Low-grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasm mimicking an adnexal mass.

We present a rare case of malignant epithelial neoplasm of the appendix, an uncommon disorder encountered in clinical practice, which poses a variety of diagnostic and therapeutic challenges. We report a particular case in which the appendix was abnormally located in the pelvis, mimicking an adnexal mass. Therefore, it was difficult to make the preoperative diagnosis on clinical examination, imaging studies and laboratory tests and we discovered the lesion during the diagnostic laparoscopy. No lymphadenopathy or mucinous ascites were found. The case was completely handled via the laparoscopic

Mucinous cystic neoplasm of the liver with low grade dysplasia of the liver.

Mucinous cystic neoplasm (MCN) with low grade dysplasia of the liver is rare. It had been previously called hepatobiliary cystadenoma and is seen almost exclusively in women without an associated invasive carcinoma. There are different theories for development of MCN of the liver. One of these is developing from endodermal immature stroma or primary yolk cells implanted during embryogenesis. Another theory refers to the prevalence of hepatic mucinous cystic neoplasm in segment IV, which may support an implant origin because hamartomatous lesions commonly develop in segment IV. The third theory

Differences in symptoms between patients with benign and malignant ovarian neoplasms.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to determine the symptoms that are experienced by patients who receive a diagnosis of early ovarian cancer and to compare those symptoms with the symptoms that are experienced by patients with late ovarian cancer, borderline ovarian cancer, and benign ovarian neoplasms. STUDY DESIGN: This study used a retrospective case-control design. Cases of invasive and borderline ovarian cancer (n=147 patients) were compared with 76 patients with benign ovarian neoplasms. RESULTS: Patients with early ovarian cancer were significantly more likely to have symptoms

Does Nodal Metastasis and Perineural Invasion Affect Local Control in Hyalinizing Clear Cell Carcinoma of the Oral Cavity? A Case Report with Long Term Follow-Up.

Hyalinizing clear cell carcinoma (HCCC) is a rare, low-grade neoplasm accounting for approximately 1% of salivary gland neoplasms. Histologically, it is characterized by a monomorphous population of clear cells arranged in sheets, nests, or cords, lacking ductal structures. Until recently, clear cell carcinoma of the oral cavity (OC) represented a diagnosis of exclusion when other head and neck pathologic entities such as epithelial-myoepithelial carcinoma or mucoepidermoid carcinoma could be ruled out, making definitive diagnosis by light microscopy and immunoprofiling a challenge. As a resul

Clinical and pathological features of intraductal papillary neoplasm of the biliary tract and gallbladder.

BACKGROUND: Intraductal papillary neoplasms of the biliary tract (IPNB) and intracholecystic papillary neoplasms (ICPN) are rare tumours characterized by intraluminal papillary growth that can be associated with invasive carcinoma. Their natural history remains poorly understood. This study examines clinicopathological features and outcomes. METHODS: Patients who underwent surgery for IPNB/ICPN (2008-2014) were identified. Descriptive statistics and survival data were generated. RESULTS: Of 23 patients with IPNB/ICPN, 10 were male, and the mean age was 68 years. The most common presentations

Malignant thymoma: a review of 44 cases.

BACKGROUND: Malignant thymomas are rare neoplasms. Factors affecting prognosis and survival of patients with this neoplasm have been intensively discussed, but the results vary among different studies. To find possible prognostic factors, we designed this retrospective study. METHODS: Forty-four cases of malignant thymomas diagnosed and treated in Chang Gung Memorial Hospital, Kaohsiung, from 1986 to 1996 were reviewed. RESULTS: Of the 44 cases, 24 were male and 20 were female (M:F = 1.2:1). Patient age ranged from 25 to 73 years (median 48 years). Thirty-four cases (77%) belonged to type I

Anal canal neoplasms in the modern era: integrating HPV biology, LAST terminology, and evolving molecular classification.

Anal canal neoplasia comprises a heterogeneous and evolving group of precursor lesions and invasive malignancies whose classification increasingly depends on integrating morphology, human papillomavirus association, immunophenotype, and molecular alterations. This review summarizes current concepts in the pathology of anal canal neoplasms, with emphasis on practical application of Lower Anogenital Squamous Terminology, distinction between low-grade and high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions, and the role of ancillary testing in diagnostically challenging cases. We discuss the expanding sp

Unusual invasion of primary pulmonary adenocarcinoma in a cat.

CASE SUMMARY: An 11-year-old female spayed domestic shorthair cat was referred to the Foster Hospital for Small Animals, USA for suspected dysautonomia based on weight loss, vomiting and referral radiographs that showed severe dilation of the esophagus, stomach and entire gastrointestinal tract. After recheck radiographs revealed a decrease in gas compared with the referral images, persistently reduced gastrointestinal motility was deemed less likely; however, cardiomegaly and a soft tissue opacity overlying the esophagus were noted. Echocardiogram identified a pulmonary mass either impinging

[Intraoperative frozen sections in diseases of the female genital tract].

Intraoperative frozen sections are particularly important for ovarian tumors because definitive preoperative histology is not possible. The diagnostic accuracy of frozen sections is highest for primary invasive ovarian carcinomas and benign ovarian lesions, followed by borderline tumors and poorest for ovarian metastases and rare neoplasms, such as germ cell tumors. Endometrial carcinoma should be diagnosed preoperatively by curettage or biopsy. For endometrioid endometrial carcinomas the indications for lymphadenectomy are often based on intraoperative assessment of the uterus. The differenti

Imaging of the seminal vesicle and vas deferens.

The seminal vesicle (SV) and vas deferens (VD) are ancillary but essential urogenital organs. Understanding their embryologic features and anatomy can be helpful in evaluating various disorders of these organs. Recently, cross-sectional imaging modalities, including ultrasonography, computed tomography, and magnetic resonance (MR) imaging, have been increasingly used for evaluation of the SV and VD. The development of these organs is closely related to that of urinary organs, including the kidneys and ureters. Frequently, unilateral SV agenesis is associated with renal agenesis, and bilateral

Hürthle cell carcinoma: diagnostic and therapeutic implications.

BACKGROUND: Hürthle cell carcinoma is a variant of follicular cell carcinoma of thyroid. It may present as a low-grade tumour or as a more aggressive type. Prognosis depends upon the age of the patient, tumour size, extent of invasion and initial nodal or distant metastasis. PATIENT AND METHODS: The case of Hürthle cell carcinoma is reported in a 79-year-old man who presented with a rapidly increasing lump on the left side of his neck, having had a right hemithyroidectomy for colloid goitre 24-years-ago. Fine needle aspiration cytology confirmed the presence of Hürthle cells, raising the poss

Primary mucinous adenocarcinoma of the endometrium. A clinicopathologic and histochemical study.

Of 256 patients with carcinoma confined to the uterine corpus at the time of hysterectomy treated in the period 1959-1975 at Stanford University Hospital, 98 patients (38%) had neoplasms which demonstrated at least focal intracytoplasmic mucin. In 21 carcinomas (9%), intracytoplasmic mucin production was the dominant form of differentiation--a group which we designate primary mucinous carcinoma of the endometrium. Freedom from relapse and frequency of myometrial invasion were not statistically different for patients whose neoplasms contained intracytoplasmic mucin, regardless of the amount of

Minimally Invasive Resection of Benign Esophageal Lesions.

Benign esophageal lesions include a wide variety of rare neoplasms, polyps, and cysts. In general, these lesions are asymptomatic and have little clinical importance. However, on occasion these lesions become symptomatic due to esophageal obstruction, airway obstruction, or compression of mediastinal structures. In these cases, as well as cases when it is unclear if the lesion is malignant or benign, surgical resection is recommended. Resection is most often performed by extramucosal enucleation, a procedure that is oftentimes well-suited for a minimally invasive approach. Here we discuss the

Laparoscopic resection of a pancreatic serous cystadenoma preserving the integrity of main pancreatic duct: a case report.

Pancreatic serous cystadenomas are rare benign cystic neoplasms. Extended operations are unnecessary for serous cystadenomas and minimally invasive surgery should be performed. Laparoscopic pancreatic procedures are under evaluation. We present a case of a 79-year-old Greek woman with symptomatic cholelithiasis and a serous pancreatic cystadenoma located at the neck of the pancreas. In the occasion of a standard laparoscopic cholecystectomy the pancreatic mass was resected with a novel minimally invasive laparoscopic method preserving the integrity of the main pancreatic duct and the whole pan

Ethmoidal sinus adenocarcinoma with orbital invasion.

PURPOSE: To report a rare case of massive ethmoidal adenocarcinoma with orbital invasion but minimal ophthalmic symptoms on presentation. METHODS: Case report of a 69-year-old, otherwise healthy, retired carpenter who was referred for treatment of bilateral senile cataract. RESULTS: A relative afferent pupillary defect and sectorial disc atrophy on ophthalmic examination led to further investigation and identification of an extensive ethmoidal neoplasm with orbital invasion. An incisional biopsy was performed and histopathologic examination revealed an adenocarcinoma of low-grade malignancy.

Right temporal lobe glioblastoma presenting in the left orbit. Case report.

Dissemination of gliomas outside the central nervous system without preceding neurosurgery is a rare phenomenon. Glial neoplasms presenting as bone lesions are even more rare. A case of glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) with initial presentation in the orbit following a single generalized seizure is described. Signs of intracranial hypertension resulted from subarachnoid tumor invasion. The patient was treated with whole-dose radiation therapy but survived for only 6 months following the initial presentation. An autopsy revealed a right temporal GBM with extensive subarachnoid spread and invasion

Carcinoma in situ of the distal part of the colon and of the rectum.

One hundred and three patients with carcinoma in situ in the rectum, rectosigmoid and sigmoid colon were evaluated retrospeactively. The majority of the lesions occurred within an adenomatous polyp. A synchronous invasive carcinoma of the colon was present in 43 patients, whereas 42 patients had carcinoma in situ unassociated with another malignant neoplasm or major medical illness. In the latter group of patients, adequate treatment of carcinoma in situ resulted in cure, while two patients who refused treatment died of invasive carcinoma of the colon. Adequate treatment could be obtained by l

Low-grade papillary cystadenocarcinoma of the parotid gland: presentation of a case with cytological, histopathological, and immunohistochemical features and pertinent literature review.

Cystadenocarcinoma of the salivary glands is a very rare, slow growing, low-grade malignant neoplasm. However, when it occurs, it poses a diagnostic challenge. They are usually well circumscribed and exhibit multicystic appearance. The cytological features of fine-needle aspirates show bland appearing papillary and micropapillary neoplasm with variable cellularity and absence of cytological atypia. The cells are small to medium in size with abundant and occasionally vacuolated cytoplasm. The nuclei are eccentric, bland appearing, round, and at the most part uniform in size without anaplasia or
