[Advances in osteoradionecrosis of nasopharynx after radiotherapy for nasopharyngeal carcinoma].

Radiation therapy is the first choice for the treatment of nasopharyngeal carcinoma. However, it is inevitable that nasopharyngeal mucosa and tissue will be damaged after radiotherapy of nasopharyngeal carcinoma, which will cause corresponding complications. Nasopharyngeal osteonecrosis is a serious complication. Up to now, there are few reports about nasopharyngeal osteonecrosis, and the underlaying pathological mechanism remains unclear. The potential theories include radiotherapy damage, infection and trauma, but also the " three H" principle of hypoxic hypocellular hypovascular tissue, as

Medical History, Medication Use, and Risk of Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma.

Because persistent inflammation may render the nasopharyngeal mucosa susceptible to carcinogenesis, chronic ear-nose-throat (ENT) disease and its treatment might influence the risk of nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC). Existing evidence is, however, inconclusive and often based on methodologically suboptimal epidemiologic studies. In a population-based case-control study in southern China, we enrolled 2,532 persons with NPC and 2,597 controls, aged 20-74 years, from 2010 to 2014. Odds ratios were estimated for associations between NPC risk and history of ENT and related medications. Any history o

Nasopharyngeal temperature measurement in sheep during general anesthesia.

The aim of this study was to compare nasopharyngeal and esophageal temperature measurements in anesthetized sheep with a range of fresh gas flows (1 to 6 L/min) through the breathing system. Data were compared using a Bland-Altman plot and correlation coefficients, and error measures were calculated. One hundred and ninety-five sets of data were collected from 20 sheep weighing 41 kg (31 to 51.5 kg). The bias (95% limit of agreement), correlation coefficient, and absolute error for nasopharyngeal compared to esophageal temperature were 0.04°C (-0.77°C to 0.85°C), 0.92, and 0.29°C ± 0.29°C, res

Beating 'Guangdong cancer': a review and update on nasopharyngeal cancer.

Once endemic in southern China, nasopharyngeal cancer is becoming less prevalent in Hong Kong. This is probably due to a better understanding of the risk factors associated with the disease, its genomic landscape, advances in radiotherapy technology, and development of effective systemic agents. More specifically, the close relationship between Epstein-Barr virus and nasopharyngeal cancer opens up the possibility of using Epstein-Barr virus DNA as a biomarker for early detection and monitoring of the disease. On the other hand, the looming genomic data for nasopharyngeal cancer aid in the deve

Identification of genes and pathways in nasopharyngeal carcinoma by bioinformatics analysis.

BACKGROUND: Corneal topography is an important diagnostic tool and highly repeatable and reproducible topographic devices are essential in eye care practice. Placido disc-based topography is one of the most widely used methods because of its high resolution and accuracy. The aim of this study was to analyse the intrasession repeatability and intersession reproducibility of measurements obtained with a Keratograph 5M in a sample of healthy subjects. METHODS: Three consecutive measurements were performed with a Keratograph 5M during two sessions in 24 healthy subjects to calculate the within-su

Endoscopic Endonasal Resection of Recurrent Nasopharyngeal Mucoepidermoid Carcinoma.

Nasopharyngeal mucoepidermoid carcinoma is a rare entity, for which surgical resection is the treatment of choice. The open technique is considered the standard approach, but this often results in significant morbidities such as trismus, dysphagia, and neurologic deficits. The advent of endoscopic endonasal techniques has made endoscopic resection a viable alternative to the open approach in terms of access, adequacy of resection, and lesser surgical morbidity. The authors describe a patient of recurrent nasopharyngeal mucoepidermoid carcinoma that was resected entirely endoscopically. The aut

Nasopharyngeal carcinoma: United Kingdom National Multidisciplinary Guidelines.

This is the official guideline endorsed by the specialty associations involved in the care of head and neck cancer patients in the UK. Although much commoner in the eastern hemisphere, with an age-standardised incidence rate of 0.39 per 100 000 population, cancers of the nasopharynx form one of the rarer subsites in the head and neck.1 This paper provides recommendations on the work up and management of nasopharyngeal cancer based on the existing evidence base for this condition. Recommendations • Patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) should be assessed with rigid and fibre-optic nasend

Nasopharyngeal polyp causing sensory disturbances: a case report.

Nasopharyngeal polyps are benign abnormal mucosal protrusions associated with nasal and pharyngeal mucosa. They are commonly found in all age groups with various symptoms. This paper presents a case of a 52-year-old male who presented with constant numbness over the dental midline and extending along the right side of the maxilla for the past few weeks. The patient also reported difficulty in breathing, especially lying down. After a comprehensive head and neck examination, including muscle palpation and temporomandibular joint examination, all within normal limits, a CNS lesion was suspected.

Iatrogenic intracranial placement of nasopharyngeal airway after trauma.

CT images of an 18-year-old woman who had sustained head trauma after a motor vehicle accident are presented demonstrating the iatrogenic intracranial placement of a nasopharyngeal airway. Treatment required a decompressive craniectomy, removal of the nasopharyngeal airway under direct vision, and duraplasty. The patient made a good neurological recovery, but did require ongoing medical treatment for diabetes insipidus. The case illustrates the importance of avoiding intranasal placement of any object in a patient with head trauma and suspected skull base fractures prior to diagnostic imaging.

Suspected Aerogenous Lung Metastases From Nasopharyngeal Cancer.

A 44-year-old man experiencing repeated episodes of epistaxis and respiratory aspiration was diagnosed with nasopharyngeal cancer. Although the tumor completely disappeared after chemoradiation, six pulmonary nodules developed in the right lower lobe within a year. Right lower lobectomy was performed. All nodules were metastases of the nasopharyngeal cancer. Surgery was performed despite a poor prognosis, and there has been no recurrence 12 years postoperatively. Aerogenous metastases were suggested owing to right lower lobe localization and the patient's symptoms and prolonged survival. The p

A Rare Presentation of Primary Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma (NPC) in Mediastinum.

INTRODUCTION: Nasopharyngeal carcinoma among the children has been rare accounting for only 1% of all pediatric malignancies. Both genetic and environmental factors have contributed to the development of nasopharyngeal carcinoma. Among the children there was a higher rate of undifferentiated histology. The mean age of nasopharyngeal carcinoma diagnosis has been 11 years old age; and the most common site was nasopharynx. Palpable lymphadenopathy, dysphasia and neural defect were common associated signs. CASE PRESENTATION: A 15-year-old boy has presented with a mass that located near by the hea

Nasopharyngeal foreign body triggered by a blind finger sweep.

A previously healthy 1-year-old boy suddenly began choking and coughing after ingesting a coin. The child's mother attempted to extract the coin by inserting her fingers in his mouth and sweeping the oral cavity. The mother felt the object momentarily with her fingertips but was unable to retrieve it, and brought her son to a local hospital for assistance. The patient was referred to our emergency department (ED) for possible oesophageal obstruction by a foreign body based on the X-ray findings. On arrival at our ED, the child exhibited mild gagging but presented no respiratory symptoms and no

Management of Otic and Nasopharyngeal, and Nasal Polyps in Cats and Dogs.

Feline inflammatory polyps are the most common nonneoplastic lesion of ear and nasopharynx in cats. Minimally invasive techniques for polyp removal, such as traction avulsion combined with curettage of the tympanic cavity and per-endoscopic transtympanic traction, have been successful for long-term resolution. Feline nasal hamartomas are benign lesions of the nasopharynx, and most have a good prognosis after surgical removal. Canine aural and nasopharyngeal inflammatory polyps are rare and have a similar clinical presentation as cats with these lesions. In dogs, it is important to achieve an a

A role of MMP-14 in the regulation of invasiveness of nasopharyngeal carcinoma.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

Although matrix metalloproteinase 14 (MMP-14) has been shown to play a substantial role in the carcinogenesis of some types of cancer, its involvement in the pathogenesis of nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) has not been reported. Here, we analyzed MMP-14 levels in the NPC specimens from patients and compared with the paired normal nasopharynx (NNP) tissues. We found that NPC had significantly higher messenger RNA (mRNA) and protein levels of MMP-14. Moreover, higher levels of MMP-14 correlated with more advanced status of clinical stage and lymphatic metastasis. In vitro, MMP-14 levels determine

Combined transcervical and orbitozygomatic approach for the removal of a nasopharyngeal adenocarcinoma.

OBJECTIVE: In some cases, the exposure and safeguarding of the internal carotid artery (ICA) are not easy by the maxillary swing approach that is used as a mainstay for the removal of nasopharyngeal tumors. To address this issue, we have developed a new combined transcervical and orbitozygomatic approach. METHODS: A nasopharyngeal adenocarcinoma arose in a 52-year-old patient and occupied the right middle skull base extending to the ICA. We first identified and dissected the ICA from the posterolateral part of the tumor using a transcervical approach. Then, the tumor was approached and remove
