A 61-year-old man with a history of malignant solitary fibrous tumor of the chest had development of unusual sites of metastasis involving the sphenoid wing of the orbit and soft tissues of the cheek. He was found to have a solitary fibrous tumor, an uncommon type of spindle cell neoplasm that most often arises in the pleura, which was metastatic to the orbit. This is the first reported case of malignant solitary fibrous tumor metastatic to the orbit. The clinical and histopathologic findings of metastatic malignant solitary fibrous tumor are described.

A case of a 4-year-old girl with pleuropulmonary blastoma is reported. Surgical resection of the tumor was performed and histologic examination revealed pleuropulmonary blastoma with rhabdomyosarcomatous differentiation. Postoperative chemotherapy was administered and 3 weeks after initiation of treatment protocol a second site of lesion in the retroperitoneum was revealed with extension to the mediastinum, which shared similar mesenchymal neoplastic characteristics to the previously diagnosed primary lesion. The girl died 4 1/2 months after initial evidence of disease because of brain metasta

A case of a 61-year-old woman who had a serous papillary carcinoma of probable peritoneal or surface ovarian origin, which formed a single tumor mass in the pelvis but did not metastasize throughout the abdominal cavity but only to the pleura and then the hilar lymph nodes over a protracted period lasting more than 7 years, is reported. This unusually behaving tumor was well differentiated and at least partially responded to therapy, as witnessed by its histologic appearance at autopsy. This type of neoplasm usually shows diffuse peritoneal dissemination and no distant metastasis.

Five patients with sarcomas of the spermatic cord were imaged with sonography and/or computed tomography (CT). The former modality is most helpful in demonstrating the extratesticular origin of the mass and evaluating its scrotal extension for local staging. CT is necessary for pelvic staging and searching for distant metastasis. The fat in liposarcomas was easily identified by CT, although it was not echogenic on sonography. Sonography should be the primary imaging modality for scrotal or inguinal masses. If a neoplasm is found, CT should be used for staging, prior to definitive surgical trea

Tumor-to-tumor metastasis (TTM) is a very rare condition in which a malignant tumor (donor) metastasizes into another primary neoplasm, either benign or malignant (recipient). We report the case of a 74-year-old man previously surgically treated for a clear cell renal cell carcinoma(ccRCC) who developped a new subsolid nodule in the right upper pulmonary lobe discovered at a four-year follow-up CT scan. The patient underwent a right uniportal thoracoscopic S1 segmentectomy and mediastinal lymph node dissection. Histopathological examination revealed a lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD) containing a fo

BACKGROUND: Malignant phyllodes tumor (PT) is a rare fibro epithelial neoplasm of the breast, which is poor prognosis due to high risk of recurrence and distant metastasis.
METHODS: We report a case of malignant PT. It had recurred locally five times, and the sixth relapse was occurred 54 months after first diagnosis, presenting a huge pelvic mass (14 cm × 11 cm) by CT scan. Histopathological examination has demonstrated a metastatic phyllodes tumor. After postoperative chemotherapy treatment, a longer survival has been achieved, which is more than 72 months.
RESULTS: Our case report describ

Thymic carcinoma is a rare, aggressive neoplasm with low 5-year survival rates ranging from 28 to 67%. Initial presentation with spinal or bone metastasis in primary thymic carcinoma is extremely rare. Thymic carcinoma, compared with thymoma, has higher recurrence rates and worse survival. We report one patient, a 29-year-old African-American male, with thymic carcinoma with metastasis to the epidural space (with cord compression), multiple bony structures (T10-L1) and left supraclavicular lymph node. Immunohistochemical staining was CD5 and c-Kit positive, consistent with thymic carcinoma. Pa

Mesenchymal chondrosarcoma is a rare and aggressive chondrogenic neoplasm arising from the bone or the soft tissue. Mesenchymal chondrosarcomas develop outside the osseous structures in about one-third of cases, and the majority of these occur in the meninges and the brain parenchyma. Intramuscular extraskeletal mesenchymal chondrosarcoma (EMC) is exceedingly rare, with very few cases reported in the literature. Although mesenchymal chondrosarcoma has a high potential for metastasis, there have been no reports of pulmonary metastasis from an EMC of intramuscular origin. Here, we describe a pat

A 59-year-old patient was admitted to hospital with recurrent flush symptoms and pathologically elevated 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid (5-HIAA) levels in urine. A known cystic lesion of the liver which had been followed for years by ultrasound examinations and was regarded as a bland hepatic cyst was identified as a metastasis of a neuroendocrine neoplasm of the ileum. In two sequential surgical interventions the primary tumor with mesenteric lymph node metastases as well as the cystic liver metastasis could be resected. After surgical treatment an R1 situation at the mesenteric site and suspicio

Gastrointestinal stromal tumors are the most common mesenchymal neoplasm of the gastrointestinal tract. Distant metastasis of gastrotintestinal stromal tumors occurs in ∼50% of the cases and is usually found in the liver and peritoneum. We present a patient with diplopia which was due to a metastatic gastrointestinal stromal tumor of the clivus. Transsphenoidal resection of the tumor was performed and post-operative treatment with oral imatinib mesylate was done. One month after the surgery, treatment was started with imatinib and the patient's diplopia improved within 15 days. Follow-up compu

Sarcoid reactions in lymph nodes with or without metastasis from a primary malignant neoplasm are well-known. However, it is extremely rare to find these reactions associated with cutaneous solid tumors; only one such case has appeared in the literature. Here we describe a case of an 83-year-old man with cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma accompanied by sarcoid reactions and metastatic foci in the regional lymph nodes. The possibilities of systemic sarcoidosis and tuberculosis were excluded after extensive examinations specific for these diseases. Some authors regard the sarcoid reaction to be

Previous studies regarding the clinical behavior of Spitz neoplasms lack genomic characterization. We aim to assess our hypothesis that most MAP3K8 Spitz neoplasms are indolent despite MAP3K8 being the single most common driver of Spitz melanoma. Further, we aim to identify genomic features associated with aggressive behavior and to better characterize the morphology of these cases. We analyzed the outcomes of MAP3K8 Spitz neoplasms. We also performed a meta-analysis of the outcomes of MAP3K8 Spitz from the literature. Morphologic features were compared with other variants of Spitz using a Stu

Thymic epithelial neoplasms are malignant lesions that originate from the thymus and include thymoma, thymic carcinoma, and thymic neuroendocrine tumors. Although computed tomography (CT) is typically considered the imaging modality of choice for identifying thymic tumors, characterizing the primary neoplasm, and staging of disease, the role of magnetic resonance (MR) imaging continues to expand. MR imaging is effective in distinguishing thymic epithelial neoplasms and other malignant tumors from benign lesions in the prevascular mediastinum, can be used to characterize and stage thymic tumors

Neoplastic data on 1370 control Wistar rats from 10 carcinogenicity bioassays done between 1980 and 1990 were reviewed. Mean percentage survival at 104 weeks was 58% for males and 59% for females. A total of 1857 neoplasms were diagnosed in 466 (68%) male and 582 (85%) female rats; 1390 were benign and 467 were malignant (12% with metastasis). Seventy-four percent of all neoplasms were in endocrine and reproductive systems. Most common neoplasms (affecting more than 7% of either sex) were pituitary adenoma (27.7% males; 55.0% females), mammary fibroadenoma (1.0% males; 25.3% females), mammary

Neoplasms in the infratemporal fossa (ITF) are rare and insidious lesions that cause various symptoms due to involvement of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), paranasal sinuses, and orbit. Here, we report a case of metastatic non-small cell lung adenocarcinoma in the ITF. The patient presented with facial pain and limited mouth opening, which did not respond to treatment for TMJ disorder, and a neoplasm was discovered in the ITF through medical imaging. With an open biopsy, the diagnosis was finalized. This report suggested that the physician should consider lesions in the ITF when facial pain

INTRODUCTION: Acute liver failure (ALF) due to a malignant neoplasm is rare. Here, we present a case of neuroendocrine carcinoma (NEC) with massive invasion to the liver and multi-organ causing ALF that resulted in a poor outcome. A 56-year-old man was referred to our hospital for ALF of unknown cause. Abdominal imaging studies revealed hepatomegaly with multiple intrahepatic lesions. The patient also showed disseminated intravascular coagulation. Despite administration of prednisolone for the ALF, he died suddenly of respiratory failure on day 3 after admission. Autopsy showed a markedly enla

The jaw is an uncommon site for metastasis, accounting for 1% of all oral cancers. The posterior mandible is the most common site of metastatic deposits, which typically present as ill-defined radiolucency. We present a case of metastatic prostate adenocarcinoma found during routine radiographic examination, resembling that of periapical pathology bilaterally in the mandible. The lesions presented as well-defined radiolucencies at the apex of non-vital teeth. Both lesions were revealed to be metastatic adenocarcinoma during histopathologic examination, emphasizing the importance of including m

Ovary involvement of non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) is rare. We report a rare case of ovarian NHL during adolescence revealed by bone metastasis. The diagnosis of malignant lymphoma was established after adnexectomy and histological study of the excised tissue. The tumor was classified as a diffuse large B-cell lymphoma. The patient has been treated according to the LMB French protocol with good outcome after two years. Although NHL is a rare ovarian neoplasm, it is essential to establish an accurate diagnosis as early as possible for therapeutic purposes.

Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) is a distinct salivary gland neoplasm that predominantly occurs in the minor salivary gland. ACC is an uncommon tumor that progress slowly affecting 5% of paranasal sinuses with high distant metastasis rate in advance stages. This salivary gland tumor is difficult to diagnose both clinically and histopathologically due to its indolent presentation and diverse histopathological patterns. Hence, immunohistochemistry plays a decisive role in diagnosing this tumor. A recurrent case of ACC of paranasal sinuses in the maxillary sinus of a 41-year-old female patient wit

Dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans (DFSP) is an uncommon dermal neoplasm that exhibits a high rate of local recurrence and infiltrative behavior, but has a low risk of metastasis. It arises as a slowly progressive, painless pink or violet plaque. Histologically, DFSP is characterized by a monomorphous spindle cell proliferation in a storiform pattern. The gold standard of treatment is surgical resection with negative margins. In cases where obtaining clear margins is not possible, radiation and systemic therapy with tyrosine kinase inhibitors, such as imatinib mesylate, has been shown to be effec
