of ovarian cancer that has metastasized to the stomach is also uncommon. Therefore, clear treatment methods and prognostic data for such metastasis are lacking. In our hospital, we encountered a patient with an initial imaging diagnosis of a gastric tumor and a history of an ovarian tumor with endoscopi…

Malignancies of the auricular skin tend to metastasise to preauricular, parotid, facial, and level II (possibly to levels IV and V) lymph nodes in an unpredictable manner. Over the years, we have observed that this pattern of metastasis is commonly linked to lesions that involve the lower half of the ear. To find conclusive evidence based on this hypothetical observation, we retrospectively studied 108 patients who presented with squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the ear, and looked at the exact auricular site of the lesion at presentation, incidence of metastasis, nodal involvement, treatment,

Although regional control of the axilla in patients with breast cancer is important, axillary lymph node dissection (ALND) is performed mainly for staging purposes. The sentinel lymph node (SLN) that first receives lymphatic drainage from the tumor was investigated. After SLN identification, ALND or radiation therapy is performed in patients with SLN metastasis who are also likely to have non-SLN metastasis. However, it is important to select patients with SLN metastasis who may benefit from further axillary treatment. The size of the primary tumor and the size of its SLN metastasis are report

STUDY DESIGN: This is a report of a man with carcinoma of the anus and intradural metastasis to the cauda equina.
OBJECTIVE: To perform a laminectomy with tumor removal for relief of pain.
SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Only 25 cases of intradural spinal metastasis have been reported in the English literature. This is the first report of a metastatic case, moving from the carcinoma of the anus to the cauda equina.
METHODS: Magnetic resonance imaging showed an ill-defined mass, with central necrosis, to the cauda equina. The possibility of intradural metastasis to the cauda equina was indicated

Lymphatic invasion (LI) identified by immunohistochemical (IHC) staining is common in primary cutaneous melanoma, and LI has been shown to be an independent prognostic factor in melanoma. Its prognostic significance in melanocytic tumors of uncertain malignant potential (MELTUMPs) has not been well characterized. This study included 32 patients with provisional diagnoses of MELTUMP. Lesions were evaluated for tumor thickness, the presence of ulceration, mitotic figures, mitotic figures at the base, tumor infiltrating lymphocytes, as well as peritumoral and intratumoral lymphatic density. Primary gastrointestinal cancer frequently spreads to the mesentery, omentum and other parts of the peritoneum, and these deposits are generally considered to be induced by intraperitoneal seeding from the primary lesion. However, a few peritoneal metastatic cases or cases with positive intraperitoneal lavage cytology, without serosal infiltration, have been reported. Most of peritoneal dissemination is certainly attended with serosal involvement of gastrointestinal malignancy. Nevertheless, we observe an unusual case of peritoneal dissemination without definite serosal invasion of the maligna

BACKGROUND: The internal mammary artery and vein is often used as a site of anastomoses in microvascular breast reconstruction. This area supports lymphatic drainage of the breast and its role in breast cancer metastasis remains unclear. We hypothesize that sampling of internal mammary lymph nodes at the time of microvascular anastomoses preparation may identify persistent or recurrent local disease and mandate the need for additional treatment in this area.
MATERIAL/METHODS: A retrospective chart review from 519 patients in the time between January 2006 and September 2009 was performed on al

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Recently, early gastric cancers without lymph node metastasis have successfully been removed through a simple endoscopic resection. Tumor cell proliferation may be related to the malignant potential of early gastric cancer. The purpose of this study is to prospectively investigate the relationship between the incorporation rate of bromodeoxyuridine (BrdU) into the DNA of dividing cells, and the main biological and clinical early gastric cancer characteristics.
METHODOLOGY: Multiple tumor specimens were taken from 27 early gastric cancers and analyzed through anti-BrdU monoclo

PURPOSE: To explore the relationship between morphological characteristics and histologic localization of metastasis within sentinel lymph nodes (SLN) and axillary spread in women with breast cancer.
METHODS: We selected 119 patients with positive SLN submitted to complete axillary lymph node dissection from July 2002 to March 2007. We retrieved the age of patients and the primary tumor size. In the primary tumor, we evaluated histologic and nuclear grade, and peritumoral vascular invasion (PVI). In SLNs we evaluated the size of metastasis, their localization in the lymph node, number of foci

BACKGROUND: Pericardial and pleural cavities produce effusions with important clinical consequences. Metastases are one of the most common etiologies of both serosal effusions. However, data regarding the type of metastatic involvement of the pleura and the pericardium are lacking. This study investigated the histologic patterns of tumors involving the two cavities to better define their pathophysiology and possible consequences in molecular diagnostics.
METHODS: This was a retrospective study of patients diagnosed with pericardial (n = 75) and pleural (n = 70) metastases. Patterns of metasta

BACKGROUND: Parotid gland metastasis in breast cancer is extremely rare, and only 14 cases have been reported between 1982 and 2010. CASE REPORT: A 67-year-old female patient was diagnosed with invasive lobular carcinoma of the left breast. Although clinical staging was T1N3M1 (stage IV), the tumor experienced a complete response to chemotherapy. We therefore performed a mastectomy followed by radiotherapy, and continued administration of trastuzumab. However, 11 months later, the patient complained of a swelling in the left parotid gland. Histology following a partial parotidectomy revealed a

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Visceral pleural invasion is an upstaging factor that increases cancer staging from stage IA to IB for tumours of 3 cm or less. However, lymphatic invasion has not been associated with the tumour-node-metastasis (TNM) staging system. The purpose of this study was to compare visceral pleural invasion and lymphatic invasion as prognostic factors.
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 353 consecutive patients who underwent curative resection for stage I non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) tumours of 3 cm or less. Patients were divided into three groups and compared. Group

Cancer metastasis to appendix vermiformis is rare. We here report a case of appendiceal metastasis of gastric cancer, which was incidentally discovered in the appendix resected as acute appendicitis. A 65-year-old man, who had undergone distal gastrectomy for poorly differentiated adenocarcinoma 2 years before, complained of lower abdominal pain. Physical examination and laboratory tests clinically suggested acute appendicitis. Macroscopically, the serosal surface of the resected appendix was hyperaemic and white-coated. These findings were compatible with the clinical diagnosis. However, hist

Given its unusual lymphatic drainage system, the tonsil is a rare site of metastasis, with few reports in the human and veterinary literature. Prognosis in cases of tonsillar metastasis is reportedly poor. We describe here a unique case of urinary bladder urothelial carcinoma (UC) with metastasis to the tonsil in an 11-y-old, spayed female, mixed-breed dog. At presentation, the patient had a history of a growing neck mass and increasing lethargy, hyporexia, weight loss, drooling, and diarrhea for 2 wk. A carcinoma was diagnosed by cytology. Given the poor prognosis, the patient was euthanized.
