Myiasis is the infestation of live vertebrates with dipterous larvae. It is a rare entity in the otolaryngology and is more common to occur in patients with mental or physical disabilities. There are only few cases reported in the literature, and most cases are seen in tropical and rural areas. In this case report, we present a 65-year-old patient, with a history of parotid malignancy, who presented with aural myiasis with extension to the mastoid. We discuss the clinical presentation, the further examinations, and the treatment for early- and late-stage infection.

Myiasis is a common travel-associated dermatosis. We describe a 52-year-old Italian man who acquired Dermatobia hominis when bitten by a mosquito during a visit to Argentina. He had a painful nodular lesion on the left cheek that had been present for about 3 weeks. The complete removal of the larva is the goal of medical treatment. Prescription of antibiotics to avoid secondary infections is not recommended. For psychological reasons and due to the failure of previous therapies, the lesion was excised. Travelers to endemic areas should be informed of preventive measures to reduce mosquito bite…

BACKGROUND: Myiasis is a condition in which flies are attracted to infected and/or necrotic tissues and deposit eggs that hatch into larvae. It may bring serious functional and aesthetic sequelae when involves nasal and parasinusal cavities; however, there is a lack of such reports in the literature.
METHODS: We present and briefly discuss herein the clinical and surgical management of nasosinusal myiasis in an elderly patient previously affected by mucocutaneous leishmaniosis.
RESULTS: Facial computed tomography was used to confirm the nasosinusal involvement. Next, osteotomies were perform…

Myiasis is the infestation of a mammal by fly larvae which thrive by feeding on, and occupying the host. Largely a problem in livestock, human infestations in rural tropical areas of the globe are not uncommon. Myiasis may involve the skin, eyes, nasal passages, gastrointestinal and genitourinary tracts. Cases of urinary myiasis are rare in the USA; however, it may occur in immunocompromised hosts, those with previous urologic instrumentation or those with poor socioeconomic status. We present a case of successful outpatient treatment of urinary myiasis in an immunocompetent female without pri…

Myiasis is the invasion of Diptera larvae in live vertebrates tissues. It has been registered in tropical areas, but not in urban animals of North America. Moreover, there is no information about lesions description, laboratory tests, and treatment applied to canines. We report a myiasis located in the dorsum of an overweight male canine. Insect larvae were identified as Lucilia eximia, an opportunistic species that scarcely infest live vertebrates, and with no records in North America animals before. Abnormalities of complete blood count like leukocytosis by neutrophilia and serum biochemical…

Myiasis is the infestation of tissues of live vertebrate animals and humans with dipterous larvae. In sub-Saharan Africa, Cordylobia anthropohaga and Cordylobia rodhaini are known to be responsible for cutaneous myiasis in animals and humans. Human cases of myiasis, purportedly acquired in Ghana but diagnosed in other countries, have been reported; however, published data on its occurrence in animals in Ghana is unavailable. This study assessed the prevalence of canine myiasis among owned dogs in the Greater Accra region (GAR) of Ghana. A cross-sectional study was conducted in the Greater Accr…

Urogenital myiasis results when flies lay their eggs near the exit of the urethra and the larvae proceed upward along the urogenital tract. In this case report, a 10 year-old female patient diagnosed with urogenital myiasis was reported. The patient presented with complaints including painful and frequent urination, genital pruritus and moving larvae in urine. The patient had received Enterobius vermicularis treatment previously for two times. A 24-hour urine sample was collected and two black larvae were found in the urine. It was found that these larvae were fourth-stage larvae of Psychoda a…

Furuncular myiasis occurs after larvae penetrate on the skin. The disease is characterized by the presence of a nodule with a central hole through which there is serosanguinous exudate drainage. The authors present a case of furuncular myiasis by Dermatobia hominis in which late diagnosis made it necessary to have the orifice margins surgically enlarged in order to extract the larva. They also emphasize that dermoscopy is a useful auxiliary tool in this diagnosis.

OBJECTIVE: Myiasis is the infestation of live humans (or animals) by fly larvae. Although the diagnosis is relatively straightforward, how to best treat aural myiasis has not been well described in the literature. This comprehensive literature review, therefore, was performed to identify current management principles in aural myiasis, especially with regard to the causative fly family. In addition, we explore the possible relationship between aural myiasis and the highly lethal intracranial myiasis.
DATA SOURCES: Literature review using the Medline database (PubMed), Scopus, and Google Schola…

Myiasis is the infestation of the skin and mucous membranes by fly larvae. Myiasis of the lower extremity caused by Chrysomya bezziana is rarely fatal, but it can be associated with considerable morbidity. Proper wound exploration and en masse removal of all the larvae using thorough wound debridement can eradicate the infestation and promote wound healing. In the present report, the management of 4 separate cases of lower extremity infestation with fly larvae is described.

INTRODUCTION: The term myiasis is applied to the injurious action that larvae of certain Diptera cause in vertebrate animals by growing in living or dead tissue. Because of its great destructive potential, appropriate and preventive treatment is necessary. Oral myiasis is a rare pathology in humans and is associated with poor oral hygiene, alcoholism, senility, suppurating lesion, severe halitosis, and other conditions.
METHOD: We have presented a case of oral myiasis in a mentally challenged patient.
RESULTS: Reviewing the literature revealed that most of the cases involved the anterior par…

Ovine cutaneous myiasis ('fly strike') remains a major sheep health problem in many areas of the world. Myiasis risk is the result of a complex interaction of factors, such as fly and host abundance, host susceptibility, climate and, critically, husbandry and management strategies, all of which change seasonally in space and time. Given the complexity of the interacting factors, changes in myiasis incidence are hard to predict, as accordingly are the optimal husbandry responses required to manage the problem. Here the important risk factors are briefly reviewed and the future changes in myiasi…

A 73-year-old Chinese man was admitted to the Accident and Emergency Premorbid Ward of a local hospital in Malaysia. The patient complained of shortness of breath with cough and was in a semi-conscious state. He was later admitted to an intensive care unit (ICU) of the hospital. Six days after admission 5-6 maggots were recoverd from the nasal cavity. The maggots were identified as the third-instar larvae of Lucilia cuprina Wiedmann (Diptera: Calliphoridae) based on the morphological characteristics. This patient was classified as having nosocomial myiasis. The presence of the third instar lar…

Myiasis is infestation of skin, mucosa, orifices or natural cavities of humans or animals by larvae of flying dipterous insects that, at least for a certain period of their life cycle, feed from live or necrotic tissue of the host. The distribution is worldwide with more cases being reported from tropical, subtropical and warm temperate areas. This report describes a rare case of perianal condylomata acuminata complicated with myiasis due to Chrysomya bezziana, seen in the presence of poor hygiene in a tropical country with a high fly population.

Cavernous sinus thrombosis is a severe encephalic complication of the cervicofacial infections that can lead to death if not treated in adequate time. Among the several etiologies related to the development of this infection, myiasis has not been reported, enforcing the importance of the report of a case of thrombosis of the cavernous sinus developed from a facial myiasis.

A 60-year-old, otherwise healthy, male farmer presented to our Dermatology Department with a large ulcer on his lower right leg. The lesion had started as a small papule 6 months before, which became eroded and transformed into a rather rapidly progressive ulcer. On careful inspection, numerous larvae were found moving within the wound. The larvae were analyzed and found to be Lucilia sericata (the green bottle blowfly). The lesion was diagnosed histopathologically as squamous cell carcinoma. The myiasis was treated by submerging the wound in a dilute permanganate potassium solution.

Myiasis is the infestation of human tissue by fly maggots. Although it is most often reported in tropical and sub-tropical regions of the world and in travelers returning from these areas, cases do occur in the United States. We report here a case of cutaneous myiasis observed in the setting of an eccrine adnexal neoplasm in an otherwise healthy host. Entomological analysis of the isolated organisms revealed additional information of interest.
