Deuteration Effects on the Physical and Optoelectronic Properties of Donor-Acceptor Conjugated Polymers.

The significant differences in scattering cross sections between deuterium and protium are unique to neutron scattering techniques and have … t deuterium labeling could be a powerful method for controlling scattering length density, enabling neutrons to study the structure and dynamics of conjugated polymers without impacting their electronic performance.

Design of a diamond-based in-vessel soft x-ray camera system for the SPARC tokamak.

Soft x-ray tomography has been used in tokamaks for decades to interrogate a wide variety of phenomena; however, the standard silicon diodes coupled with beryllium filters will not be able to survive the high heat and neutron fluxes present in burning plasma devices like SPARC. Presented here is the design for a set of soft x-ray tomography cameras that use chemical vapor deposition (CVD) single-crystal diamonds and graphene filters for photodetection. Four of these cameras will be placed in the port plugs of SPARC with a large enough view of the poloidal cross section to enable tomographic in

Enhancing Superexchange through Frontier Orbital Engineering in a van der Waals Metal-Organic Magnet.

van der Waals metal-organic magnets (vdW MOMs) offer the possibility of realizing a wide range of magnetic functionalities not possible in inorganic vdW magnets. In particular, their modularity allows for specific control over ligand-mediated superexchange and hence their ground states. We report a new vdW MOM, CrCl2(btd) (btd = 2,1,3-benzothiadiazole), assembled from a high-energy early transition metal and a redox-active ligand, which leads to a small charge-transfer gap. We solve the structure using a combination of powder neutron diffraction and single-crystal electron diffraction, showing

Development of altered hepatocyte foci by separate and combined treatments with radiation and diethylnitrosamine in neonatal rats.

To establish an in vivo radiation carcinogenesis model using glutathione S-transferase placental form positive (GST-P+) hepatic foci, newborn rats were irradiated once by 0.5 Gy and 2 Gy of gamma ray or 0.15 Gy and 0.6 Gy of neutron with or without 0.05% phenobarbital (PB). When the rats were sacrificed at the 12th or 21st week, the incidence of GST-P+ foci induction by radiation alone was very low. The neutron was more sensitive than the gamma ray at week 12 and the reverse phenomenon was observed in the groups at week 21. PB combination showed an increased incidence of GST-P+ foci in gamma r

Temporal analysis of a dose-response relationship: leukemia mortality in atomic bomb survivors.

A data analysis that incorporates time dependencies is demonstrated for the dose response of leukemia mortality in the atomic bomb survivors … decreases more slowly, if at all, in time. Consequently, relative biological effectiveness (RBE) of neutrons is shown to increase in time (P = 0.002) and the current definition of RBE as a time-independent quantity is therefore challenged. It is demonstrated with time-dependent models that the L-L model has a poor fit (P = 0.01) to the data for the first 7 …

[Stable isotopes in biomedical diagnosis and research].

Atoms that are chemically identical but that differed slightly in weight due to the number of nuclear neutrons are called isotopes stables, meaning that do not degrade spontaneously. Mass spectrometry is the analytical technique to evaluate the enrichment on these isotopes with a variety of applications in the clinical diagnosis of pathological processes and the quantitation of metabolic events such as bacterial growth (Helicobacter pylorii), Phenylketonuria, lactose intolerance, liver and pancreatic function, body composition and energy expenditure, cholesterogenesis, glucose utilization, etc…

[Radiation biology of structurally different Drosophila genes. Report V. The cinnabar gene: general and molecular characteristics of its radiomutability].

The results of the genetic, cytogenetic and molecular analysis of the recessive mutations at the small, lying close to the centromere, cinnabar (cn) gene of Drosophila melanogaster induced by γ-rays of 60Co (doses 5-60 Gy) or 0.85 MeV fission neutrons (doses 2.5-20 Gy) in the mature sperm of the wild-type males from the laboratory line D32 are presented. The whole spectrum of the cn mutations induced by different quality radiation is found to be the same and consists of the two main-distinct classes such as gene/point and gene/chromosome mutations either of which includes the array of the subc…

Nuclear Recoil Calibration at Sub-keV Energies in LUX and Its Impact on Dark Matter Search Sensitivity.

Dual-phase xenon time projection chamber (TPC) detectors offer heightened sensitivities for dark matter detection across a spectrum of particle masses. To broaden their capability to low-mass dark matter interactions, we investigated the light and charge responses of liquid xenon (LXe) to sub-keV nuclear recoils. Using neutron events from a pulsed Adelphi Deuterium-Deuterium neutron generator, an in situ calibration was conducted on the LUX detector. We demonstrate direct measurements of light and charge yields down to 0.45 and 0.27 keV, respectively, both approaching single quanta production,

PTB intercomparisons of passive H*(10) area dosemeters for environmental monitoring.

For measuring the quantity ambient dose equivalent, H*(10), various passive photon and neutron dosemeters have been newly developed and are used in particular for the monitoring of nuclear facilities in the radiation field of the natural ambient radiation. Since 2005, the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB) has been performing intercomparisons to study fundamental properties and the long-term behaviour of area dosemeters under real environmental conditions, i.e. the accuracy of photon and neutron measurements performed in the complex natural radiation field. Measuring bodies from four

The hydrogen-bonding transition and isotope-dependent negative thermal expansion in H3Co(CN)6.

We investigate the structures of H(3)Co(CN)(6) and D(3)Co(CN)(6) and their temperature dependence using a combination of advanced neutron and x-ray diffraction techniques. Lattice parameter refinements show marked temperature- and isotope-dependent effects in the thermal expansion behaviour. Reverse Monte Carlo modelling of neutron total scattering data characterizes the distribution of D atom positions in the deuterated compound; analysis of these distributions reveals that the two N-H/D bonds become increasingly different with increasing temperature, suggesting a mechanism for the observed t

Features of internal absorbed dose microdistribution in biological tissue irradiated by 31SiO2 microparticles compared with dose microdistribution from exposure to 56MnO2 particles.

Radiobiological studies are ongoing to understand the consequences of internal exposure to neutron-activated radioactive microparticles, which were sprayed over experimental rats and mice. Special attention in these experiments is given to internal irradiation with radioactive microparticles with short-lived neutron-activated radionuclides 31Si (T1/2 = 2.62 h) and 56Mn (T1/2 = 2.58 h), which are among the main dose-forming factors from residual radioactivity activated in soils by neutrons in the first hours after atmospheric nuclear explosions. The presented work is devoted to microdosimetry p…

Observation by SANS and PNR of pure Néel-type domain wall profiles and skyrmion suppression below room temperature in magnetic [Pt/CoFeB/Ru]10 multilayers.

We report investigations of the magnetic textures in periodic multilayers [Pt(1 nm)/(CoFeB(0.8 nm)/Ru(1.4 nm)]10 using polarised neutron reflectometry (PNR) and small-angle neutron scattering (SANS). The multilayers are known to host skyrmions stabilized by Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions induced by broken inversion symmetry and spin-orbit coupling at the asymmetric interfaces. From depth-dependent PNR measurements, we observed well-defined structural features and obtained the layer-resolved magnetization profiles. The in-plane magnetization of the CoFeB layers calculated from fitting of th

Low-latency gravitational wave alert products and their performance at the time of the fourth LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA observing run.

Multimessenger searches for binary neutron star (BNS) and neutron star-black hole (NSBH) mergers are currently one of the most exciting areas of astronomy. The search for joint electromagnetic and neutrino counterparts to gravitational wave (GW)s has resumed with ALIGO's, AdVirgo's and KAGRA's fourth observing run (O4). To support this effort, public semiautomated data products are sent in near real-time and include localization and source properties to guide complementary observations. In preparation for O4, we have conducted a study using a simulated population of compact binaries and a mock

Structure and Magnetic Properties of the n = 3 Ruddlesden-Popper Oxyfluoride La0.5Sr3.5Fe3O7.5F2.6.

Ruddlesden-Popper (RP) compounds of the general formula (AX)(ABX3)n with their unique sequence of perovskite-like (ABX3) and rock-salt-like units (AX) promise applications in diverse fields such as catalysis and superconductivity. Fluorination of RP oxides often leads to dramatic changes in the material properties, caused by differences in the atomic and electronic structure. While current research focuses on fluorination of n = 1 type RP oxides (A2BO4), n = 3 RP oxyfluorides have remained elusive. We present the synthesis of the first iron-based n = 3 RP oxyfluoride, La0.5Sr3.5Fe3O7.5F2.6, wh

Assessment of out-of-field radiation dose in proton therapy by combining in-phantom measurements with different passive detectors.

INTRODUCTION: Proton therapy is an advanced radiotherapy technique that reduces radiation exposure to healthy tissues while maintaining tumor control. However, out-of-field radiation dose remains a concern due to their potential contribution to secondary cancer risks, particularly in pediatric patients and in the fetus of pregnant patients. Accurate assessment of out-of-field dose is challenging due to the mixed radiation field composed of neutrons, protons, electrons, photons, and alphas with a wide energy range. METHODS: This study investigates how in-phantom measurements with lithium fluor…

Assessment of secondary cancer risks within non-target organs during proton therapy for lung cancer: A Monte Carlo study.

Proton therapy is a rapidly progressing modality with a significant impact on lung cancer treatment. However, there are concerns about the subsequent effects of secondary radiation in out-of-field organs. Thus, the present study aimed to evaluate the risk of subsequent secondary cancers within non-target organs during proton therapy for lung cancer. A Monte Carlo model of the International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP) 110 male phantom was employed to calculate the absorbed dose associated with secondary photons and neutrons within out-of-field organs for different tumor locatio…

Evaluation of the compound biological effectiveness of L-4-boronophenylalanine in bone Marrow: A study combining biological experiments with Monte Carlo dose calculation.

PURPOSE: The compound biological effectiveness (CBE) is a key parameter for converting a boron dose into a bioequivalent X-ray dose. As a hematopoietic organ, the bone marrow is highly radiosensitive. However, the CBE value of L-4-boronophenylalanine (BPA) for bone marrow remains undetermined, which may lead to an underestimation of the radiation dose to bone marrow during boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT). MATERIALS AND METHODS: BNCT dose was simulated using the Particle and Heavy Ion Transport Code System Monte Carlo code. A one-compartment model was applied to calculate the concentratio

First ^{94}Nb(n,γ) Measurement: Constraining the Nucleosynthetic Origin of ^{94}Mo in Presolar Grains.

Isotopic measurements of presolar silicon carbide grains from dying stars have revealed a puzzling overabundance of ^{94}Mo that stellar nucleosynthesis models have failed to reproduce for two decades. This discrepancy challenged our understanding of the slow neutron-capture process (s-process) that forges approximately half of the elements heavier than iron. The key uncertainty lies at ^{94}Nb, a radioactive branching point where competition between neutron capture and beta decay governs the ^{94}Mo production, yet the neutron-capture cross section had never been measured. Here, we report the
