Sociodemographic and mental health characteristics associated with participating in a digital mental health screening platform on college campuses.

OBJECTIVE: The authors sought to identify sociodemographic and mental health characteristics associated with participating in an online mental health screening platform. PARTICIPANTS: US college students who participated in the Interactive Screening Program (ISP, n = 2,817) or the Healthy Minds Study (HMS, n = 17,880) at ten campuses that administered both between 2016 and 2022. The HMS was used as a proxy of the study body at that institution. METHODS: This cross-sectional analysis linked data from the HMS and the ISP. Logistic regression was used to model the odds of ISP participation. RE

Mental Healthcare Professionals' Own Mental Health Disclosure to their Supervisor: Investigating Barriers and Facilitators, Experiences, and Needs.

PURPOSE: For mental healthcare professionals (MHPs) with mental health issues and illness (MHI), disclosure to a supervisor at work can be a dilemma: it may facilitate support but also involves risks of stigma and discrimination. This study examined barriers and facilitators, experiences, and needs regarding disclosure of MHI to supervisors among MHPs, and compared disclosers and non-disclosers. METHODS: A cross-sectional online questionnaire was completed by 298 MHPs with MHI working in five Dutch community mental healthcare centers. Descriptive analyses summarized disclosure decisions, barr

Opportunities and challenges of joint crisis plans in mental healthcare: a qualitative interview study with mental health professionals.

BACKGROUND: Psychiatric advance directives (PADs) and joint crisis plans (JCPs) are documents that allow users of mental health services to state their preferences for treatment for a future situation in which they are unable to give consent. In Germany, both PADs and JCPs are legally binding in the context of mental healthcare. OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study was to examine mental health professionals' views on PADs and JCPs, identify challenges in their application in clinical practice, and derive recommendations for their implementation. METHODS: We conducted semi-structured inter

When Markets Shape AI Mental Health Self-Management Tools: Consequences for Serious Mental Illness.

AI-enabled self-management health tools are increasingly promoted within health care policy as part of digital self-management models for mental health care. However, development is concentrated on scalable, low-intensity interventions for common conditions, such as anxiety and depression, rather than on populations with the greatest clinical need, such as those with serious mental illness (SMI). This includes schizophrenia-spectrum and bipolar disorders, which remain comparatively underserved, despite experiencing a disproportionate burden of morbidity and service use. However, the clinical f

College Students' Community Attitudes Towards Mental Illness: Do Mental Health Problems and Literacy Matter?

BACKGROUND: The mental health of college students has become a critical concern, with depression, anxiety and stress (DAS) reaching alarming levels. Despite the vital role of societal attitudes in shaping mental health outcomes, the factors and mechanisms influencing college students' community attitudes towards mental illness (CAMI) remain underexplored. AIM: This study aims to investigate the CAMI, mental health problems and mental health literacy (MHL) among Chinese college students and to analyse the relationships between them. METHODS: A total of 600 college students from Jinan City, Sh

What Is in There for Artificial Intelligence to Support Mental Health Care for Persons with Serious Mental Illness? Opportunities and Challenges.

Artificial intelligence (AI) holds potential to support persons with serious mental illness, but evidence remains limited. To explore opportunities and challenges there, we conducted qualitative interviews with multiple Norwegian mental health stakeholders. Data was analyzed using thematic analysis and sentiment analysis. Twenty-two informants shared their opinions, with half expressing moderately negative sentiments. Findings suggest AI can optimize mental health service delivery and encourage a flexible approach to recovery. However, AI's ability to provide emotional support may inadvertentl

Mental Health Symptoms and Receipt of Mental Health Care Among US Adults Diagnosed With Kidney Disease.

INTRODUCTION: Nationally representative estimates of mental health symptoms and services in adults with kidney disease are limited. The objective of this study was to examine the mental health status and use of health care among adults with and without kidney disease. METHODS: We used data from the 2021 National Health Interview Survey. Diagnosed kidney disease is based on adults who reported ever being told by a doctor or other health professional that they had weak or failing kidneys. The survey question captures data on adults who are aware of having kidney disease and most likely have adv

Ebola Virus Disease and Pediatric Mental Health: Long-Term Mediating Effects of Caregiver Mental Health.

OBJECTIVE: Previous research suggests that adult survivors of Ebola virus disease (EVD) experience mental health problems following their infection. This study examines long-term mental health consequences of EVD for child survivors, and those affected by EVD but not themselves infected, compared to controls. This study also examines the mediating effects of caregiver mental health on children's mental health outcomes. METHOD: Using a case-control study design, we recruited 663 children and adolescents ("children" throughout; aged 10-17 years) and their caregivers at 2 time points, from 6 geo

Assessment of the Anterior Loop and Pattern of Entry of Mental Nerve Into the Mental Foramen: A Radiographic Study of Panoramic Images.

INTRODUCTION: The precise location of the mental foramina is an essential landmark in planning the position of dental implants in the anterior mandible. Injury to inferior alveolar nerve during anterior mandibular implant surgery causes altered sensation which greatly affects patient satisfaction. METHODS: In this study, we assessed the prevalence of anterior loop of mental nerve and the pattern of entry of mental nerve into the mental foramen. Three hundred panoramic radiographs (600 hemimandibles) obtained from records maintained in the Department of Oral Medicine and Radiology were randoml

Prevalence and correlates of mental disorders among women: results from the Saudi National Mental Health Survey.

BACKGROUND: Mental disorders account for a significant proportion of the world's disease burden and are more significant among females than males. However, most global mental health research is sex neutral, including in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. This study, therefore, estimated the prevalence of mental disorders and investigated the sociodemographic correlates, sex disadvantage factors, and treatment-seeking in Saudi women concerning lifetime and 12-month mental disorders. METHOD: The Saudi National Mental Health Survey is a stratified multistage clustered area probability design. Lifetime
