Factors Associated with Micronutrient Intake of Low-Income Overweight or Obese Young Mothers.

We examined the proportion of the low-income overweight or obese mothers meeting micronutrient recommendations, and whether race, education and body mass index category (BMIc) were associated with micronutrient intake. This analysis included 198 women who completed a validated food frequency questionnaire. Micronutrients were grouped: antioxidant (vitamins A, C, and E, as well as copper, selenium, and zinc), methylation (vitamins B2, B3, B6, B9, and B12, and choline), bone health (vitamins D and K, calcium, magnesium, and phosphorus) and others (vitamin B1, iron, potassium, and sodium). We per…

Micronutrient status and risk of Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection in Indonesian tuberculosis case contacts.

BACKGROUND: Certain micronutrient levels have been associated with the risk of developing TB disease. We explored the possible association o … rsion (incidence rate ratio [IRR] for ferritin=1.17; 95% CI 1.01 to 1.35; p=0.03), but other select micronutrients were not. This association held for ferritin in the final multivariable model (IRR=1.27; 95% CI 1.09 to 1.47; p=0.002). CONCLUSIONS: The risk of developing M.tb infection, as defined by IGRA conversion, is associated with increasing ferritin. Inter …

Role of micronutrients in the symptoms of fibromyalgia: a review of the literature and analysis of an Italian female sample.

OBJECTIVE: Fibromyalgia (FM) is a multifactorial disease characterized principally by chronic, widespread pain impairing a patient's quality of life. The management of FM requires a multidisciplinary approach that combines pharmacological and non-pharmacological strategies. Growing evidence suggests a potential beneficial role of micronutrients such as minerals and vitamins. Overall, the role of these supplements remains controversial, but clinical trials on vitamin D, vitamin B12, magnesium, and iron supplementation seem to provide promising results. The aim of this study was to investigate t…

Relationship between overweight and obesity and insufficient micronutrient intake: a nationwide study in Taiwan.

The aim of the present study is to examine whether overweight or obese people in Taiwan have an inadequate intake of selected micronutrients. A population-based study was conducted using data from the Nutrition and Health Survey in Taiwan (NAHSIT) 2013-2016. We evaluated fourteen nutrient intakes using the 24 h dietary recall method. The dietary reference intake (DRI) adherence was estimated by the prevalence of participants whose intake was lower than the recommended dietary allowance (RDA) or adequate intakes (AIs) for selected micronutrients. Body mass index (BMI) ≥ 27 kg/m2 and waist circu…

[Conceptions in dispute in the use of micronutrient supplementation and/or fortification in school programs for prevention of anemia].

Iron deficiency anemia affects different populations worldwide, and in Brazil it is one of the principal childhood nutritional deficiencies. Different strategies have been proposed by international agencies and the Brazilian Ministry of Health for its prevention. The study aimed to analyze the ideas in dispute, expressed in official documents and narratives by health and education workers concerning the use of nutritional supplementation and/or fortification as a measure in schools to prevent anemia. The study was based on government documents and semi-structured interviews with workers in mun

A copula-based approach for creating an index of micronutrient intakes at household level in Pakistan.

Deficiency of micronutrients is considered as the basic cause of health issues. There are a large number of micronutrients to be considered for good health, which are analyzed separately. However, such analyses involve practical as well as methodological complications and it requires construction of an index representing malnutrition of micronutrients. This study proposes copula methodology to categorize malnutrition of micronutrients at household level by combining the dependence structure of various correlated variables. Data of eleven micronutrients are extracted from HIICS- 2015-16 publish…

Associations of the pre-pregnancy weight status with anaemia and the erythropoiesis-related micronutrient status.

OBJECTIVE: The coexistence of underweight (UW) and overweight (OW)/obese (OB) at the population level is known to affect iron deficiency (ID) anaemia (IDA), but how the weight status affects erythropoiesis during pregnancy is less clear at a population scale. This study investigated associations between the pre-pregnancy BMI (pBMI) and erythropoiesis-related nutritional deficiencies. DESIGN: Anthropometry, blood biochemistry and 24-h dietary recall data were collected during prenatal care visits. The weight status was defined based on the pBMI. Mild nutrition deficiency-related erythropoiesis

New Evidence Should Inform WHO Guidelines on Multiple Micronutrient Supplementation in Pregnancy.

Recent data from an individual patient data (IPD) meta-analysis of 17 randomized control trials including >100,000 women living in low- and middle-income countries found that multiple micronutrient supplementation (MMS) in pregnancy reduced the risk of low birth weight, preterm birth, and being born small for gestational age. Further, MMS reduced the risk of neonatal and infant mortality for females, and there was no evidence of increased risk among the 26 subgroups examined. The 2016 WHO antenatal care guidelines, which were released before the IPD meta-analysis, did not universally recommend
