Effect of Fatigue Protocols on Upper Extremity Neuromuscular Function and Implications for Ulnar Collateral Ligament Injury Prevention.

BACKGROUND: As the incidence of overuse injuries to the medial elbow in overhead athletes continues to rise, recent evidence suggests a link between these injuries and alterations in biomechanics produced by athlete fatigue. Previous studies have evaluated the effect of fatigue on elbow injuries using a wide array of fatigue protocols/athletic tasks, and, as a consequence, the results have been heterogeneous. PURPOSE: To determine whether there is a uniform alteration in neuromuscular function or biomechanics as the overhead athlete fatigues. Furthermore, this study sought to determine whethe

A case report of semaglutide induced sarcopenia: causes of fatigue in older adults.

Semaglutide, a medication used for type 2 diabetes and weight loss, may have unexpected side effects such as sarcopenia and age-related loss of muscle mass and strength. A 74-year-old male patient with type 2 diabetes and dyslipidemia presented with progressive fatigue over 2 years. He experienced a significant decline in walking endurance and speed despite the absence of joint pain or other obvious causes. He had a history of ocular myasthenia gravis and localized prostate cancer, both of which were well-managed. Further investigation revealed a weight loss of 8 kg after starting semaglutide

Ginseng alleviates fatigue by inhibiting autophagy via activation of the PI3K/AKT/mTOR signaling pathway.

BACKGROUND: Panax ginseng C. A. Mey. (PG) is a commonly used traditional Chinese medicine to relieve fatigue-related symptoms. However, the underlying mechanisms by which PG alleviates fatigue are still not fully understood. This study aims to elucidate the anti-fatigue mechanism of PG in a hyperammonemia induced fatigue mouse model. METHODS: The therapeutic effects of PG on hyperammonemia-induced fatigue mice were evaluated using behavioral assessments, including rotarod, open field, grip strength, and tail suspension tests, along with serum biochemical analysis and hematoxylin-eosin (HE) st

Can infrared thermography serve as an alternative to assess cumulative fatigue in women?

Muscle fatigue can limit performance both in sports and daily life activities. Consecutive days of exercise without a proper recovery time may elicit cumulative fatigue. Although it has been speculated that skin temperature could serve as an indirect indicator of exercise-induced adaptations, it is unclear if skin temperature measured by infrared thermography (IRT) could be an outcome related to the effects of cumulative fatigue. In this study, we recruited 21 untrained women and induced cumulative fatigue in biceps brachii over two consecutive days of exercise. We measured delayed onset muscl…

Progressive Resistance Training Improves Torque Capacity and Strength in Mobility-Limited Older Adults.

BACKGROUND: Progressive resistance training (PRT) is consistently shown to improve muscle strength in older adults. The efficacy of PRT to improve muscle fatigue in older adults with demonstrated mobility limitations remains unclear. METHODS: Mobility-limited (Short Physical Performance Battery [SPPB] ≤ 9) older adults (age 70-92 years) were recruited for this study and randomized to either PRT or home-based flexibility (FLEX) 3 d/wk for 12 weeks. Muscle fatigue and strength outcomes were assessed at baseline and 12 weeks. The primary outcome was torque capacity, a composite measure of streng…

Respiratory muscle fibres: specialisation and plasticity.

Skeletal muscles are composed of fibres of different types, each type being identified by the isoform of myosin heavy chain which is expressed as slow 1, fast 2A, fast 2X, and fast 2B. Slow fibres are resistant to fatigue due to their highly oxidative metabolism whereas 2X and 2B fibres are easily fatiguable and fast 2A fibres exhibit intermediate fatigue resistance. Slow fibres and fast fibres are present in equal proportions in the adult human diaphragm while intercostal muscles contain a higher proportion of fast fibres. A small fibre size, abundance of capillaries, and a high aerobic oxida

Sex-specific effects of fatiguing handgrip plus blood flow restriction on upper limb neuromuscular characteristics during a repetitive shoulder height task.

Blood flow restriction (BFR) aims to accelerate reperfusion post-effort and could provide benefits after shoulder fatiguing work. However, sex-specific effects of localized BFR on whole-limb features are unknown. Ten females and eleven males performed three 30-second repetitive pointing tasks (RPTs) (pre-fatigue, post-fatigue, and recovery). The fatiguing protocol was an intermittent submaximal handgrip task performed until failure to meet the target force (50% of maximum grip strength). Participants completed two sessions: without BFR and with 50% BFR applied to the upper arm during the handg

Post-polio syndrome patients treated with intravenous immunoglobulin: a double-blinded randomized controlled pilot study.

Post-polio syndrome (PPS) is characterized by new muscle weakness, atrophy, fatigue and pain developing several years after the acute polio. Some studies suggest an ongoing inflammation in the spinal cord in these patients. From this perspective, intravenous immunoglobulin (IvIg) could be a therapeutic option. We performed a double-blinded randomized controlled pilot study with 20 patients to investigate the possible clinical effects of IvIg in PPS. Twenty patients were randomized to either IvIg 2 g/kg body weight or placebo. Primary endpoints were changes in pain, fatigue and muscle strength

Is there a difference in knee biomechanics due to fatigue of the quadriceps versus hamstrings during landing on a single limb? a randomized comparative laboratory study.

BACKGROUND: The quadriceps and hamstring muscles play a central role in absorbing impact forces and maintaining dynamic knee stability during landing tasks. Together, these muscle groups also strongly influence knee joint kinematics and kinetics. This study aimed to compare the effects of induced fatigue of the quadriceps and hamstring muscles on the kinematics and kinetics of the knee joint during a single-leg landing in a forward-drop jump task. METHODS: Of the 108 athletes (aged 20-25 years) randomized to either the quadriceps or hamstring fatigue group, 93 completed the study and were ana
