Biodegradation of free cyanide and subsequent utilisation of biodegradation by-products by Bacillus consortia: optimisation using response surface methodology.

A mesophilic alkali-tolerant bacterial consortium belonging to the Bacillus genus was evaluated for its ability to biodegrade high free cyanide (CN(-)) concentration (up to 500 mg CN(-)/L), subsequent to the oxidation of the formed ammonium and nitrates in a continuous bioreactor system solely supplemented with whey waste. Furthermore, an optimisation study for successful cyanide biodegradation by this consortium was evaluated in batch bioreactors (BBs) using response surface methodology (RSM). The input variables, that is, pH, temperature and whey-waste concentration, were optimised using a n

Effect of trichloroethylene and tetrachloroethylene on methane oxidation and community structure of methanotrophic consortium.

The methane oxidation rate and community structure of a methanotrophic consortium were analyzed to determine the effects of trichloroethylene (TCE) and tetrachloroethylene (PCE) on methane oxidation. The maximum methane oxidation rate (Vmax ) of the consortium was 326.8 μmol·g-dry biomass(-1)·h(-1), and it had a half-saturation constant (Km ) of 143.8 μM. The addition of TCE or PCE resulted in decreased methane oxidation rates, which were decreased from 101.73 to 5.47-24.64 μmol·g-dry biomass(-1)·h(-1) with an increase in the TCE-to-methane ratio, and to 61.95-67.43 μmol·g-dry biomass(-1)·h(-1

A consortium of Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans, Streptococcus parasanguinis, and Filifactor alocis is present in sites prior to bone loss in a longitudinal study of localized aggressive periodontitis.

Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans-induced localized aggressive periodontitis (LAP) in African-American adolescents has been documented but is poorly understood. Two thousand fifty-eight adolescents aged 11 to 17 years were screened for their periodontal status and the presence of A. actinomycetemcomitans in their oral cavity. Seventy-one A. actinomycetemcomitans-negative and 63 A. actinomycetemcomitans-positive periodontally healthy subjects were enrolled, sampled, examined, and radiographed yearly for 3 years. Gingival and periodontal pocket depth and attachment levels were recorded. Dise

Decreased Phototoxic Effects of TiO₂ Nanoparticles in Consortium of Bacterial Isolates from Domestic Waste Water.

This study is aimed to explore the toxicity of TiO2 nanoparticles at low concentrations (0.25, 0.50 & 1.00 μg/ml); on five bacterial isolates and their consortium in waste water medium both in dark and UVA conditions. To critically examine the toxic effects of nanoparticles and the response mechanism(s) offered by microbes, several aspects were monitored viz. cell viability, ROS generation, SOD activity, membrane permeability, EPS release and biofilm formation. A dose and time dependent loss in viability was observed for treated isolates and the consortium. At the highest dose, after 24h, oxid

Enhancing recovery from gut microbiome dysbiosis and alleviating DSS-induced colitis in mice with a consortium of rare short-chain fatty acid-producing bacteria.

The human gut microbiota is a complex community comprising hundreds of species, with a few present in high abundance and the vast majority in low abundance. The biological functions and effects of these low-abundant species on their hosts are not yet fully understood. In this study, we assembled a bacterial consortium (SC-4) consisting of B. paravirosa, C. comes, M. indica, and A. butyriciproducens, which are low-abundant, short-chain fatty acid (SCFA)-producing bacteria isolated from healthy human gut, and tested its effect on host health using germ-free and human microbiota-associated coliti

Comparative analysis of gut microbial community in healthy and tibial dyschondroplasia affected chickens by high throughput sequencing.

Tibial dyschondroplasia (TD) is a common skeletal problem of avian species. The cause and etiology of this disorder is still not clear. The intestinal bacterial community is a complex ecosystem and plays very important role in healthy life of human and animals. Many researchers have made the connection between diseases and alteration of gut microbiota. However, little is know about the role of gut microbiota in TD. The objective of this study was to explore the diversity and composition of small and large intestinal bacterial communities of TD chickens. The intestinal contests were collected f

A moderately thermophilic mixed microbial culture for bioleaching of chalcopyrite concentrate at high pulp density.

Three kinds of samples (acid mine drainage, coal mine wastewater, and thermal spring) derived from different sites were collected in China. Thereafter, these samples were combined and then inoculated into a basal salts solution in which different substrates (ferrous sulfate, elemental sulfur, and chalcopyrite) served as energy sources. After that, the mixed cultures growing on different substrates were pooled equally, resulting in a final mixed culture. After being adapted to gradually increasing pulp densities of chalcopyrite concentrate by serial subculturing for more than 2 years, the final

Porphyromonas gingivalis as a potential community activist for disease.

An extensive analysis of dental plaque samples over the years has led to the identification of "red" complex oral bacteria that have a strong association with each other and with disease. Consequently, these bacteria have been labeled 'periopathogens'. Studies with one of these bacteria, Porphyromonas gingivalis, have revealed that it contains several different mechanisms which either impede or modulate periodontal protective mechanisms. In a mouse model of periodontitis, it has been shown that modulation of complement function by P. gingivalis facilitates a significant change in both the amou

Molecular insights into atmospheric methane-oxidizing USCγ from desert grassland soil based on metagenome-assembled genome analysis.

Upland Soil Cluster Gamma (USCγ) is a key high-affinity aerobic methanotroph driving atmospheric methane oxidation in grassland soils; however, it has never been obtained in pure culture, and its metabolic processes remain largely unknown. Here, we reconstructed a USCγ metagenome-assembled genome (MAG) containing the complete pmoA gene from desert grassland soil in northwestern China, designated USC_AKS. At the site, USCγ accounted for 9.83% of the microbial community in the 10-20 cm layer. BLASTn of its 16S rRNA gene against the NCBI database (excluding uncultured/environmental sequences) sho

Composition of the Intestinal Microbiota Determines the Outcome of Virus-Triggered Colitis in Mice.

The intestinal microbiota is a complex ecosystem implicated in host health and disease. Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a multifactorial chronic disorder of the gastrointestinal mucosa. Even though the exact mechanisms are still unknown, the intestinal microbiota is crucial in IBD development. We previously showed that murine norovirus (MNV) induces colitis in the Il10-deficient (Il10-/-) mouse model of IBD in a microbiota-dependent manner. Thus, in this study we analyzed whether distinct minimal bacterial consortia influence the outcome of MNV-triggered colitis in Il10-/- mice. Gnotobioti

Multiomics profiling of transcriptional and metabolic responses of Bacillus siamensis LSZ23 to corn straw.

Agricultural straw is an abundant yet underutilised lignocellulosic resource whose microbial valorisation requires cellulolytic strains that sustain enzyme production under substrate-imposed stress. Although Bacillus siamensis is valued for plant growth promotion and biocontrol, its lignocellulose-degrading capacity and regulation remain largely unexplored. B. siamensis LSZ23, isolated from humic soil in Inner Mongolia, China, produced a balanced cellulolytic system (CMCase 0.321, β-glucosidase 0.275, avicelase 0.240 and FPase 0.209 U/mL in 24 h LB culture) and reduced sterilised corn straw dr

Age-Related Differences in Oral Microbiota Among Obese Patients with Periodontitis: A Systematic Review.

Background: Obesity and periodontitis are linked through inflammatory and metabolic pathways, and the oral microbiota may mediate this interaction. Age-related changes in immunity, salivary function, and cumulative exposure may modify obesity-associated periodontal dysbiosis. Objective: We sought to synthesize the potential for age-related differences in the oral microbiota of adult obese patients with periodontitis and assess the strength of current literature in supporting age-specific interpretations. Methods: A systematic search of PubMed/MEDLINE, Scopus, and Embase identified 1088 records

Advancing Blueberry Postharvest Management: A Paradigm Shift From Pathogen Killing to Niche Occupancy.

Blueberries (Vaccinium spp.) are a high-value horticultural crop prized for their nutritional properties, particularly their high content of bioactive compounds such as anthocyanins and flavonoids, which confer antioxidant and anti-inflammatory benefits. However, their thin epidermis makes them highly susceptible to postharvest infections under humid conditions, with diseases caused by Botrytis cinerea and Colletotrichum spp. accounting for 20%-50% of total losses. Conventional chemical and cold storage strategies are increasingly constrained by resistance development, chemical residues, and l

Microbial Community Profile and Water Quality in a Protected Area of the Caatinga Biome.

The Caatinga is a semi-arid biome in northeast Brazil. The Paraguaçú River is located in the Caatinga biome, and part of its course is protected by the National Park of Chapada Diamantina (PNCD). In this study we evaluated the effect of PNCD protection on the water quality and microbial community diversity of this river by analyzing water samples obtained from points located inside and outside the PNCD in both wet and dry seasons. Results of water quality analysis showed higher levels of silicate, ammonia, particulate organic carbon, and nitrite in samples from the unprotected area compared wi

Subgingival biofilm structure.

Periodontitis is an inflammatory disease of the oral cavity initiated by a microbial biofilm (or 'dental plaque'). Subgingival biofilms in periodontal pockets are not easily analyzed without the loss of structural integrity. These subgingival plaques are structured communities of microorganisms with great phylogenetic diversity embedded in a self-produced extracellular polymeric matrix. For almost three decades, knowledge of the structure of plaque located below the gingival margin has been limited to landmark studies from the 1970s that were unaware of the breadth of microbial diversity we ap

Alleviating arsenic toxicity in Spinacia oleracea by modulating accumulation and speciation using fungal intergeneric fusant strains.

Protoplast fusion has potential for developing improved hybrid strains from genetically diverse fungal groups possessing different arsenic detoxification traits to combat as toxicity in crops. Arsenic (As) contamination of agricultural soil poses a threat to the agroecosystem and food safety. Fungal capacity to mitigate As toxicity (via biosorption, methylation, volatilization, and oxidation) could be enhanced through genetic improvement using protoplast fusion. Unlike conventional microbial consortia, protoplast fusion can produce stable fusants and may overcome incompatibility among strains,…
