This scanning electron microscope (SEM) study of secretory- and transitional-stage enamel organ cells of the permanent dentition of Macaca mulatta and Macaca arctoides was undertaken because the topography of these cells in primates has not been described in the literature. This study presents the morphological sequence of events in initial blood clot formation on various root surfaces of freshly extracted human teeth. Four teeth with periodontal disease (PD) and three teeth without PD were extracted and the roots sectioned into halves. Recent reports have documented human parvovirus B19 infection in pregnancy, which may lead to spontaneous abortion, stillbirth or hydrops fetalis. A patient who repeatedly produced urinary calculi, had consumed about 3 g of cristobalite (SiO2) per day for many years. Investigations using scanning electron microscopy revealed minute particles containing silicon in the core of the stone as well as in urine sediment. A mechanism similar to that proposed for the effect of silicon-containing drugs against gastric ulcer, may play a role in this formation of silicon-containing urinary stones.

This article reviews the applications of SEM methods to human bone pathologies referring to studies made at UCL. Vascular casts of the human lamina cribrosa region were studied in three autopsy specimens utilizing scanning electron microscopy (S.E.M.) in own modified technique. The lamina cribrosa is supplied from two major sources, the short posterior ciliary artery within the sclera and the distal optic nerve sheath pial vasculature. A case of Leydig cell tumor is reported and discussed. The tumor, 1.5 cm in diameter, was located in the capsule of the right testis. Gynecomastia present for 3 months was almost absent 4 months postoperatively. Preoperative hormone analysis revealed a low concentration of serum testosterone, which was normalized 1 week postoperatively. In electron microscopic examination, several intracytoplasmic microbody-like structures and 'tigroid' mitochondria were noted. These findings are similar to the three earlier descriptions of Leydig cell tumors.

Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever (CCHF) virus was isolated for the first time in Iraq from the blood of three patients. It caused a cytopathic effect in lamb kidney and BHK-21 cell cultures. The virus particles were spherical, enveloped and had 90 nm in diameter similar particles were found in ultrathin sections of the liver from two fatal cases. The isolated virus proved to be antigenically closely related to CCHF virus.

Brains from three human cases of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease and three monkey cases of transmitted Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease were examined. The ciliary processes of 26 male Wistar rats that survived a prolonged period of immunization with bovine serum albumin (BSA) and a similar number of age- and sex-matched controls were studied by immunofluorescence and electron microscopy.
