Levulan: the first approved topical photosensitizer for the treatment of actinic keratosis.

Actinic keratosis (AK) is a very common skin problem found in patients over 50 years of age, representing an in situ keratinocytic neoplasm that can progress to invasive squamous cell carcinoma of the skin. One Food and Drug Administration-approved treatment for AK of the face and scalp is photodynamic therapy (PDT) with 20% aminolevulinic acid (ALA). This advanced technology has been demonstrated in clinical trials to be effective and well tolerated by patients.

Hypercalcemia in squamous cell carcinoma of the renal pelvis? Parathyroid or paraendocrine in origin.

Hypercalcemia associated with metastatic cancer may be due to osteolytic invasion or paraendocrine effects of the neoplasm. A patient with refractory hypercalcemia of long duration underwent cervical parathyroid exploration; three glands were found, but hypercalcemia persisted. After localization studies, a fourth gland was uncovered from the mediastinum. Hypercalcemia persisted, and at operation for kidney stones, squamous cell carcinoma of the renal pelvis was discovered, which progressed to cause the patient's death in hypercalcemia.

Squamous cell carcinoma of mandible with unusual clinical presentation: A rare case report and review of literature.

Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is commonly seen malignant epithelial neoplasm of the oral cavity, which is characterized by variable clinical manifestations. It arises from dysplastic squamous epithelium. Majority of the spread of oral SCC (OSCC) to mandibular bone occurs by direct infiltration of the tumour through alveolar ridge or lingual cortical plate. Only 6% of the OSCC present with primary tumour; hence, a comprehensive whole body imaging needs to be done for ruling out primary tumour anywhere else in the body along with a proper clinical examination. Here, we present an unusual case of

Nasal polyps - histopathologic spectrum.

Analysis of 345 polypoidal masses in nose and nasal sinuses with clinical diagnosis of nasal polyp, observed in 10 years, revealed 175 (50.7%) non- neoplastic lesions and 170 (49.3%) neoplasms. Among the non- neoplastic lesions, there were 110 cases (62.8%) of true nasal polyps including 74 cases (67.3%) of allergic polyps and 36 (32.7%) inflammatory ones. The next common non- neoplastic polyp was due to rhinosporidiosis (31.4%). Benign neoplastic lesions consisted mainly of haemangioma (45.7%), angiofibroma (23.2%), fibroma (6.2%), transitional cell papilloma, inverted papilloma, adenoma-3.9%

Cervical Adenoid Basal Carcinoma With High-grade Squamous Component: True Mixed Carcinoma or Colonization of Adenoid Basal Carcinoma by High-grade Squamous Intraepithelial Lesion?

Adenoid basal carcinoma (ABC) is a rare clinically indolent human papillomavirus-associated cervical neoplasm with uniformly bland morphology which in pure form does not metastasize. Many cases co-exist with a human papillomavirus-associated high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion (HSIL) or squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). The ABC and high-grade squamous components may be clearly separate, albeit intermingled, and when the high-grade squamous component is invasive, the tumor is designated a mixed carcinoma, with clinical behavior determined by the non-ABC component. In other cases, discrete n

Vulvar Paget's disease associated with squamous cell carcinoma: A case report.

INTRODUCTION: and Importance: Extra Mammary Paget's disease (EMPD) of the vulva, a rare postmenopausal entity, is responsible for less than 1% of all vulvar neoplasms. Invasive EMPD of the vulva with underlying squamous cell carcinoma is even rare. CASE PRESENTATION: A 70-year-old para 5 postmenopausal lady presented with a history of vulvar itching and a gradually progressive reddish lesion on genitals unresolved by topical therapies for one year. Vulvar biopsy confirmed the presence of pagetoid cells with a focus of squamous invasion. DISCUSSION: The clinical presentation is often non-spec

SMARCB1 (INI-1) and NUT immunoexpression in a large series of head and neck carcinomas in a Brazilian reference center.

BACKGROUND: SMARCB1 (INI-1)-deficient carcinomas and NUT carcinomas are aggressive neoplasms, often affecting the sinonasal region. Not uncommonly, their diagnoses are made retrospectively. METHODS: Through SMARCB1 (INI-1) and NUT immunomarkers, 643 head and neck carcinomas were assessed retrospectively. Moreover, SMARCB1 (INI-1)-deficient and NUT carcinomas were additionally evaluated by immunohistochemistry, as well as in situ hybridization analysis for HPV and EBV. RESULTS: Four SMARCB1 (INI-1)-deficient carcinomas (located in lower lip, soft palate, hypopharynx and vocal cord, this latte

YAP1::MAML2-Rearranged Poroid Squamous Cell Carcinoma Arising in a Non-sebaceous Lymphadenoma of the Parotid Gland.

Salivary gland lymphadenoma is an uncommon neoplasm and malignant transformation is even rarer. Reported tumor types include basal cell adenocarcinoma, sebaceous carcinoma, EBV-associated lymphoepithelial carcinoma, and undifferentiated carcinoma; a squamous phenotype has not been reported. Here we describe the case of a 62-year-old female who underwent total parotidectomy for a painful parotid gland mass of uncertain duration. On microscopic examination, a high grade lymphoepithelial carcinoma with squamous and poroid features arising in a non-sebaceous lymphadenoma was recognized. Both benig

[Syringomatous breast carcinoma and correlated lesions].

A rare case of syringomatous carcinoma of the breast in a 64-year-old female patient is reported. The tumor, occurring in the left breast, measured 1 cm. A quadrantectomy was performed and the patient presented no further recurrence or metastasis. Histologically, the neoplasm was composed of small tubules, often dilated, sometimes with a "tadpole" appearance, lined by epithelial flattened cells, and of keratinizing squamous cysts embedded in a desmoplastic stroma. Some tumors occurring in other anatomic sites show histologic features similar to those of syringomatous carcinoma of the breast: i

Unexpected Neoplasms in Lungs Explanted From Lung Transplant Recipients: A Single-Center Experience and Review of Literature.

INTRODUCTION: Lung transplantation is a common treatment for various indications, but undiagnosed neoplasms are found in 0.5% to 2.4% of explanted lungs. We report the largest single-institution series of patients with unexpected neoplasms in explanted lungs and compare rates of undiagnosed malignancies before and after the 2005 Lung Allocation Score (LAS) update. METHODS: We reviewed the medical records of patients who underwent lung transplantation at the Cleveland Clinic from 1990 to 2014. Neoplasms induced by megavoltage radiation in the head and neck region.

Radiation-induced cancer, although fortunately a rare complication of radiotherapy, is nonetheless observed occasionally even after megavoltage radiation has been used. Over a 22-year period at the Curie Institute, four patients were found to have malignant neoplasms within the fields of megavoltage treatment given for various cancers of the head and neck region. Three of the neoplasms were sarcomas, two osteogenic and one fibrosarcoma, and the other tumor was a sarcomatoid epithelioma. The latent period ranged from 3 1/2-15 years. Although the evidence is strong that the neoplasms were causal

TRPS1 Expression Is Frequently Seen in a Subset of Cutaneous Mesenchymal Neoplasms and Tumors of Uncertain Differentiation: A Potential Diagnostic Pitfall.

Although extensively studied in cutaneous epithelial neoplasms, the TRPS1 immunoreactivity in cutaneous mesenchymal neoplasms and tumors of uncertain differentiation (CMNTUDs), such as atypical fibroxanthoma (AFX), remains largely unexplored. We assessed TRPS1 immunoreactivity in 135 CMNTUDs, comprising 46 fibrohistiocytic/fibroblastic tumors, 28 vascular tumors, 24 peripheral nerve sheath tumors (PNSTs), 21 tumors of uncertain differentiation, and 16 smooth muscle tumors. Additionally, we included selected cases of melanoma with spindled cell morphology or desmoplastic features (n = 9) and sa

Role of fine needle aspiration cytology in the management of supraclavicular lymph node metastasis: Review of our experience.

INTRODUCTION: In the 19th century Virchow described that metastasis to left supraclavicular lymph nodes (SLN) could originate in neoplasms located under the diaphragm. In the same way, right SLN metastasis are usually thought to arise from thoracic neoplasms. Our aims are to review our experience with metastatic SLN diagnosed by fine-needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) and to discuss the location of the primary in these cases. METHODS: We have reviewed all lymph node FNACs diagnosed in a single tertiary hospital between 2010 and 2017 and we have included all cases of metastatic SLN. RESULTS: W

An uncommon malignant cutaneous squamomelanocytic tumor.

The intermingling of two malignant neoplasms within the same cutaneous tumor is rare. No consensus has been reached for a clear definition and categorization. In the current study, we describe a cutaneous neoplasm; a squamomelanocytic tumor (SMT) with histological features combining those of a squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) and a malignant melanoma (MM). This is the second report of an oculocutaneous SMT, and concerns a subject with a 20-year history of solar lentigo coexisting with solar keratosis in the primary lesion. This type of tumor is quite rare, with a distinct cytological architecture

Congenital cerebellar malignant rhabdoid tumor in an infant with junctional epidermolysis bullosa.

Epidermolysis bullosa (EB), a hereditary blistering condition of the skin, is divided into simplex, hemidesmosomal, junctional, and dystrophic types. It may be complicated by the development of squamous cell carcinoma of the skin, but other neoplasms, especially those separate from involved skin, are distinctly rare. We report a male infant with junctional EB who died of Pseudomonas sepsis and was found at autopsy to have a clinically unrecognized cerebellar malignant rhabdoid tumor (MRT). This is the first reported case of an infant with EB and a coincident extracutaneous neoplasm. It is also

Neoplasms of the nasopharynx in children.

Neoplasms of the nasopharynx are rare in children, but they threaten the child's life when they do occur. The nasopharynx tends to harbor dysontogenetic neoplasms. After classification into benign and malignant groups, nasopharyngeal neoplasms in children can be further characterized according to the age of the patients in which the clinical manifestations usually appear. Dermoids and teratomas are the most frequently encountered neoplasms of the nasopharynx in infants and may produce airway obstruction and dysphagia. Among the benign tumors of the nasopharynx in children, the juvenile angiofi

Adnexal Clear Cell Carcinoma Exhibiting Comedonecrosis of the Ear: A Rare Case Treated With Mohs Micrographic Surgery.

Adnexal clear cell carcinoma exhibiting comedonecrosis (ACCCC) is a rare, cutaneous, malignant neoplasm with limited reported cases since its discovery. ACCCC is characterized by unique clinical and histological features, demanding a precise diagnosis due to its potential for aggressive behavior and early metastases, distinct from other cutaneous tumors with clear cytoplasmic cells. We present the case of an 81-year-old male with a history of multiple non-melanoma skin cancers, who presented with a 5 mm erythematous papule on his left tragus. Initial tangential shave biopsy results were invasi

Submucosal gland neoplasms of the esophagus: an update and review.

Submucosal glands (SMGs) present throughout human esophagus with clusters at either the upper third or lower third of the organ. SMGs tend to atrophy with age, and neoplasms arising in these glands are rare. In order to bring convenience to diagnosis, we summarize the histopathologic characteristics of all esophageal submucosal gland tumors (SGTs). Due to the morphological similarity, the nomenclature of salivary tumors is adopted for SGTs. However, there is great confusion about the definition and histogenesis of these tumors, especially the malignant subtypes. In the literature, esophageal m
