Systematic Literature Review and Meta-Analysis of Sacral Neuromodulation (SNM) in Patients with Neurogenic Lower Urinary Tract Dysfunction (nLUTD): Over 20 Years' Experience and Future Directions.

INTRODUCTION: Sacral neuromodulation (SNM) has been used in carefully selected patients with neurogenic lower urinary tract dysfunctions (nLUTD) for over two decades. METHODS: The aim of the current work was to perform a systematic literature review and meta-analysis of studies reporting the safety and effectiveness of SNM in patients with nLUTD (neurogenic detrusor overactivity, non-obstructive urinary retention, or a combination of both). For this purpose a systematic literature research was conducted using Embase (OvidSP), MEDLINE (OvidSP), MEDLINE In-Process Citations & Daily Update (Ovid…

BET 1: Intravenous tranexamic acid in the treatment of acute epistaxis.

A short-cut review was carried out to establish whether intravenous tranexamic acid is beneficial in managing acute epistaxis. Seven papers were found in Medline, Embase and the Cochrane Library using the reported searches, but none presented any evidence to answer the clinical question. It is concluded that there is no evidence to support or refute the use of intravenous tranexamic acid in acute epistaxis and that local advice should be followed.

Parinaud'S oculoglandular syndrome associated with paracoccidioidomycosis.

The authors report one case of Parinaud's oculoglandular syndrome associated with Paracoccidioides brasiliensis infection. No other medical report of this condition was found in the medical literature available at Index Medicus and Medline. The eye involvement has been rather uncommon in paracoccidioidomycosis and this report emphasizes the possibility of this kind of presentation making it also necessary to include paracoccidioidomycosis among the several known causes of Parinaud's oculoglandular syndrome.

Cannabinoids in the Treatment of Chemotherapy-Induced Peripheral Neuropathy: A Systematic Review of Randomized Controlled Trials.

Chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN) is a common and debilitating toxicity of cancer treatment. Effective pharmacological treatments remain limited. Preclinical studies suggest cannabinoids reduce neuropathic pain through modulation of neurotransmission, neuroinflammation, and oxidative stress. However, clinical evidence in CIPN remains inconclusive. This systematic review evaluated the efficacy and safety of cannabis-based medicinal products (CBMPs) for the treatment or prevention of CIPN. A systematic search of PubMed MEDLINE, OVID EMBASE, and OVID MEDLINE was conducted to ident…

Post-stroke sleep disordered breathing and the effect of positive airway pressure treatment: An updated systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized control trials.

Obstructive sleep apnea is under-diagnosed, under-reported and therefore under-treated in patients after a stroke. The aim of this meta-analysis of Randomized Control Trials (RCTs) was to investigate the effectiveness of positive airway treatment on recurrent vascular events, neurological deficit, functional independence, depression, sleepiness and cognitive function in patients post-stroke. Records identified from Embase Elsevier Database (Embase, Medline/PubMed, Preprints, PubMed-not-Medline) were searched from inception in July 2024, up to September 2024. After screening 72387 records, 21 R…

Germline MC1R variants and frequency of somatic BRAF, NRAS, and TERT mutations in melanoma: Literature review and meta-analysis.

Germline variants of the melanocortin-1-receptor (MC1R) gene are the most common genetic trait predisposing to cutaneous melanoma (CM). Here, we performed a literature review and meta-analysis of the association between MC1R gene variants and the frequency of somatic mutations of the BRAF, NRAS, and TERT genes in CM patients. We included studies published until January 2020 in MEDLINE, EMBASE, Ovid Medline, and two grey literature databases. Random effect models were used to pool study-specific estimates into summary odds ratio (SOR) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Subgroup and sensitivity…

An unusual cause of urinary retention in early pregnancy.

Urinary retention is a rare complication of early pregnancy with few serious sequelae. A Medline search found no association between urinary symptoms and cervical pregnancy. This case describes urinary retention resulting from a cervical pregnancy and describes a proposed mechanism to explain the presenting symptoms. Cervical pregnancy should be considered as a rare cause of acute retention of urine in early pregnancy, especially in the presence of vaginal bleeding.
