Neural correlates of reward-based spatial learning in persons with cocaine dependence.

Dysfunctional learning systems are thought to be central to the pathogenesis of and impair recovery from addictions. The functioning of the brain circuits for episodic memory or learning that support goal-directed behavior has not been studied previously in persons with cocaine dependence (CD). Thirteen abstinent CD and 13 healthy participants underwent MRI scanning while performing a task that requires the use of spatial cues to navigate a virtual-reality environment and find monetary rewards, allowing the functional assessment of the brain systems for spatial learning, a form of episodic mem

Effects of lexical-semantic treatment on memory in early Alzheimer disease: an observer-blinded randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Episodic memory and semantic abilities deteriorate early in Alzheimer disease (AD). Since the cognitive system includes interconnected and reciprocally influenced neuronal networks, the authors hypothesized that stimulation of lexical-semantic abilities may benefit semantically structured episodic memory. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effects of lexical-semantic stimulation (LSS) on verbal communication and episodic memory in early AD. METHODS: Forty AD participants were randomized to LSS or unstructured cognitive stimulation (UCS) as control condition. Treatments lasted 3 months

Cognitive impairment in Aboriginal people with heavy episodic patterns of alcohol use.

BACKGROUND: With chronic alcohol abuse, cognitive studies suggest that progressive cognitive decline may precede more serious and irreversible neurological syndromes. The early detection of cognitive impairment may therefore aid in the prevention of permanent brain damage. Despite the devastating consequences of alcohol abuse among Aboriginal Australians, the effects on brain function have never been studied in this population and a lack of appropriate assessment tools has prevented the development of such research. AIMS: To determine the impact of long-term and heavy episodic alcohol use on

An integrative memory model of recollection and familiarity to understand memory deficits.

Humans can recollect past events in details (recollection) and/or know that an object, person, or place has been encountered before (familiarity). During the last two decades, there has been intense debate about how recollection and familiarity are organized in the brain. Here, we propose an integrative memory model which describes the distributed and interactive neurocognitive architecture of representations and operations underlying recollection and familiarity. In this architecture, the subjective experience of recollection and familiarity arises from the interaction between core systems (s

Fine-Tuning the Details: Post-encoding Music Differentially Impacts General and Detailed Memory.

Music can effectively induce emotional arousal, which is associated with the release of stress hormones that are important for the emotional modulation of memory. Thus, music may serve as a powerful modulator of memory and mood, making it a promising therapeutic tool for memory and mood disorders such as Alzheimer's disease or depression. However, music's impact on memory depends on its features, timing, and ability to elicit emotional arousal. In the current study, we manipulated various features of music played during post-encoding memory consolidation to elicit emotional arousal and impact

Sleep forms flexible context representations in toddlers.

Sleep consolidates episodic memory through a hippocampus-dependent process in adults. Whether and how sleep supports memory consolidation during early life, when hippocampal function is immature, remains unclear. Here, we examined effects of sleep on the consolidation of spatial context, a core component of episodic memory, in toddlers aged 2-3 years. Toddlers were familiarized with two spatial contexts, followed by a ~ 90-min nap or equivalent wake period. Afterwards, using a hide-and-seek game we tested their ability to relocate toys within these contexts. Only after post-familiarization sle

Neural correlates of autobiographical memory deficits across psychiatric disorders: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Dysfunction of autobiographical memory (AM) is one of the core markers of psychiatric disorders such as major depressive disorder and schizophrenia. However, it remains unclear whether there is a common neural basis underlying AM impairment across psychiatric patients. In this study, a systematic review and meta-analysis using both Seed-based d Mapping with Permutation of Subject Images (SDM-PSI) and Activation Likelihood Estimation (ALE) approaches were conducted to examine brain activation differences between psychiatric populations and healthy controls during AM. A computerized search was p

Context-independent expression of spatial code in hippocampus.

The hippocampus plays a crucial role in the formation and retrieval of spatial memory across mammals and episodic memory in humans. Episodic and spatial memories can be retrieved irrespective of the subject's awake behavioral state and independently of its actual spatial context. However, the nature of hippocampal network activity during such out-context retrieval has not been described so far. Theoretically, context-independent spatial memory retrieval suggests a shift of the hippocampal spatial representations from coding the current spatial context to coding the remembered environment. In t

Prospective Memory Function Predicts Future Cognitive Decline and Incident Dementia.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to test whether prospective memory (PM) was an early cognitive marker of future cognitive decline and incident dementia using longitudinal data spanning 8 years from the Sydney Memory and Ageing Study. METHODS: At baseline, 121 participants aged 72-91 years were tested in PM using a validated PM task, Virtual Week, which included time- and event-based tasks presented with varying regularity. Responses were scored "Correct" if completed accurately and "Missed" if the target was not remembered at any time. Measures of cognition were taken at baseline and 2-year inte

Influence of amyloid and diagnostic syndrome on non-traditional memory scores in early-onset Alzheimer's disease.

INTRODUCTION: The Rey Auditory Verbal Learning Test (RAVLT) is a useful neuropsychological test for describing episodic memory impairment in dementia. However, there is limited research on its utility in early-onset Alzheimer's disease (EOAD). We assess the influence of amyloid and diagnostic syndrome on several memory scores in EOAD. METHODS: We transcribed RAVLT recordings from 303 subjects in the Longitudinal Early-Onset Alzheimer's Disease Study. Subjects were grouped by amyloid status and syndrome. Primacy, recency, J-curve, duration, stopping time, and speed score were calculated and en

The movement-induced self-reference effect: enhancing memorability through movement toward the self.

Much evidence suggests that bodily actions affect cognitive states. In particular, pulling owned objects toward the self improves memory for those objects compared to memory for objects pushed away from the self. Experiments 1 and 2 examined the effect of incidental joystick movement on static stimuli, hypothesizing that using the physical self (rather than a computer monitor) as a reference point would enhance memory for items categorized via a toward-the-self action but not toward-the-computer-monitor action. Experiment 3 examined whether movement toward an external representation of self, o

High-intensity walking in midlife is associated with improved memory in physically capable older adults.

BACKGROUND: Little is known about the associations of midlife- and late life-initiated walking with Alzheimer's disease (AD)-related cognitive decline in humans. We aimed to investigate whether high-intensity, prolonged, midlife-initiated walking is associated with changes in AD-related cognitive decline in physically capable older adults. METHODS: We studied 188 physically capable participants aged 65-90 years without dementia who underwent comprehensive clinical assessment, including of their walking modality (i.e., intensity, duration, midlife- or late life-onset), memory- or non-memory an

Sense of agency strengthens memory for self-caused spatial information.

Why do some experiences remain vivid while others fade? One factor may be the sense of agency (SoA), which shares self-referential mechanisms with episodic memory. We investigated whether SoA over action outcomes modulates item and spatial long-term memory. During intentional encoding, participants' keypresses moved an object either congruently or incongruently with the chosen direction. One hour later, item and spatial memory were tested. Participants reported higher SoA in congruent trials. Congruency and higher SoA ratings were associated with faster item-recognition responses without chang

Encoding of semantic structure shapes temporal order memory for visual object stimuli.

Episodic memory does not perfectly reproduce past experiences but combines encoded episode-specific information and semantic knowledge in a constructive way. Previous research has shown that semantic category knowledge can bias location memory for individual items, suggesting that similar mechanisms may affect other key dimensions of episodic memory. Here, we investigated whether immediate temporal order memory is influenced by semantic relatedness between encoded items and whether this effect is modulated by semantic structure at encoding, episodic association strength and semantic typicality

Impaired perception of mnemonic oldness, but not mnemonic newness, after parietal lobe damage.

In studies of episodic memory retrieval, recognition paradigms are known to elicit robust activations in the inferior parietal lobe. However, damage to this region does not produce severe deficits in episodic memory performance as indexed by typical accuracy measures. Rather, because problems with memory confidence are frequently reported, the observed deficits may be best described as "metamemory" or subjective memory deficits. Here, we further investigated the inferior parietal lobe's role in recognition memory as well as metamemory. We tested the hypothesis that the inferior parietal lobe g

Retrieval of autobiographical memory in Alzheimer's disease: relation to volumes of medial temporal lobe and other structures.

The representation of autobiographical memory is distributed over a network of brain structures, with the medial temporal lobe (MTL) at its epicenter. Some believe that, over time, all memories become independent of their MTL component ("consolidation theories"). Others have suggested that this is true only of semantic memory, while episodic aspects of autobiographical memories are dependent on the MTL for as long as they exist, such as multiple trace theory (MTT). In the present study, the volumes of 28 brain regions, including the MTL, and their relation to autobiographical memory were inves

I cannot remember, but I know my past events: remembering and knowing in a patient with amnesic syndrome.

Case Y.K. has severe anterograde amnesia and a selective loss of specific personal episodes in his remote memories (Hirano & Noguchi, 1998). In this paper, we attempted to analyze remembering (R) and knowing (K) responses, that is, the relationship between autobiographical remembering and remembering accompanied by subjective experience. Although the rate of R responses was significantly higher than that of K responses in control subjects, Y.K.'s R responses were rare in all subtypes of remote memories. Based on these results, we conclude that Y.K.'s memories on autobiographical incident task

Evaluating the 8-Year Association Between Cognition and Beta Amyloid in the Dallas Lifespan Brain Study Cohort.

BACKGROUND: Mounting evidence suggests beta amyloid (Aβ) is not the sole initiating driver of cognitive decline in Alzheimer's disease (AD). This study explores whether there is an association between cognitive decline over eight years and Aβ. METHODS: Data from 48 participants in the Dallas Lifespan Brain Study (DLBS) were analyzed in the present study. Prior to selection, participants were classified as Aβ+ or Aβ- based on global Aβ deposition. All 24 Aβ+ participants with complete data for the purposes of the present study were sex- and age-matched with an Aβ- participant and assorted into

Singing for memory: neural and cognitive effects of a choral intervention in older adults.

INTRODUCTION: Lifestyle factors are important predictors of successful aging, and targeted interventions could be key to mitigating the negative effects of aging. Episodic memory is of particular interest as it is notably sensitive to aging. Given the social, intellectual, and physical stimulation that choral singing provides, along with the enjoyment it offers which is a strong motivator, it has been suggested as a particularly promising intervention to promote successful aging. METHOD: Thirty-four participants, aged 65 to 75 at recruitment, took part in a choral singing intervention involvi
