OBJECTIVES: To determine the serum prolactin levels in women at sea level and at high altitude, and the prevalence of hyperprolactinemia in both places.
METHODS: The study included 303 normal women and 112 women with any reproductive dysfunction (menstrual abnormalities, galactorrhea or dysmenorrhea). From these, 228 were living in Lima at 150 m above sea level and 187 were living in Cerro de Pasco at 4340 m. Normal women included nonpregnant and pregnant women. Menstrual abnormalities included amenorrhea, oligomenorrhea and polymenorrhea.

Transvaginal ultrasound examinations were performed in 37 oligo- or a-menorrheic women to describe ovarian changes and potential correlations with clinical and some biochemical features of polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS). OBJECTIVE: To re-evaluate the concept of polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) in view of androgenic function.
DESIGN: Patients were studied endocrinologically and ultrasonographically.
SETTING: This study was performed as a clinical investigation.
PATIENTS, PARTICIPANTS: Sixty-nine euprolactinemic anovulatory patients with luteinizing hormone (LH) hypersecretion and 18 normal volunteers were selected.

To evaluate the safety and effectiveness of using the Multiload 250 (MLCu250) beyond its recommended maximum use time of three years, two groups of MLCu250 users were evaluated; one group had used their IUDs for less than three years and the other group had used their IUDs from 3 to 9 years. Except for pelvic infections, there were no significant differences between the two groups in IUD event rates or the incidence of complications. All pelvic infections in the long-term user group were mild and did not necessitate IUD removal.

Of 27 women in the reproductive age group receiving continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis for more than 3 months, 4 of 7 who menstruated developed recurrent hemoperitoneum. Twenty five patients with hyperprolactinaemia were treated with pergolide mesylate, a new dopamine receptor agonist. Twenty three received treatment for six to 20 months, and in all serum prolactin concentrations were considerably reduced. In most patients prolactin concentrations were maintained in the normal range by a low, once daily dose of pergolide and reversal of associated reproductive disorders was observed. Considerable variability in the severity of Asherman's syndrome was observed, and a high incidence of other gynecological disorders was discovered, mainly by endoscopy, in patients with intrauterine synechiae.
