Systematic review and meta-analysis of efficacy of helmet use and helmet laws to reduce mortality and cervical spine injury in adult motorcycle riders: A practice management guideline from the Eastern Association for the Surgery of Trauma.

BACKGROUND: Motorcycle crash fatalities remain a significant public health concern. Traumatic brain injury is a leading cause of death following motorcycle crash. We aim to provide evidence-based guidelines pertaining to helmet use and helmet laws with respect to important outcomes including mortality, cervical spine injury, and discharge disposition. METHODS: An evidence-based systematic review was performed to answer the following Population, Intervention, Comparator, Outcomes (PICO) questions: PICO 1-Should adult motorcycle riders wear helmets or not wear helmets to improve mortality, brai

Real-time conflict risk at signalized intersection using drone video: A random parameters logit model with heterogeneity in means and variances.

Signalized intersections are crash prone. This can be attributed to driver errors, red light running behaviour, and poor coordination of conflicting traffic. It is anticipated that overall crash risk at signalized intersection would increase when mixed traffic like motorcycles is involved. In this study, a real-time prediction model for motorcycle and non-motorcycle involved conflict risk at the signalized intersection is proposed. For example, high-resolution vehicle and motorcycle trajectory data are extracted from drone videos using advanced computer vision techniques. Additionally, conflic…

A Motorcyclist-Injury Severity Analysis: A Comparison of Single-, Two-, and Multi-Vehicle Crashes Using Latent Class Ordered Probit Model.

Motorcycle crashes increasingly become a high proportion of the overall motorized vehicle fatalities. However, limited research has been conducted to compare the injury severity of single-, two- and multi-vehicle crashes involving a motorcycle. This study aims to investigate the effects of rider characteristics, road conditions, pre-crash situations, and crash features on motorcycle severities with respect to different numbers of vehicles involved. The crash data used was obtained through a comprehensive Motorcycle Crash Causation Study (MCCS) by the Federal Highway Administration. An anatomic

Motorcyclist rear brake simple perception-response times in rear-end collision situations.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to determine the baseline motorcycle riders' perception-response times (PRTs) in an expected object braking task and to determine the significant difference between PRTs of older and younger riders. METHODS: Fifty-nine participants sat on their motorcycles in exactly the same way as they would when riding and then they awaited activation of the taillights of the passenger car (parked) in front of them. PRTs of the motorcyclists were transcribed from the camcorder when the riders hit the brakes as quickly as possible following the activation of the car'…

Using baseline and formative evaluation data to inform the Uganda Helmet Vaccine Initiative.

Motorcycles are an important form of transportation in Uganda, and are involved in more road traffic injuries than any other vehicle. The majority of motorcycles in Uganda are used as motorcycle taxis, better known locally as boda bodas. Research shows that a motorcycle helmet is effective at reducing a rider's risk of death and head injury. As part of the Uganda Helmet Vaccine Initiative (UHVI), researchers collected baseline and formative evaluation data on boda boda operators' helmet attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors to inform UHVI activities. Researchers collected data on motorcycle helmet…

Mode choice model for vulnerable motorcyclists in Malaysia.

OBJECTIVE: In developing countries, motorcycle use has grown in popularity in the past decades. Commensurate with this growth is the increase in death and casualties among motorcyclists in these countries. One of the strategic programs to minimize this problem is to reduce motorcyclists exposure by shifting them into safer modes of transport. This study aims to explore the differences in the characteristics of bus and motorcycle users. It identifies the factors contributing to their choice of transport mode and estimates the probability that motorcyclists might change their travel mode to a sa

Identifying environmental factors related to motorcyclist crash rates: variable selection using spatial Random Forest with network distance and barriers.

Motorcycle crashes remain a major global safety concern, particularly in many Asian countries where motorcycles are the primary mode of transportation. While previous studies have identified factors associated with motorcycle crashes using traditional variable selection methods, they often overlook spatial patterns and contextual constraints (such as motorcycles being prohibited from freeways), leading to lower model accuracy. To address this limitation, we introduce a novel variable selection framework, designated as Spatial Random Forest with Network Distance and Barriers (spatialRF-NDBAR), …

Moped collisions among patients with revoked drivers' licenses are a significant public health problem: a retrospective cohort study.

Many states do not require a license to operate a moped, defined as a motor vehicle with less than 50-cc engine displacement. These vehicles may therefore serve as a mode of transportation for those who are driving without a license and who may have a history of prior high-risk behavior. We hypothesized that those involved in moped collisions were more likely to have previous convictions for driving while intoxicated (DWI) and other non-DWI offenses than those on conventional motorcycles. At a Level I trauma center, we queried the trauma registry from January 2005 to October 2010 for admission…
