Gender and Sexual Orientation Differences in the Relationship Between Social Media Use and Disordered Eating: Results From a Serial Cross-Sectional Youth Survey From 2022 to 2024.

PURPOSE: The COVID-19 pandemic associated with a sustained increase in youth online activity and a sharp increase in eating disorder-related hospitalizations. Social media use and its portrayal of unrealistic body types have been previously linked to poor body image and disordered eating (DE), particularly affecting girls, transgender and gender-expansive (TGE) individuals, and sexual minorities (SM). We aimed to assess the effects of time on social media on DE among youth in British Columbia (BC), Canada, across intersecting identities of gender and sexual orientation. METHODS: Our serial cr

The Paradox of Interactive Media: The Potential for Video Games and Virtual Reality as Tools for Violence Prevention.

Interactive media such as video games and virtual reality (VR) provide users with lived experiences that may be dangerous or even impossible in daily life. By providing interactive experiences in highly authentic, detail-rich contexts, these technologies have demonstrated measurable success in impacting how people think, feel, and behave in the physical world. At the same time, violent interactive media content has been historically connected with a range of antisocial effects in both popular press and academic research. Extant literature has established a small-but-statistically significant e

Platform-specific digital media use and psychological distress among Turkish adults: evidence from a nationally representative, cross-sectional survey.

Digital media's mental-health signature may depend on which platform a population uses, yet nationally representative evidence that distinguishes platforms is scarce, especially for upper-middle-income, Muslim-majority, non-Arab settings. We examined platform-specific associations between digital media use and psychological distress in the Turkish adult population, and whether age moderates them, using the 2024 Turkish General Social Survey, a probability-based, nationally representative survey of adults aged 18 and over (N = 2,615; analytical N = 1,478 after listwise deletion). Psychological

Effect of Technology and Digital Media Use on Adolescent Health and Development: Protocol for a Multimethod Longitudinal Study.

BACKGROUND: Technology and digital media (TDM) use is integral to modern adolescence; adolescents have been labeled as "digital natives," since they have had exposure to digital technology for their entire lives. Previous evidence has illustrated TDM's connections with adolescent risk behaviors such as increased alcohol use and social media exposure, as well as relationships with adolescent well-being such as improved socioemotional health and social media connections with peers. Although several recent review articles have described both the benefits and risks of technology use, most individu…

Brain rot in the digital age: Sleep loss, circadian disruption, and neurocognitive vulnerability.

The colloquial expression "brain rot" is increasingly used to describe attentional fragmentation, cognitive fatigue, motivational blunting, and a sense of mental "slowness" after prolonged engagement with high-intensity digital media. In this semi-structured narrative review, we use the term as a heuristic bridge concept rather than a formal diagnosis and examine whether sleep and circadian mechanisms provide a biologically coherent account of these complaints. PubMed and Google Scholar were searched through March 2026, with emphasis on chronobiology, sleep deprivation/restriction, digital med

Witnesses' susceptibility to misleading post-event information delivered in a social media-style video.

In many criminal cases, outcomes rely on eyewitness evidence. Exposure to misleading information after an event reduces the accuracy of witnesses' memories. In some circumstances, warnings about misinformation can protect witnesses. As social media is a growing source of misleading information, this study examined the effect of misleading post-event information delivered via a social media-style video, as well as the utility of a minimal versus detailed warning. Participants (N = 145) watched a video showing an electrician stealing items from a client's home. Next, they received one of three p

Gene therapy by targeted adenovirus-mediated knockdown of pulmonary endothelial Tph1 attenuates hypoxia-induced pulmonary hypertension.

Serotonin is produced by pulmonary arterial endothelial cells (PAEC) via tryptophan hydroxylase-1 (Tph1). Pathologically, serotonin acts on underlying pulmonary arterial cells, contributing to vascular remodeling associated with pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH). The effects of hypoxia on PAEC-Tph1 activity are unknown. We investigated the potential of a gene therapy approach to PAH using selective inhibition of PAEC-Tph1 in vivo in a hypoxic model of PAH. We exposed cultured bovine pulmonary arterial smooth muscle cells (bPASMCs) to conditioned media from human PAECs (hPAECs) before and a

Ionic calcium levels in oviduct explant-conditioned media from an Australian marsupial, the brushtail possum (Trichosurus vulpecula) and its relevance to in vitro fertilization.

Gametes from the brushtail possum (Trichosurus vulpecula), an Australian marsupial, require exposure to oviductal cells and/or their secretions before sperm binding and penetration of the zona pellucida can occur. Sperm-egg fusion, the next critical step in fertilization has not previously been reported in vitro. Here we describe the refinement of an oviduct epithelial cell (OEC) explant culture system using two different media to obtain in vitro sperm-egg fusion in the brushtail possum for the first time. Conditioned media from OEC explant cultures were supplemented with either 1% fetal calf

Animated media content and the Papageno effect: Experimental evidence for the suicide-preventive potential of coping-oriented narratives in the series BoJack Horseman.

Suicide-related media portrayals can exert both harmful and protective effects on suicide-related outcomes, with the Papageno effect describing suicide-preventive influences of coping-oriented portrayals. Adult animated series have largely been absent from research, despite animation's popularity and its distinctive capacity to externalize psychological states, rendering experiences of mental health crises and recovery particularly accessible to viewers. Using an experimental design (N = 146) with pre- and post-measures of suicidal thoughts, participants watched a brief video clip from the Net

When health meets politics: Selective gatekeeping of health experts in Chinese media during COVID-19.

Recent global health crises have underscored the need for adaptive policymaking amid evolving evidence, alongside the political vulnerability of science communication. This study investigates the politics of health policy communication in a system where the government, media, and experts closely coordinate their messaging. We propose a Selective Gatekeeping framework to explain how state and media actors collaborate to amplify scientific voices aligned with policy objectives while marginalizing alternative perspectives. Using China's COVID-19 policy (2020-2022) as a case study, we analyze over

Endocrine disruptors, travel-associated illness, and media violence: important health considerations for children and adolescents.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This article addresses three important topics that are part of contemporary life for children: endocrine disruptors, hazards of international travel, and the impact of media violence on children and adolescents. RECENT FINDINGS: Practitioners will learn about phthalates and Bisphenol-A as endocrine disruptors. In published studies, elevated phthalates were associated with an increase in pubertal gynecomastia and premature thelarche. Bisphenol-A was judged by the Food and Drug Administration as having some concern for potential effects on brain, behavior, and prostate gland

Alcohol Advertising at the Beach: Insights From Young People in Western Australia.

BACKGROUND: Advertising and marketing by the alcohol industry serve to normalise alcohol use, with exposure to alcohol advertising linked to earlier and riskier drinking among young people. Advertising that portrays alcohol use in and around waterways is of particular concern, with one in five fatal drownings being associated with alcohol. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to explore the types of alcohol advertising that young people were exposed to, and to determine whether exposure to alcohol advertising was related to their alcohol use in aquatic environments. METHODS: We surveyed 102 young peo

Evaluation of sustainable diagnostic approaches in metastatic breast cancer (MBC).

INTRODUCTION: Assessing bone metastases in metastatic breast cancer is challenging. Due to rising concerns over energy use and emissions, energy-efficient imaging is essential. This study aimed to compare three diagnostic imaging approaches used in therapy monitoring of MBC patients, evaluating both their environmental impact-quantified by energy consumption and related greenhouse gas emissions-and their biological cost, defined as patient exposure to ionizing radiation and contrast media volume. METHODS: We retrospectively analysed 70 patients with bone-dominant metastatic breast cancer who

Long-term integrated environmental radioactivity monitoring and public dose assessment across a full emergency planning zone.

This study presents an 8-y (2017-2024) integrated environmental radioactivity monitoring program and public dose assessment conducted across the entire Emergency Planning Zone (EPZ) of the Hanbit Nuclear Power Plant in the Republic of Korea. Following the expansion of the EPZ to a 30 km radius, a comprehensive multi-media monitoring framework was established, covering rainwater, surface soil, seawater, and locally produced foodstuffs. To our knowledge, this study represents one of the first EPZ-scale, integrated multi-media environmental radioactivity datasets in Korea, enabling a systematic e
