Emergency department visits for traumatic brain injury in a birth cohort of Medicaid-insured children.

OBJECTIVES: To analyse emergency department-based data on paediatric traumatic brain injury (TBI). METHODS: This study constructed a retrospective cohort of 493,890 children who were born in New York City between 1999-2007 and who were enrolled in the New York Medicaid programme at the time of their birth and followed these children from birth to the end of 2007. RESULTS: There were 62,089 injury-related emergency department visits, of which 1290 had ICD-9 codes consistent with TBI. Children with TBI were more likely to be male (59.4% vs 51.4%) and Hispanic (43.9% vs 26.3%) than those in the…

The prevalence of and factors associated with chronic atrial fibrillation in Medicare/Medicaid-eligible dialysis patients.

Atrial fibrillation is an important comorbidity with substantial therapeutic implications in dialysis patients but its prevalence varies in different studies. We used a database that includes patients in the United States on hemodialysis who were eligible for government assistance with prescription drugs. We then used ICD-9 codes from billing claims in this database to identify patients with chronic atrial fibrillation. Multivariable logistic regression was used to determine adjusted prevalence odds ratios for associated factors. Of 63,884 individuals, the prevalence of chronic atrial fibrilla

Analysis of injury- and violence-related fatalities in the Ohio Medicaid population: identifying opportunities for prevention.

BACKGROUND: To identify the leading causes of injury- and violence-related deaths in demographic subgroups of the population in Ohio, by Medicaid status. METHODS: We used linked Ohio Medicaid and death certificate files, 1992 to 1998, and obtained the probability (p) of dying from a specific mechanism of injury--given death from injury--by Medicaid status, using multinomial multivariable logistic regression analysis. Probabilities were rank-ordered to identify the leading causes of death in each subgroup. RESULTS: The leading cause of injury-related deaths was homicide among Medicaid deceden…

Association of medicaid expansion with lung cancer-specific and overall mortality: A difference-in-differences analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Medicaid expansion under the Affordable Care Act (ACA) sought to improve access to timely cancer diagnosis and treatment among low‑income populations. Lung cancer remains the leading cause of cancer-related mortality in the United States, and disparities in outcomes may be sensitive to shifts in insurance coverage. This study evaluates the association between Medicaid expansion and both cancer-specific mortality and overall mortality among adults with lung cancer in California (expansion state) compared with Texas (non-expansion state). METHODS: We conducted a retrospective coho…

Therapy and Antidepressant Use in 8- to 29-Year-Old Autistic Medicaid Enrollees With Depression.

Promoting access to effective depression treatment represents a crucial opportunity to mitigate increased suicide risk. We examined treatment trajectories for 8- to 29-year-old autistic enrollees of Medicaid, the U.S. safety net insurance program, with a new claim for major depressive disorder (MDD; N = 44,074). Using group-based trajectory modeling, we identified groups with similar probabilities of receiving psychotherapy or antidepressants in the 5 months following their new MDD claim - a period of acute treatment need. We also examined odds of trajectory group membership by demographic fac…

Bridging the Coverage Gap: State Medicaid Limitations for Cardiac Rehabilitation and Risk to Disadvantaged Communities.

BACKGROUND: Cardiac rehabilitation (CR) is a guideline-supported, evidence-based intervention that improves cardiovascular outcomes, yet access remains inconsistent for Medicaid beneficiaries because coverage policies vary across states. PROJECT RATIONALE: We evaluated Medicaid reimbursement for outpatient CR services across all 50 U.S. states to identify policy variation that may contribute to inequitable access for vulnerable populations. PROJECT SUMMARY: A cross-sectional survey review of state Medicaid fee schedules, provider manuals, coverage policies, and direct communication with Medi…

Federal Policy Changes Endanger Medicaid's Critical Role in Perinatal Care and Health Equity.

Medicaid is the nation's largest public health insurer and the primary payer of perinatal care; it covers more than 70 million low-income residents and 41% of births. The One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBBA), which was signed into law on July 4, 2025, introduced the largest Medicaid funding reductions in the program's history-an estimated $1.1 trillion over 10 years. In this article, we describe the major OBBBA provisions related to eligibility and Medicaid financing and the anticipated effects of these provisions on the delivery of perinatal care services and related outcomes. Although pregnant…

Continuity of Medications for Opioid Use Disorder in States With and Without Medicaid Prescription Cap Policies.

BACKGROUND: Medicaid prescription cap policies persist in 12 states; however, it is unclear how they affect the quality of opioid use disorder (OUD) treatment. OBJECTIVES: To examine the association between cap policies and the continuity in receipt of medication for OUD (MOUD) treatment in Medicaid. METHODS: Using 2016-2021 T-MSIS Analytical Files data from 37 states, we identified nondual adult (18-64 y) Medicaid enrollees diagnosed with OUD who received MOUD. The exposure was the state's Medicaid prescription cap policy status. The main outcome was a binary variable for MOUD continuity, o…
