Adaptive Localizing Region-Based Level Set for Segmentation of Maxillary Sinus Based on Convolutional Neural Networks.

In this paper, we propose a novel method, an adaptive localizing region-based level set using convolutional neural network, for improving performance of maxillary sinus segmentation. The healthy sinus without lesion inside is easy for conventional algorithms. However, in practice, most of the cases are filled with lesions of great heterogeneity which lead to lower accuracy. Therefore, we provide a strategy to avoid active contour from being trapped into a nontarget area. First, features of lesion and maxillary sinus are studied using a convolutional neural network (CNN) with two convolutional

HIVE-Net: Centerline-aware hierarchical view-ensemble convolutional network for mitochondria segmentation in EM images.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: With the advancement of electron microscopy (EM) imaging technology, neuroscientists can investigate the function of various intracellular organelles, e.g, mitochondria, at nano-scale. Semantic segmentation of electron microscopy (EM) is an essential step to efficiently obtain reliable morphological statistics. Despite the great success achieved using deep convolutional neural networks (CNNs), they still produce coarse segmentations with lots of discontinuities and false positives for mitochondria segmentation. METHODS: In this study, we introduce a centerline-aware

Discriminative Feature Network Based on a Hierarchical Attention Mechanism for Semantic Hippocampus Segmentation.

The morphological analysis of hippocampus is vital to various neurological studies including brain disorders and brain anatomy. To assist doctors in analyzing the shape and volume of the hippocampus, an accurate and automatic hippocampus segmentation method is highly demanded in the clinical practice. Given that fully convolutional networks (FCNs) have made significant contributions in biomedical image segmentation applications, we propose a notably discriminative feature network based on a hierarchical attention mechanism in hippocampal segmentation. First, considering the problem that the hi

Identification of Gastritis Subtypes by Convolutional Neuronal Networks on Histological Images of Antrum and Corpus Biopsies.

BACKGROUND: Gastritis is a prevalent disease and commonly classified into autoimmune (A), bacterial (B), and chemical (C) type gastritis. While the former two subtypes are associated with an increased risk of developing gastric intestinal adenocarcinoma, the latter subtype is not. In this study, we evaluated the capability to classify common gastritis subtypes using convolutional neuronal networks on a small dataset of antrum and corpus biopsies. METHODS: 1230 representative 500 × 500 µm images of 135 patients with type A, type B, and type C gastritis were extracted from scanned histological

Segmenting skin ulcers and measuring the wound area using deep convolutional networks.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Bedridden patients presenting chronic skin ulcers often need to be examined at home. Healthcare professionals follow the evolution of the patients' condition by regularly taking pictures of the wounds, as different aspects of the wound can indicate the healing stages of the ulcer, including depth, location, and size. The manual measurement of the wounds' size is often inaccurate, time-consuming, and can also cause discomfort to the patient. In this work, we propose the Automatic Skin Ulcer Region Assessment ASURA framework to accurately segment the wound and automati

PumpKin: A machine-learning pipeline for automatically tracking localized kinematics in freely moving C. elegans.

One of the many goals of neuroscience is to understand how the brain encodes and transforms sensory information into behavior. These animal behaviors can be studied at the level of multi-limb poses or through the focused analysis of individual body parts. Techniques for tracking animal pose, such as DeepLabCut and SLEAP, enable detailed studies of large-scale multi-limb behaviors but show reduced accuracy when used for single-keypoint tracking, where insufficient spatial context leads to increased drift and instability in tracking (Arent I, Schmidt FP, Botsch M et al. Marker-less motion captur

Predicting social anxiety disorder based on communication logs and social network data from a massively multiplayer online game: Using a graph neural network.

AIM: Social anxiety disorder (SAD) is a mental disorder that requires early detection and treatment. However, some individuals with SAD avoid face-to-face evaluations, which leads to delayed detection. We aim to predict individuals with SAD based on their communication logs and social network data from a massively multiplayer online game (MMOG). METHOD: The study included 819 users of Pigg Party, a popular MMOG in Japan. Participants completed the Japanese version of the Liebowitz Social Anxiety Scale (LSAS-J) and a social withdrawal scale (hikikomori) questionnaire. Participants scoring ≥60

Life-Long Genetic and Functional Access to Neural Circuits Using Self-Inactivating Rabies Virus.

Neural networks are emerging as the fundamental computational unit of the brain and it is becoming progressively clearer that network dysfunction is at the core of a number of psychiatric and neurodegenerative disorders. Yet, our ability to target specific networks for functional or genetic manipulations remains limited. Monosynaptically restricted rabies virus facilitates the anatomical investigation of neural circuits. However, the inherent cytotoxicity of the rabies largely prevents its implementation in long-term functional studies and the genetic manipulation of neural networks. To overco

Dimorphic neural network architecture prioritizes sexual-related behaviors in male Caenorhabditis elegans.

Neural network architecture determines its functional output. However, the detailed mechanisms are not well characterized. In this study, we focused on the neural network architectures of male and hermaphrodite Caenorhabditis elegans and the association with sexually dimorphic behaviors. We applied graph theory and computational neuroscience methods to systematically discern the features of these two neural networks. Our findings revealed that a small percentage of sexual-specific neurons exerted dominance throughout the entire male neural network, suggesting males prioritized sexual-related b

Automated dental landmark detection and model-analysis measurements on 3D digital dental models using a projection-based two-stage cascade convolutional neural network.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Accurate localization of dental landmarks in three-dimensional (3D) digital dental models is crucial for orthodontic diagnosis and treatment planning, particularly for model analysis involving measurements such as arch length discrepancy (ALD). Such model analysis is time-consuming and often shows substantial inter-examiner variability. This study proposes a projection-based two-stage cascade convolutional neural network (CNN) for automated landmark detection. METHODS: We obtained 1427 digital dental models from 714 patients. BACKGROUND: Invasive ductal carcinoma (IDC) is considered the most common form of breast cancer, accounting for a significant percentage of mortality worldwide. Therefore, its early detection is vital to further improve patients' outcomes and survival rates. However, conventional diagnostic methods in the form of manual histopathological examinations are time-consuming, subjective, and prone to errors. Therefore, there is an urgent need to develop automated solutions for accurate IDC detection in histopathology images to assist pathologists in clinical decision-making. OBJECTIVE: We aim to de

Reconstruction from a distilled encoder with edge-based pseudo-anomaly for industrial anomaly detection.

Industrial anomaly detection is an important research topic in the field of computer vision. Although widely studied, anomaly detection methods based on supervised learning have long faced challenges due to the scarcity of anomaly samples. To overcome this limitation, recent efforts have shifted toward reconstruction-based methods, which typically operate by first generating pseudo-anomalies and then reconstructing them. However, the pseudo-anomalies generated by current methods lack the requisite similarity and localization, and the reconstruction networks struggle to balance image fidelity w

Adaptive performance control of switched nonlinear systems under false data injection attacks and input saturation constraints.

Considering the controller-actuator channel subjected to false data injection (FDI) attacks, this study proposes an adaptive performance control strategy for switched nonlinear systems under composite disturbances and input saturation. The strategy achieves disturbance rejection and a more flexible prescribed performance control. In addition, implicit disturbances that are coupled with the system states in switched nonlinear systems lie beyond the capability of existing disturbance observers. Moreover, conventional prescribed performance control methods become ineffective in the presence of in

Tongue shape classification based on IF-RCNet.

The classification of tongue shapes is essential for objective tongue diagnoses. However, the accuracy of classification is influenced by numerous factors. First, considerable differences exist between individuals with the same tongue shape. Second, the lips interfere with tongue shape classification. Additionally, small datasets make it difficult to conduct network training. To address these issues, this study builds a two-level nested tongue segmentation and tongue image classification network named IF-RCNet based on feature fusion and mixed input methods. In IF-RCNet, RCA-UNet is used to se
