HIV Transmission Worry Predicts Discrimination Intentions Among Nursing Students and Ward Staff in India.

Health facility stigma impedes HIV care and treatment. Worry of contracting HIV while caring for people living with HIV is a key driver of health facility stigma, however evidence for this relationship is largely cross-sectional. This study evaluates this relationship longitudinally amongst nursing students and ward staff in India. Worry of contracting HIV and other known predictors of intent to discriminate were collected at baseline and 6 months in 916 nursing students and 747 ward staff. Using fixed effects regression models, we assessed the effect of key predictors on intent to discriminat

Hip and other osteoporotic fractures increase the risk of subsequent fractures in nursing home residents.

UNLABELLED: Nursing home residents with a history of hip fractures or prior osteoporotic fractures were found to have an increased risk of another osteoporotic fracture over the ensuing two years when compared to nursing home residents with no fracture history. INTRODUCTION: Because of the high prevalence of osteoporosis and fall risk factors in nursing home residents, it is possible that the importance of previous fracture as a marker for subsequent fracture risk may be diminished. We tested whether a history of prior osteoporotic fractures would identify residents at increased risk of addit

Pharmacokinetics and Saturable Absorption of Gabapentin in Nursing Home Elderly Patients.

Pharmacokinetic data of gabapentin (GBP) in community-dwelling elderly patients show a significant effect of advanced age on GBP pharmacokinetics due to altered renal function. However, there are no data in elderly nursing home (NH) patients to evaluate gabapentin absorption and elimination. Our objective was to characterize the pharmacokinetics of GBP in elderly nursing home patients maintained on GBP therapy. This was a prospective pharmacokinetic study in elderly nursing home patients (≥60 years) receiving GBP for the management of chronic pain or epilepsy from seven nursing homes. Pharmaco

Self-management of unpleasant auditory hallucinations: a tested practice model.

Individuals who experience auditory hallucinations (AH) frequently report hearing unpleasant voices saying disturbing things to them, making derogatory remarks about them, or commanding them to do something, including harming themselves or someone else. The Self-Management of Unpleasant Auditory Hallucinations Practice Model was developed to help psychiatric-mental health nurses in both inpatient and outpatient settings implement evidence-based nursing care for voice hearers who are distressed by unpleasant voices. The model's utility extends to nursing education, administration, and research.

Staffing and Antipsychotic Medication Use in Nursing Homes and Neighborhood Deprivation.

IMPORTANCE: Inappropriate use of antipsychotic medications in nursing homes is a growing public health concern. Residents exposed to higher levels of socioeconomic deprivation in the area around a nursing home may be currently exposed, or have a long history of exposure, to more noise pollution, higher crime rates, and have less opportunities to safely go outside the facility, which may contribute to psychological stress and increased risk of receiving antipsychotic medications inappropriately. However, it is unclear whether neighborhood deprivation is associated with use of inappropriate anti

Improvising through ambiguity: Jazz leadership principles for nurse leaders.

This article examines how principles of jazz (improvisation within structure, shared leadership rooted in mutual respect, and embracing mistakes and ambiguity) can inform effective nursing leadership. In increasingly complex health care environments, traditional hierarchical models limit adaptability, whereas a "jazz leadership" approach fosters collaboration, creativity, and resilience. Drawing parallels between jazz ensembles and nursing teams, the author highlights strategies to enhance decision-making, innovation, and succession planning. By cultivating psychological safety, distributed le

Music therapy: harmony for change.

1. Music can be an effective treatment modality for low-functioning clients. With psychiatric clients, music can strengthen ego, increase socialization, decrease psychotic symptoms, and increase activity. 2. In general, music was applied to manage the clients' focal, contextual, or residual stimuli. By directing the use of music at the influencing stimuli, the stimuli was removed, increased, decreased, or altered, thereby changing the clients' ineffective behavior or ability to cope. 3. The music program has proved most effective with clients diagnosed with organic brain damage, mild to modera

Rethinking nursing faculty workforce economics: From single-income appointments to portfolio-based academic roles.

The United States nursing faculty shortage is commonly framed as a shortage of qualified educators caused by inadequate salaries. In 2025, nursing schools reported 1,588 full-time faculty vacancies and turned away 92,672 qualified applications from baccalaureate and graduate programs. This structured analytic essay argues that the nursing faculty shortage is also a labor-participation problem: terminally prepared nurses may be qualified for academic roles but unwilling to accept the compensation, workload, and professional constraints of faculty employment. Drawing on workforce data, research,

Moving to and dying in a nursing home depends not only on health - an analysis of socio-demographic determinants of place of death in Switzerland.

BACKGROUND: In developed countries generally about 7 out of 10 deaths occur in institutions such as acute care hospitals or nursing homes. However, less is known about the influence of non-medical determinants of place of death. This study examines the influence of socio-demographic and regional factors on place of death in Switzerland. DATA AND METHODS: We linked individual data from hospitals and nursing homes with census and mortality records of the Swiss general population. We differentiated between those who died in a hospital after a length of stay ≤2 days or ≥3 days, those who died in
