We describe the case of a 56-year-old man who was admitted for treatment of a progressive destruction of his hard palate, septum, nasal cartilage, and soft palate that had been caused by chronic cocaine inhalation. Biopsy of the bony septum revealed acute osteomyelitis and an extensive overgrowth of bacteria and Actinomyces-like organisms. There was no evidence of granuloma or neoplasm. The patient received intravenous ampicillin/sulbactam for 6 weeks, followed by lifetime oral amoxicillin. When there was no further evidence that destruction was progressing, the patient underwent nasal reconst

INTRODUCTION: A hamartoma is a benign tumor-like malformation, often taking the form of vascular malformation such as hemangiomas and lymphangiomas; hamartoma composed of other tissue types are much rarer in the oral cavity, exceptionally reported in the palate. We report herein a new case of palatal hamartoma. Our aim is to describe the epidemiological, clinico-pathologic and therapeutic features of this lesion.
OBSERVATION: A 53-years-old woman had a painless mass located on the right hard palate, measuring 2×1.5 cm of diameter, the mass was elastic with a smooth surface. On imaging, this m

Chondrosarcoma is a malignant tumor characterized by the formation of cartilage, but not bone, by tumor cells. Only 5% to 10% of chondrosarcomas occur in the head and neck, representing 0.1% of all head and neck neoplasms, with the larynx and the maxillo-nasal region being the most common sites. This report describes an unusual case of chondrosarcoma in a 54-year-old man who presented with pain and swelling in the left preauricular area. Computed tomography demonstrated a soft tissue mass in the left temporomandibular joint without causing erosion of the adjacent bony structures. The tumor was

Plasma cell neoplasms have been classified as multiple myeloma, solitary plasmacytoma, and extramedullary plasmacytoma. The solitary plasmacytoma of the maxilla is a rare condition that focuses solely on myelomatous tissue and is not disseminated to other parts of the skeleton. Some lesions appear to be benign and do not recur after complete removal, while others are locally invasive. The dense plasma cell infiltration that commonly is associated with inflammatory lesions within the oral tissues makes diagnosing plasmacytoma at this site problematic. This article presents a case of solitary pl

The epithelioid hemangioendothelioma is an uncommon vascular neoplasm of borderline or intermediate malignant potential. Although numerous sites of involvement are possible, these tumors most commonly arise in soft tissue, liver, and lung. Involvement of the oral cavity is rare. Only 12 cases of intraoral epithelioid hemangioendothelioma have been reported in the English language literature. We review the salient features of these previously reported cases and present 2 additional intraoral cases--one presenting as an asymptomatic radiolucency in the posterior mandible of a 23-year-old female,

Synovial chondromatosis is a well-known, well-described clinical and histopathologic entity. Occasionally, loose bodies in the knee joint can continue to grow and become large enough to impinge on joint motion. Extremely large synovial chondromata are relatively rare in the knee joint and have only been described in singular case reports in the orthopaedic literature. We describe two cases representing the spectrum of this disease process occurring in the popliteal fossa, simulating bony and/or soft tissue neoplasm. Case 1 demonstrates a large ossified chondroma, while Case 2 demonstrates a la

Malignant tumours with teratoid or blastomatous features are exceptionally rare in the upper respiratory tract with only 8 documented cases, including the 3 in this report. The tumours occurred in adults aged 27 to 62 yr, and the sites of origin were the ethmoid sinus (4 cases), ethmoid and other paranasal sinuses (2 cases), unspecified sinuses (1 case) and nasopharynx (1 case). The disease was rapidly fatal in 3 cases in which treatment was restricted to surgery and was associated with longer survivals in those given supportive radiotherapy. The tumours are locally aggressive and may invade s

Aggressive angiomyxoma, mostly originating in the female pelvis and peritoneum or in the male analogous sites, is a rare mesenchymal neoplasm characterized with infiltrative growth to adjacent tissue and local recurrence after primary excision. Herein, we report a case of aggressive angiomyxoma of maxilla in a 60-year-old male patient for its rarity. The patient presented with a one-year history of progressively enlarging maxillary mass on left side. Before referred to our hospital, he was given a biopsy and diagnosed as aggressive angiomyxoma by immunohistochemical staining. After that, he un

Hypertrophic osteoarthropathy is commonly associated with malignancies of the lungs and stomach. A few cases associated with epithelioid hemangioendothelioma, a rare vascular soft tissue neoplasm, have been reported. Presented here is the first report of a case of hypertrophic osteoarthropathy as the initial symptom of epithelioid hemangioendothelioma of the mediastinum. A 64-year-old woman presented with pain around the long bones and diffuse puffiness of bilateral hands and feet. She had a history of multiple malignancies, all of which were in remission. She had clubbing of her fingernails a

Ewing sarcoma (ES) is a malignant small round blue cell tumor most frequently arising in the long bones of adolescents and young adults, characterized by a translocation involving the Ewing sarcoma RNA-binding protein 1 (EWSR1) gene, most commonly the EWSR1/friend leukemia integration 1 (FLI1) fusion. We report a case of a 26-year-old man with left ankle pain found to have an extraosseous soft tissue mass surrounding the calcaneus. Histopathology revealed a highly cellular neoplasm of uniform small round blue cells arranged in sheets and nests, immunoreactive for cluster of differentiation 99

Epithelioid hemangioendothelioma (EHE) is a rare low-grade malignant vascular neoplasm characterized by local aggressiveness and metastatic potential. Clinically, EHE may involve multiple anatomical sites-including the lungs, liver, bones, and soft tissues-either synchronously or metachronously. Its non-specific clinical manifestations often complicate early diagnosis. Given the extreme rarity of documented cases in the literature, we report a rare case of right atrial EHE with concurrent bilateral pulmonary and extensive systemic metastases. Furthermore, we present a comprehensive literature

Extramedullary plasmacytoma (EMP) is a plasma cell neoplasm of soft tissue without bone marrow involvement or other systemic characteristics of multiple myeloma. Approximately 80%-90% of EMPs involve the head and neck region, especially in the nasal cavity, paranasal sinuses, tonsillar fossa, and oral cavity. An EMP of the larynx is extremely rare and is a locally destructive lesion without systemic spread. Clinical features vary depending on the tumor location. A diagnosis is established by histopathology, immunohistochemistry, and a systemic survey to exclude systemic plasma cell proliferati

Multiple myeloma is a malignant neoplasm of plasma cells characterized by proliferation of a single clone of abnormal immunoglobulin-secreting plasma cells. Since the amount of hemopoietic bone marrow is decreased in the maxilla, oral manifestations of multiple myeloma are less common in the maxilla than in the mandible. We report the case of 33-year-old Japanese man who presented with a mass in the right maxillary alveolar region. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance images showed a soft tissue mass in the right maxilla eroding the anterior and lateral walls of the maxillary sinus and e

Myoepithelial tumors were first described in 1943, and account for less than 1% of all salivary gland neoplasms. Their malignant variant, myoepithelial carcinoma, was first reported by Stromeyer et al. in 1975 and represents a very rare entity, characterized by distinct morphologic heterogeneity and an infiltrative growth pattern into adjacent tissues. However, there have been few reports on myoepithelial carcinoma affecting intra-oral minor salivary glands, and its immunohistochemical features have been poorly illustrated. We herein describe a rare case of myoepithelial carcinoma affecting th

Epithelioid hemangioendothelioma (EH) is an unusual vascular neoplasm characterized by proliferation of endothelial cells with epithelioid morphology. It has an indolent course, with the potential for recurrence, but rarely metastasizes. The common locations include soft tissue, skin, viscera and bone. We present an unusual case of EH in the nasal cavity and describe the clinical characteristics, histopathologic findings, differential diagnosis and management. The 25-year-old male patient initially presented with an 8-month history of intermittent epistaxis. Nasal endoscopy revealed a vascular

A case of giant cell tumor of the thoracic spine simulating mediastinal neoplasm was identified on plain films, CT scans, MR images, and with scintigraphy. CT showed a hypervascular soft-tissue mass with shell-like calcification in the right upper mediastinum. MR imaging showed a collapse of the T1 vertebral body and a mass extending to the mediastinum. The mass had a low signal on T1-weighted MR images and a predominantly high signal on T2-weighted images with heterogeneity. Technetium-99m methylene diphosphonate bone scintigraphy showed intense uptake in both the T1 and marginal parts of the

In its clinical presentation, malignant histiocytosis may mimic infections or hematologic neoplasms, and pathologically it may be mistaken for Hodgkin's disease, histiocytic lymphoma, or viral lymphadenitis. The case histories of three patients in whom malignant histiocytosis clinically and pathologically simulated granulomatous diseases are reported. Erythrophagocytosis was not present in the initial bone marrow aspirates from two of the patients. One patient was considered to hve sarcoidosis or Wegener's granulomatosis; the second patient, Weber-Christian disease, and the third patient, a gr

Histiocytic sarcoma (HS) is a malignant neoplasm with histiocytic differentiation. It presents most commonly at extranodal sites. We report a case of HS in a 15-year-old female with a history of trauma to the right little finger. Radiograph of the hand was reported as malignant tumor primarily arising from bone and invading soft tissues. Histologically, tumor cells are characterized by abundant eosinophilic cytoplasm and eccentric round to oval nuclei with atypia. One or more small and distinct nucleoli are present. The tumor cells were positive for CD68, S100, CD4 and lymphocyte common antige
