Time Interval Ray Tracing for Motion Blur.

We introduce a new motion blur computation method for ray tracing that provides an analytical approximation of motion blurred visibility per ray. Rather than relying on timestamped rays and Monte Carlo sampling to resolve the motion blur, we associate a time interval with rays and directly evaluate when and where each ray intersects with animated object faces. Based on our simplifications, the volume swept by each animated face is represented using a triangulation of the surface of this volume. Thus, we can resolve motion blur through ray intersections with stationary triangles, and we can use…

Spinal motion preservation surgery: indications and applications.

Fusion is one of the most commonly performed spinal procedures, indicated for a wide range of spinal problems. Elimination of motion though results in accelerated degeneration of the adjacent level, known as adjacent level disease. Motion preservation surgical methods were developed in order to overcome this complication. These methods include total disc replacement, laminoplasty, interspinous implants and dynamic posterior stabilization systems. The initial enthusiasm about these methods was followed by certain concerns about their clinical usefulness and their results. The main indications f…

Action can amplify motion-induced illusory displacement.

Local motion is known to produce strong illusory displacement in the perceived position of globally static objects. For example, if a dot-cloud or grating drifts to the left within a stationary aperture, the perceived position of the whole aperture will also be shifted to the left. Previously, we used a simple tracking task to demonstrate that active control over the global position of an object did not eliminate this form of illusion. Here, we used a new iPad task to directly compare the magnitude of illusory displacement under active and passive conditions. In the active condition, participa…

Motion parallax thresholds for unambiguous depth perception.

The perception of unambiguous depth from motion parallax arises from the neural integration of retinal image motion and extra-retinal eye movement signals. It is only recently that these parameters have been articulated in the form of the motion/pursuit ratio. In the current study, we explored the lower limits of the parameter space in which observers could accurately perform near/far relative depth-sign discriminations for a translating random-dot stimulus. Stationary observers pursued a translating random dot stimulus containing relative image motion. Their task was to indicate the location …

Motion sickness: more than nausea and vomiting.

Motion sickness is a complex syndrome that includes many features besides nausea and vomiting. This review describes some of these factors and points out that under normal circumstances, many cases of motion sickness go unrecognized. Motion sickness can occur during exposure to physical motion, visual motion, and virtual motion, and only those without a functioning vestibular system are fully immune. The range of vulnerability in the normal population varies about 10,000 to 1. Sleep deprivation can also enhance susceptibility. Systematic studies conducted in parabolic flight have identified ve…

Motion sickness in rally car co-drivers.

BACKGROUND: Car sickness is a frequent and potentially disabling problem, commonly related to a theory of sensory conflict, in particular visuo-vestibular, and between actual and anticipated sensory signals. This study aimed to evaluate predictors of motion sickness (MS) in rally car co-drivers exposed to various accelerations. METHODS: The subjects were 85 rally co-drivers (21 women) who filled in a questionnaire investigating MS symptoms in 4 situations: 1) special stages (competition itself); 2) special stages reconnaissance; 3) reading a book in the car; and 4) rear-seat passenger. The ma…

Vestibular functions in motion sickness susceptible individuals.

There exists no functional guide that can serve as a diagnostic tool for individual susceptibility to motion sickness (MS). We evaluated vestibular system functioning via a caloric test (which assesses functioning of the superior vestibular nerve) and the vestibular-evoked myogenic potentials (VEMP) test (which assesses inferior vestibular nerve functioning) in 20 MS susceptible and 20 nonsusceptible individuals. Susceptibility to MS was determined by self-declaration and with MS susceptibility questionnaire and Hamilton Anxiety Scale (HAS). We found statistically significant differences for s…

Performance and autonomic responses during motion sickness.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to investigate how motion sickness, triggered by an optokinetic drum, affects short-term memory performance and to explore autonomic responses to perceived motion sickness. BACKGROUND: Previous research has found that motion sickness decreases performance, but it is not known how short-term memory in particular is affected. METHOD: Thirty-eight healthy participants performed a listening span test while seated in a rotating optokinetic drum. Measurements of motion sickness, performance, heart rate, skin conductance, blood volume pulse, and pupil size were p…

Leftward motion restores number space in neglect.

In the present study, a group of patients with left-sided neglect performed a number comparison task that co-occurred either with coherent motion in different directions or with random motion. Their performance was compared to that of a healthy control group and to a group of patients with right hemisphere damage (RHD) but no signs of neglect. The presence of leftward motion alleviated the difficulties that neglect patients typically show for a number smaller than the reference number 5 (i.e., number 4). Moreover, the standard distance effect was only present when the task co-occurred with lef…

Gamma oscillations underlying the visual motion aftereffect.

After having been exposed to strong visual motion in one direction, a subsequently presented stationary visual scene seems to move in the opposite direction. This motion aftereffect (MAE) is usually ascribed to short-term functional changes in cortical areas involved in visual motion analysis akin to adaptation. Using magnetoencephalography (MEG), we show increased global field activity due to the MAE which could mostly be explained by a dipole located near the putative location of human area MT+. We further demonstrate that the induced MAE is accompanied by a significant increase in gamma-ban…

Motion aftereffect elicits smooth pursuit eye movements.

A moving stimulus is normally required to elicit smooth pursuit eye movements that serve to keep the retinal image of moving objects on the fovea. Recent experiments have shown that in cases where motion cues are ambiguous, pursuit eye movements tend to agree in direction and speed with the percept of motion. Here, we exploit the motion aftereffect (MAE) to show for the first time that smooth pursuit eye movements can also be elicited by the illusory motion of a stationary stimulus. After prolonged exposure to a moving stimulus, subjects show reliable pursuit of a physically stationary stimulu…

Neural correlates of coherent audiovisual motion perception.

Real-life moving objects are often detected by multisensory cues. We investigated the cortical activity associated with coherent visual motion perception in the presence of a stationary or moving auditory noise source using functional magnetic resonance imaging. Twelve subjects judged episodes of 5-s random-dot motion containing either no (0%) or abundant (16%) coherent direction information. Auditory noise was presented with the displayed visual motion that was moving in phase, was moving out-of-phase, or was stationary. Subjects judged whether visual coherent motion was present, and if so, w…

Space motion sickness: incidence, etiology, and countermeasures.

Space motion sickness is experienced by 60% to 80% of space travelers during their first 2 to 3 days in microgravity and by a similar proportion during their first few days after return to Earth. Space motion sickness symptoms are similar to those in other forms of motion sickness; they include: pallor, increased body warmth, cold sweating, malaise, loss of appetite, nausea, fatigue, vomiting, and anorexia. These are important because they may affect the operational performance of astronauts. Two hypotheses have been proposed to explain space motion sickness: the fluid shift hypothesis and the…

Paradoxical vocal cord motion--a case report.

Paradoxical vocal cord motion (PVCM) is an unusual cause of stridor, which is associated with some underlying causes, such as central nervous system lesion, gastroesophageal reflux or psychogenic problem. Once a diagnosis of PVCM is made, acute management with reassurance and sedation instead of aggressive airway intervention is required. Speech therapy, psychotherapy combination with anti-reflux medication is considered to be useful in long-term management. We present a 58 year-old male patient who had suffered from several episodes of acute onset of stridor, short of breath and tachypnea sin…

Vector analysis of electrogastrography during motion sickness.

Although the dominant frequency at 3 cpm of electrogastrography (EGG) is reported to shift to a higher frequency during motion sickness (MS), it is unclear whether the normal slow wave (NSW) disappears or not. The authors investigated changes in NSW using vector analysis of EGG. Fourteen subjects were exposed to a Coriolis stimulation to evoke MS. EGG was recorded from two sets of bipolar leads, placed perpendicular to each other representing x and y axes. Trajectories for each frequency were drawn on the x-y plane. The amplitude and phase difference at NSW were compared before, during, and af…

Coherent motion pops out during smooth pursuit.

Stimulus motion is a prominent feature that is used by the visual system to segment figure from ground and perceptually bind widely separated objects. Pursuit eye movements can be influenced by such perceptual grouping processes. We have examined the subjects' ability to detect small amounts of coherent motion in random dot kinematograms during pursuit. We compared performance on tests of coherent motion perception while subjects fixated a stationary spot or while they tracked a moving target. The results indicate that smooth pursuit can improve subjects' ability to detect the presence of cohe…

Spatial property of motion visual evoked potentials.

The cortical evoked response to drifting patterns (motion visual evoked potentials) was investigated. When the direction of motion of the stimulus pattern was reversed upward or downward at intervals, the cortical evoked response was triggered at the moment when the pattern changed direction. The polarity reversal of the main negative component occurred between upper and lower visual field stimulations as seen in pattern reversal visual evoked potentials. Our study indicates these potentials have a compound property reflecting the visual field.

Early protected motion after extensor tendon repair.

Thirty hands with 50 extensor tendon lacerations, excluding mallet finger injuries, were examined. They were treated with surgical repair followed by immediate motion which included a dynamic splinting and tendon mobilization program. The average follow-up period was 7 months (range, 8 weeks to 2 years). Forty-five of the 50 tendons regained full range of motion (average total active motion, 262 degrees) within an average time of 9 weeks; the remaining 5 tendons had extension lags of < or = 10 degrees. All patients regained at least 93% of their predicted normal strength within 9 to 12 weeks a…
