Editorial Commentary: Symptomatic Femoroacetabular Impingement Resulting in Severe Hip Osteoarthritis: Predicting the "Perfect Storm".

In the last 20 years, femoroacetabular impingement (FAI) has transitioned from a disputed disease to a well-established cause of hip pain and osteoarthritis (OA). Cam-type FAI, specifically, is supported by several studies as a risk factor for osteoarthritis. Elevated α-angle is also a mild-to-moderate risk factor for OA in patients with FAI. Other risk factors include age, sex, body mass index, activity level, range of motion, 3D acetabular and femoral morphology, and femoral version. To further complicate the picture, when we look at the contralateral hip (where many of these factors are hel

Molecular Dynamics Simulations of Quinolone Resistance-Associated T86I and P104S Mutations in Campylobacter jejuni gyrA: Unraveling Structural Repercussions.

gyrA is a clinically validated therapeutic drug target that catalyzes changes in DNA topology by introducing negative supercoils into DNA. The broad-spectrum quinolones are hitherto the most potent antibacterial agents targeted toward gyrA. Increasing resistance to quinolones is accompanied by several mutations in the quinolone resistance-determining region of gyrA. In the present study, we report a comprehensive picture of the dynamic behavior of wild-type, T86I, and T86I/P104S mutants (MTs) of gyrA from Campylobacter jejuni in complex with ciprofloxacin to unravel the atomistic details of th

Cyclic appearance of left ventricular outflow tract dynamic obstruction during mechanical ventilation: evidence for a preload dependent phenomenon.

The cyclic appearance of dynamic left ventricular outflow tract obstruction during mechanical ventilation, according to the phasic changes in preload, is described in this article. Hemodialysis-induced fluid removal resulted in preload dependence as evidenced by the pulse pressure variation in a 56-year-old critically ill patient. The clinical picture was suggestive of myocardial failure. Transthoracic echocardiography disclosed dynamic left ventricular outflow tract obstruction associated with systolic anterior motion of the mitral valve. Progressive fluid restitution resulted in a parallel d

No Evidence of Reactive Avoidance of Baboons (Papio ursinus and Papio anubis) to the Presence of Predators.

Predators exert strong selective pressure on prey species, shaping their behavioral adaptations. Prey species use proactive responses, such as site selection and the adjustment of daily activity patterns to anticipate and avoid predation exposure. In contrast, reactive responses, including fleeing, referential signaling, and retaliation, occur after encountering a predator to mitigate the immediate predation risk. The presence of a predator in an area can also generate longer-term responses, such as reactive avoidance, defined here as the temporary avoidance of the area following the passage o

Glass transition of polymers in bulk, confined geometries, and near interfaces.

When cooled or pressurized, polymer melts exhibit a tremendous reduction in molecular mobility. If the process is performed at a constant rate, the structural relaxation time of the liquid eventually exceeds the time allowed for equilibration. This brings the system out of equilibrium, and the liquid is operationally defined as a glass-a solid lacking long-range order. Despite almost 100 years of research on the (liquid/)glass transition, it is not yet clear which molecular mechanisms are responsible for the unique slow-down in molecular dynamics. In this review, we first introduce the reader

Saddle pressure patterns of three different training saddles (normal tree, flexible tree, treeless) in Thoroughbred racehorses at trot and gallop.

REASONS FOR PERFORMING STUDY: To a large extent the success of a racehorse depends on effective and health preserving training methods. An important issue is the prevention of back pain. The influence of different types of training saddles (normal tree: S(A), treeless: S(B), flexible tree: S(C)) on the saddle pressure patterns in racehorses have not previously been investigated. It is commonly assumed that S(A) limits the motion of the back especially in the lower thoracic region during gallop. HYPOTHESIS: S(A) produces higher pressures in the caudal part of the saddle at trot (rising trot),

Engaging Children in Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) Development: Utilizing an Interactive iPad Tool to Capture Picture-Based P300-Based BCI Augmentative and Alternative Communication Design Preferences.

INTRODUCTION: P300-based brain-computer interface augmentative and alternative communication (P300-BCI-AAC) systems show promise for supporting communication for children with severe speech and physical impairments. However, little is known about how children prefer these displays to be designed. This study examined children's design choices and the rationales guiding those choices to inform the development of user-centered, pediatric BCI-AAC displays. METHOD: Thirty-eight typically developing children (8-12 years of age) used a P300-BCI-AAC design application to create their preferred pictur

Free-Breathing High-Resolution, Swap-Free, and Motion-Corrected Water/Fat Separation in Pediatric Abdominal MRI.

OBJECTIVES: The T1-weighted GRE (gradient recalled echo) sequence with the Dixon technique for water/fat separation is an essential component of abdominal MRI (magnetic resonance imaging), useful in detecting tumors and characterizing hemorrhage/fat content. Unfortunately, the current implementation of this sequence suffers from several problems: (1) low resolution to maintain high pixel bandwidth and minimize chemical shift; (2) image blurring due to respiratory motion; (3) water/fat swapping due to the natural ambiguity between fat and water peaks; and (4) off-resonance fat blurring due to t

Frequency and clinical expression of cardiac troponin I mutations in 748 consecutive families with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to evaluate the potential utility of genetic diagnosis in clinical management of families with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) caused by mutations in the gene for cardiac troponin I (TNNI3). BACKGROUND: Knowledge about the clinical disease expression of sarcomeric gene mutations in HCM has predominantly been obtained by investigations of single individuals (probands) or selected families. To establish the role of genetic diagnosis in HCM families, systematic investigations of probands and their relatives are needed. METHODS: Cardiac troponin I was inve

Noninvasive determination of left ventricular output and wall stress in volume overload and in myocardial disease by cine magnetic resonance imaging.

The current study used cine magnetic resonance imaging to determine the effect of increasing severity of valvular regurgitation on systolic wall stress and to demonstrate that wall stress was disproportionately increased in relation to the severity of regurgitation in patients with myocardial disease. A total of 39 patients with predominantly mitral (n = 22) or aortic (n = 17) regurgitation with (n = 13) and without (n = 26) myocardial disease and 10 normal volunteers were examined with cine magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) at 1.5 T. A Case-Control Study to Identify Community Venues Associated with Genetically-clustered, Multidrug-resistant Tuberculosis Disease in Lima, Peru.

BACKGROUND: The majority of tuberculosis transmission occurs in community settings. Our primary aim in this study was to assess the association between exposure to community venues and multidrug-resistant (MDR) tuberculosis. Our secondary aim was to describe the social networks of MDR tuberculosis cases and controls. METHODS: We recruited laboratory-confirmed MDR tuberculosis cases and community controls that were matched on age and sex. Whole-genome sequencing was used to identify genetically clustered cases. Venue tracing interviews (nonblinded) were conducted to enumerate community venues

What things make people with a learning disability happy and satisfied with their lives: an inclusive research project.

BACKGROUND: We looked at the research that other people have done about what makes people with a learning disability happy and satisfied with their lives. Researchers call being happy and satisfied with your life 'subjective well-being'. They found out that having things like money and good health does not always mean people are happy. They also found that some people are really happy, even if there are things in their lives they would like to change. None of the people who have done research about 'subjective well-being' have interviewed people with a learning disability about what makes them

The prediction of lumbar spine geometry: method development and validation.

OBJECTIVES: To develop and validate a new method of predicting the neutral lumbar spine curve from external (non-invasive electrogoniometer) measurements. BACKGROUND: Non-invasive techniques for lumbar spine geometry prediction suffer from a lack of a complete geometry description, problems with applicability to field conditions, or both. METHODS: The study consisted of three steps. First, utilizing lateral imaging (MRI and X-ray pictures) of the lumbosacral junction, the torso geometry was described using measures of lumbar lordosis via the Cobb method. Second, the relationship between imag

Revisiting the benzene excimer using [2,2] paracyclophane model system: Experiment and theory.

We report high-level calculations of the excited states of [2,2]-paracyclophane (PCP), which was recently investigated experimentally by ultrafast pump-probe experiments on oriented single crystals [Haggag et al., ChemPhotoChem 6 e202200181 (2022)]. PCP, in which the orientation of the two benzene rings and their range of motion are constrained, serves as a model for studying benzene excimer formation. The character of the excimer state and the state responsible for the brightest transition are similar to those of the benzene dimer. The constrained structure of PCP allows one to focus on the m

Development and evaluation of a new gray-scale test pattern to adjust gradients of thoracic CT imaging.

The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the usefulness of a new gray-scale test pattern (NGTP) that was developed to easily adjust the gradients of thoracic CT imaging and enable visual consistency. The Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE) pattern and the NGTP were used for comparison. The luminance character of two test patterns was evaluated by a luminance meter with three different window widths and levels (for default, mediastinum and lung). We also investigated whether SMPTE or NGTP is more suitable for adjusting the gradient of thoracic CT imaging. We found

Functional MRI in neonates using neonatal head coil and MR compatible incubator.

Structural and functional magnetic resonance imaging of the newborn brain is a complex and challenging task. Term and preterm neonates require a controlled microenvironment and close monitoring during the MRI study to maintain respiratory and cardiovascular functions, body temperature, and fluid and electrolyte homeostasis. In addition, to minimize motion artifacts, most neonates also need to be sedated, which carries the risk of respiratory depression compromising the neonate's ability to maintain appropriate ventilation and oxygenation during the procedure. Finally, because of their small he

Results of the original Putti-Platt procedure for shoulder instability: review of Putti's scholar experience.

Twenty patients who underwent Putti-Platt shoulder capsulorraphy were retrospectively evaluated at long-term follow-up (24-34 years). The aim of this study was to analyse the efficacy and possible degenerative changes associated with this procedure. Patients' charts were reviewed to analyse the pre-operative picture, surgical technique and post-operative program. All patients were re-examined using ASES, Rowe and Lysholm scales. Range of movement (ROM) of the shoulder operated on was compared with the non-operated one. A-P, axillary and outlet views were taken for radiographic control. Samilso

Posttraumatic cervical dystonia.

Posttraumatic cervical dystonia has been described as a distinct syndrome with some similarities to idiopathic nontraumatic cervical dystonia (torticollis). We describe five patients in whom cervical dystonia developed immediately after relatively mild trauma to the neck. Four of the five patients had persistent contractions of all cervical muscles including the trapezius muscles, which almost completely prevented motion of the neck and resulted in muscle hypertrophy. The condition persisted unabated in all patients for the entire period of follow-up (duration, 1 1/2 to 3 years). Pharmaceutica
