Recounting the untold stories of breast cancer patient experiences: lessons learned from a patient-public involvement and engagement storytelling event.

OBJECTIVES: Breast cancer remains a prevalent disease in women worldwide. Though advancements in breast cancer care have improved patient survival, a breast cancer diagnosis, and subsequent interventions have a lasting impact on patients' lived experiences during the pandemic. METHODS: We present the collaborative learning process from this patient engagement workshop series as a community-academic partnership. Narrative medicine tools were used to recount patients' lived experiences following diagnosis, where both patients and researchers shared their cancer research activities in each works

Narrative predicts cardiac synchrony in audiences.

Audio-visual media possesses a remarkable ability to synchronise audiences' neural, behavioural, and physiological responses. This synchronisation is considered to reflect some dimension of collective attention or engagement with the stimulus. But what is it about these stimuli that drives such strong engagement? There are several properties of media stimuli which may lead to synchronous audience response: from low-level audio-visual features, to the story itself. Here, we present a study which separates low-level features from narrative by presenting participants with the same content but in

Resisting industry narratives: guidance to avoid tobacco and nicotine industry framing.

The tobacco and nicotine industry has a long history of endangering the health and wellbeing of individuals, populations and society, including Indigenous peoples, via dubious practices and tactics that continue today. These tactics include generating opposition, fracturing consensus, dehumanizing groups and minimizing the perception of harms from tobacco use. This article offers guidance for people working in health promotion and tobacco control to align with the World Health Organization's Framework Convention on Tobacco Control, which includes Articles on research, monitoring and informatio

'Plan Z and then off the edge of a cliff': An interpretative phenomenological analysis of mothers' experience of living with a slow-to-heal Caesarean wound.

BACKGROUND: Studies indicate that complex postsurgical wound healing can significantly alter biopsychological markers responsible for recovery. Yet, there is a lack of research investigating women's experience of living with slow-to-heal Caesarean birth wounds. This is an important area of investigation considering the increase of factors associated with surgical births and poor wound healing in the UK and globally. AIM: The aim of this study was to explore women's experiences of living with a slow-to-heal Caesarean wound. METHOD: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with seven women wh

Experiences and impact of living with incontinence associated stigma: A protocol for a systematic review and narrative synthesis of qualitative studies.

INTRODUCTION: Incontinence is global health and social issue, with urinary incontinence alone affecting over 400 million people. Incontinence can lead to physical harms such as skin damage, but it also commonly causes social and psychological harms, including those associated with stigma. For many people, treatment to cure incontinence does not work or is not suitable and they live with the long-term consequences of incontinence. At the moment, no stigma reduction interventions (increasingly used with other conditions such as mental health problems and HIV) have been developed for people livin

NETfacts: a community intervention integrating trauma treatment at the individual and collective level.

The aim of this article is to present a research-based rationale for NETfacts, a newly developed integrated approach at the individual and the community level in order to mitigate the mental and social sequelae of war and crisis. To this end, we provide a selective review of relevant literature from neuroscience, clinical psychology, and social science. In psychotraumatology, individual avoidance describes the effort to prevent exposure to trauma reminders. Among patients with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), this becomes pathological, exacerbating distress and preventing recovery. This

Evidence for a visual bias when recalling complex narratives.

Although it is understood that episodic memories of everyday events involve encoding a wide array of perceptual and non-perceptual information, it is unclear how these distinct types of information are recalled. To address this knowledge gap, we examine how perceptual (visual versus auditory) and non-perceptual details described within a narrative, a proxy for everyday event memories, were retrieved. Based on previous work indicating a bias for visual content, we hypothesized that participants would be most accurate at recalling visually described details and would tend to falsely recall non-v

Personal Agency and Community Resilience: Narratives of Women Navigating Health Care With Chronic Lyme Disease.

Chronic Lyme disease can manifest as a debilitating illness with symptoms that change over time. With its varied presentation, timeline variation, diagnostic difficulty, and lack of definitive treatment, clinical recognition of chronic Lyme disease remains controversial. At the same time, patients face challenges in finding a provider who is supportive and knowledgeable about diagnosing and treating Lyme. We examined the ways the medical system may have affected the lived experiences of chronic Lyme patients. In this article, we communicate the personal, health care, and community illness expe

Sexual transmission of Zika virus on Twitter: A depoliticised epidemic.

During global health crises, different narratives regarding infectious disease epidemics circulate in traditional media (e.g. news agencies, television channels) and social media. Our study investigated the narratives related to sexual transmission of Zika virus that circulated on Twitter during a public health emergency and analyzed the relationship between information on Twitter and on traditional media. We examined 10,748 tweets posted during the peaks of Twitter activity between January and March 2016. Posts in English, Spanish, French, and Portuguese and websites linked to tweets were man

Narrative and prosodic skills in children and adolescents with Down syndrome and typically developing children.

PURPOSE: Children with Down Syndrome (DS) show difficulties in language development, in both basic and complex abilities, as narratives. Less is known about the prosodic competence in DS, but the few available studies highlighted the presence of some deficits. Considering the importance of narratives and prosody in communication, the main aim of this study is to investigate these two competencies in participants with DS. METHOD: 13 children with DS participated (Mean age: 13;04, years; months). Their narrative and prosodic abilities, collected through a storytelling task, were compared with t

Themes of agency and communion and rehabilitation from substance misuse.

BACKGROUND: Current models of identity transformation in substance misuse recovery emphasise either communal or agentic growth processes. Building on life narrative studies of addicted males, the present study proposes that agency and communion themes distinguish the narrative identities of rehabilitated substance users from active users. METHOD: The 'Life as a Film' (LAAF) task was used to record narratives in an opportunity sample of 32 participants (23 males, 9 females) with ongoing or substance misuse history. Transcripts were coded for agency and communion, and external measures of rehab

A Review of Surgical Nuances and Outcomes of the Reverse Stapedotomy.

The stapes surgery has evolved through different eras of technical and technological development. The current standard of care is creating a stapedotomy with piston placement, and both these aspects have multiple variations and show well-established technological advances. The conventional technique has been fairly standardized, and it offers gratifying results to both the surgeon and the patient. To overcome certain procedural risks and potential complications, the reversal of steps technique was developed and streamlined by Ugo Fisch in the early 1980s. Since its beginning, the technique has

Idea density in Japanese for the early detection of dementia based on narrative speech.

BACKGROUND: Idea density (ID), a natural language processing-based index, was developed to aid in the detection of dementia through the analysis of English narratives. However, it has not been applied to non-English languages due to the difficulties in translating grammatical concepts. In this study, we defined rules to count ideas in Japanese narratives based on a previous study and proposed a novel method to estimate ID in Japanese text using machine translation. MATERIALS: The study participants comprised 42 Japanese patients with dementia aged 69-98 years (mean: 84.95 years). We collected

Adolescents' experiences of living with sickle cell disease: An integrative narrative review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Sickle Cell Disease is the commonest monogenic haemoglobinopathy worldwide. Living with a long-term condition such as sickle cell disease during adolescence constitutes a significant challenge for the key stakeholders due to the combined effects of chronic illness and adolescent development. For adolescents with sickle cell disease to be cared for and supported appropriately and effectively, it is crucial that health professionals have a comprehensive knowledge and understanding of how adolescents experience living with the condition. While there is developing literature about how

Inter-individual variability in discourse informativeness in elderly populations.

An increasing number of studies focus on discourse production in patients with neurodegenerative diseases and underline its clinical usefulness. However, if this is to be used as a clinical tool, one needs to consider how normal discourse varies within cognitively unimpaired elderly populations. In the current study, the aim has been to investigate discourse macrolinguistic variability. For this, 123 participants aged between 55 and 84 were recruited. A cluster analysis of their discourse macrolinguistic features was conducted. Then, cluster characterisation based on socio-demographic and ling

A narrative synthesis of factors that affect women speaking up about early warning signs and symptoms of pre-eclampsia and responses of healthcare staff.

BACKGROUND: One of the challenges for treating pre-eclampsia and preventing further deterioration is determining how best to enable early detection. If women or their partners and families are able to raise early warnings about potential signs and symptoms of pre-eclampsia in pregnancy, birth and in the postnatal period, women may be able to receive earlier intervention to prevent severe pre-eclampsia from developing. The aim of this study was to improve understanding of factors affecting the ability of women to recognise symptoms and signs of pre-eclampsia/eclampsia and seek appropriate medic

Four Pathways to Anorexia Nervosa: Patients' Perspective on the Emergence of AN.

INTRODUCTION: Studies show that patients' perception of their illness has a direct influence both on their utilization of health services and their adherence to treatment plans. This may be particularly relevant to the treatment of Anorexia Nervosa (AN). Previous studies on AN have typically explored single psycho-social factors that patients with AN relate to the emergence of their illness. There is a need for more coherent systematic descriptions of the complexity of the patients' narratives about how their illness emerged. In this study, we sought to identify common components in the partic

Factors to consider for motor neurone disease carer intervention research: A narrative literature review.

OBJECTIVE: The experience of caregiving in the context of motor neurone disease (MND) is extremely challenging. Over the past 15 years, quantitative and qualitative studies have delineated the psychosocial aspects of this experience, exploring its impact on caregivers' quality of life, rates of depression, distress, anxiety, and burden. Our paper aimed to provide an overview of the lived experience of MND caregivers, identifying the variables that can influence MND caregiver functioning that are relevant to the development of an intervention. METHOD: A narrative review was conducted, synthesi
