We present a 55-year old man who, since age 21, progressively developed multiple papules and nodules on the face and upper trunk. Light microscopic examination of some of the neoplasms showed trichoblastomas, while others had histopathological features of trichoepithelioma and steatocystoma. Simultaneous occurrence of multiple trichoblastomas/trichoepitheliomas and steatocystomas, not reported previously, could represent multiple neoplasms involving differentiation toward different components of the folliculosebaceous unit.

Motivated by the diagnosis and treatment of two cases of nevoid or Goltz-Gorlin syndrome, we have taken a brief look at the literature and present these two cases, which display the four principal features defining this syndrome: multiple basal cell carcinomas, maxillary cysts, skeletal anomalies, and ectopic calcifications. Certain aspects are emphasized, including the association in one of them of basal cell carcinomas with a cystic adenoma or Brooke's tumor, which, although described by other authors, is infrequent.

BACKGROUND: Patients with Gorlin syndrome develop multiple basal cell carcinomas (BCC), for which treatment is often difficult. Methylaminolevulinate-photodynamic therapy (MAL-PDT) is approved for the treatment of superficial and nodular BCCs in Canada and several European countries.

Dentists should be aware of the multiple jaw cysts of NBCS that may develop in patients as young as 7 to 8 years. As the jaw cysts frequently are the initial symptom, dentists have the opportunity to detect the syndrome early, before the patients seek medical treatment. Any young patient with multiple odontogenic keratocysts in the jaws can develop other conditions characteristic of the disease. A careful family history should be taken, and the patient should be monitored closely for subsequent clinical manifestations of the disease.

BACKGROUND: Nevoid basal cell carcinoma syndrome (NBCC) is an autosomal dominant multisystem disorder. Persons with the NBCC gene have varied susceptibility to basal cell carcinoma (BCC) development.
OBJECTIVE: We examined the anatomic site-specific distribution of BCCs and the relation between sun exposure and numbers of BCCs in NBCC cases.
METHODS: A questionnaire asking about lifetime sun exposure, sun behavior habits, and number of BCCs was sent to 16 families with NBCC evaluated between 1985 and 1991. The results were compared with previously published data for the general population.

OBJECTIVE: This article describes a new subtype of actinic keratosis that exhibits proliferative characteristics both histologically and clinically. We describe three representative cases occuring in the presence of infiltrative squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) and/or basal cell carcinoma (BCC).

This preliminary report suggests that cryosurgery has a definite place in the management of certain external periocular and ocular problems. Cryosurgery for basal- or squamous-cell carcinoma of the lid is easily performed, gives excellent cosmetic results, and has a low recurrence rate.
