We usually perceive a stationary, stable world despite coherent visual motion induced by eye movements. This astonishing example of perceptual invariance results from a comparison of visual information with internal reference signals (nonretinal signals) predicting the visual consequences of an eye movement. The important consequence of this concept is that our subjective percept of visual motion reflects the outcome of this comparison rather than retinal image slip. To localize the cortical networks underlying this comparison, we compared magnetoencephalography (MEG) responses under two condi…

The present study combined functional magnetoencephalography (MEG) and anatomical magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) information in three patients affected by tuberous sclerosis and partial epilepsy. MEG recordings were performed during both spontaneous and visual evoked activity. The former showed a large variety of complexes whose spatial and temporal distribution suggested different neuronal populations acting simultaneously in the same focal district. When these data were integrated with MRI images (magnetic source imaging, MSI) there was agreement in the definition of tubers and extension o…

Here, we present a large-scale, multi-center dataset of combined magnetoencephalographic (MEG) and electroencephalographic (EEG) recordings, along with eye-tracking data and high-resolution structural MRI (T1); complementing with iEEG and fMRI datasets that are shared in accompanying data papers. The data was obtained through an adversarial collaboration between advocates of two neuroscientific theories of consciousness: the Global Neuronal Workspace Theory and the Integrated Information Theory. The dataset includes recordings from 100 individuals (mean age 22.79 ± 3.59 years, 54 female, all r

Mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) is common in adolescents. Magnetoencephalography (MEG) studies (primarily reporting on adult males) have demonstrated abnormal resting-state (RS) brain activity in mTBI. The present study sought to identify RS abnormalities in male and female adolescents with mTBI (no previous Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders - 5th Edition diagnosis) identified from an outpatient specialty care concussion program setting as a basis for evaluating potential clinical utility. Visit 1 MEG RS data were obtained from 46 adolescents with mTBI (mean age: 15.4 ye…

BACKGROUND: Insomnia disorder (ID) is characterized by hyperarousal, yet the relationship between cortical excitability and large-scale network dynamics remains incompletely understood. While fMRI studies indicate network alterations in ID, high-temporal-resolution characterization of these dynamics across the sleep-wake cycle is lacking.
METHODS: Twenty-six patients with ID and 29 healthy controls underwent eyes-closed resting-state OPM-MEG recordings during evening (pre-sleep) and morning (post-awakening) sessions. We analyzed the aperiodic spectral exponent to index cortical excitability a

This magnetoencephalography study investigated the spatiotemporal neural responses during single-word reading. We used a silent reading task with linguistic stimuli varying in lexicality and frequency (high- and low-frequency words, and pseudowords), and tested typically developing (TD) and dyslexic developing (DD) children (aged 7 to 12). We observed no significant sensitivity to word frequency or lexicality either within or between the groups, likely reflecting the constraints of the silent reading paradigm. Direct comparisons between the groups revealed significant amplitude reductions in t…

Background: Traumatic events can disrupt psychological functioning, leading to conditions such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). However, not all trauma-exposed individuals develop PTSD. While neurobiological alterations in PTSD are well-documented, the impact of trauma exposure on resting-state (RS) brain activity, particularly dynamics of brain states (microstates, MS), remains unclear.Aim: To address this gap, this study investigates RS brain activity of trauma-exposed non-PTSD (TENP) individuals compared to PTSD patients, exploiting magnetoencephalography (MEG) and source-level MS …

Children and youth with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) demonstrate difficulties with social, emotional and cognitive functions in addition to the core diagnosis of obsessions and compulsions. This is the first magnetoencephalography (MEG) study to examine whole-brain neurophysiological functional connectivity of emotional face processing networks in paediatric OCD. Seventy-two participants (OCD: n = 36; age 8-17 yrs; typically developing controls: n = 36, age 8-17 yrs) completed an implicit emotional face processing task in the MEG. Functional connectivity networks in canonical frequency …

In the neurobiology of syntax, a methodological challenge is to vary syntax while holding semantics constant. Changes in syntactic structure usually correlate with changes in meaning. We approached this challenge from a new angle. We deployed word lists-typically, the unstructured control in studies of syntax-as both test and control stimuli. Three-noun lists ("lamps, dolls, guitars") were embedded in sentences ("The eccentric man hoarded lamps, dolls, guitars…") and in longer lists ("forks, pen, toilet, rodeo, lamps, dolls, guitars…"). This allowed us to minimize contributions from lexical se

Sensory perceptions are coded by complex neural dynamics of regional communication in the brain. Thus, sensory abnormalities such as chronic pain may occur when neural dynamics go awry. Previous studies of cross-network dynamic functional connectivity in chronic pain identified abnormalities but were based on functional MRI which only captures slow temporal features. Here we conducted a magnetoencephalography (MEG) study to investigate fine temporal dynamics of aberrant cross-regional and cross-network communication of the dynamic pain connectome in patients with chronic pain. We also introduc…

Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is an effective treatment method for a range of neurological and psychiatric disorders. It involves implantation of stimulating electrodes in a precisely guided fashion into subcortical structures and, at a later stage, chronic stimulation of these structures with an implantable pulse generator. While the DBS surgery makes it possible to both record brain activity and stimulate parts of the brain that are difficult to reach with non-invasive techniques, electroencephalography (EEG) and magnetoencephalography (MEG) provide complementary information from other brain …

The present study used resting state MEG whole-head recordings to identify how chronic tonal tinnitus relates to altered functional connectivity of brain's intrinsic cortical networks. Resting state MEG activity of 40 chronic tinnitus patients and 40 matched human controls was compared identifying significant alterations in intrinsic networks of the tinnitus population. Directed functional connectivity of the resting brain, at a whole cortex level, was estimated by means of a statistical comparison of the estimated phase Transfer Entropy (pTE) between the time-series of cortical activations, a

To gain insight into possible underlying mechanism(s) of visual hallucinations (VH) in Parkinson's disease (PD), we explored changes in local oscillatory activity in different frequency bands with source-space magnetoencephalography (MEG). Eyes-closed resting-state MEG recordings were obtained from 20 PD patients with hallucinations (Hall+) and 20 PD patients without hallucinations (Hall-), matched for age, gender and disease severity. The Hall+ group was subdivided into 10 patients with VH only (unimodal Hall+) and 10 patients with multimodal hallucinations (multimodal Hall+). Subsequently, n…

Resting MEG activities were compared between patients with left temporal lobe epilepsy (LTLE) and normal controls. Using SAMg2, the activities of MEG data were reconstructed and normalized. Significantly elevated SAMg2 signals were found in LTLE patients in the left temporal lobe and medial structures. Marked decreases of SAMg2 signals were found in the wide extratemporal lobe regions, such as the bilateral visual cortex. The study also demonstrated a positive correlation between the seizure frequency and brain activities of the abnormal regions after the multiple linear regression analysis. T
